After a brief delay, Meta says<\/a> that it\u2019s begun to roll out certain AI features to users of its Ray-Ban Meta AR glasses in France, Italy, and Spain. <\/p>\n

Starting today, people in those countries can invoke Meta\u2019s AI assistant, Meta AI, using their voice to get answers to general<\/a> questions (e.g. \u201cWhat are some good gift ideas for my kids aged 6 and 8?\u201d). Meta AI now supports French, Italian, and Spanish in addition to English as part of the update, Meta says. <\/p>\n

\u201cSince we launched in September 2023, we have been diligently working to ensure that Ray-Ban Meta glasses comply with Europe\u2019s complex regulatory system,\u201d the company wrote in a blog post. \u201cWe are excited to begin bringing Meta AI and its innovative features to parts of the EU and look forward to expanding to more European countries soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The upgrade won\u2019t<\/em> include multimodal features available on Ray-Ban Meta glasses in the U.S., Canada, and Australia \u2014 namely the ability to get answers to questions about what\u2019s in view of the glasses\u2019 camera (e.g. \u201cTell me more about this landmark\u201d). Meta says it\u2019s working to bring multimodality to more countries \u201cin the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meta has previously expressed concerns about its ability to comply with\u00a0the AI Act, the EU law that establishes a legal and regulatory framework for AI \u2014 calling the law\u2019s implementation \u201ctoo unpredictable.\u201d Also at issue for the company are provisions in the GDPR, the EU\u2019s privacy law, pertaining to AI training. Meta trains AI models, including the models that power features on its Ray-Ban Meta glasses, on the public data of Instagram and Facebook<\/a> users who haven\u2019t opted out \u2014 data that in Europe is subject to GDPR guarantees. <\/p>\n

EU regulators earlier this year requested that Meta halt training on European user data while they assessed the company\u2019s GDPR compliance. Meta relented, while at the same time endorsing an\u00a0open letter<\/a>\u00a0calling for \u201ca modern interpretation\u201d of GDPR that doesn\u2019t \u201creject progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

In early fall,\u00a0Meta said that it would resume training on U.K. user data\u00a0after \u201c[incorporating] regulatory feedback\u201d into a revised opt-out process. But the company has yet to share an update on training throughout the bloc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
