margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265632\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Writing for The FADER in 2014, Adam Harper explored an exciting movement in underground music dubbed \u201cepic collage,\u201d wherein the artist formerly known as Elysia Crampton, Total Freedom, and Chino Amobi (as Diamond Hearted Black Boy) challenged prevailing stunted notions of cacophony. \u201cThe framework is avant-garde sample collage,\u201d Harper wrote, \u201cbut their work tells stories about 21st-century experience.\u201d If only we\u2019d listened. Ten years ago, epic collage releases like the 2012 compilation <i>Blasting Voice<\/i> felt like a Molotov cocktail defiantly tossed at an ember, a response to a world where silence and privacy were becoming rarer and rarer. But unlike the outside world\u2019s encroaching noise, epic collage had a soul; it was a protest, but it didn\u2019t use the master\u2019s tools.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265630\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 470px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=702674645\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chinoamobi.bandcamp.com\/album\/eroica\">EROICA by Chino Amobi<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265633\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Chino Amobi\u2019s <i>Eroica<\/i>, his new epic collage album released last month, began as an \u201cepic globalist thriller\u201d novel published in 2020. The book constructs a fictionalized version of Amobi, beginning with a police report describing his murder \u2014 death by castration. This allusion to the racialized violence that was fed on the breadbasket of the Confederacy, its former capital a two-hour drive from Amobi\u2019s childhood home in Richmond, Virginia, is the kind that permeates Amobi\u2019s music. <i>Paradiso<\/i>, his acclaimed 2017 project released via his own (now defunct) label, NON Worldwide, was billed in a press release as \u201ca musical epic set in a distorted Americana;\u201d the cover depicts an identity card for the fictional country, with Amobi photographed in a stance something between prisoner, visitor, and citizen.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            \u201cIn a lot of ways,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.passionweiss.com\/2017\/05\/17\/chino-amobi-interview\/\">Amobi said in 2017<\/a>, \u201cblack music has existed in terms of resistance to a sort of hegemonic definition of what it is and what its function is. Those are things I think about when I\u2019m working on my music. How does this resist or run counter to the conversation around what black music is?\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The resistance of <i>Eroica<\/i>\u2019s music component is aided by a number of different iterations that allow us to hear it deeper: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/westbau.com\/en\/program\/chino-amobi\">an art exhibit in Zurich<\/a> with its glamorous militarism; <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/eroica__\/\">the slickness of the <i>Eroica<\/i> clothing line\u2019s streetwear designs<\/a>; <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Nfglz4nuqVo\">a haunted short film<\/a> directed by Nathan De Paz Habib exploring Chino Amobi&#8217;s personal myth. Thanks to this surrounding lore, the <i>Eroica<\/i> album is elevated into the grandest iteration yet of his epic collage ethos.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265634\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            All of Amobi\u2019s music is personal, but in <i>Eroica<\/i> he delivers something resembling a self-portrait, or more accurately a self-dissemination. Opening track \u201cAztlan\u201d begins with Ennio Morricone guitar, \u201cNew Slaves\u201d drums, and an assortment of chanting sourced from around the world. Amobi\u2019s preoccupation with the cinematic is on full display until the music melts away and Amobi <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears as an echo over the track. His words appear entirely improvised \u2014 \u201cI am the one whom they call life, and you call death, it\u2019s gotta be strife,\u201d he says at one point, sounding like the burning bush lost its train of thought while addressing Moses \u2014 helping to tie together the music\u2019s more sketched-out elements with its painstaking composition.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Though spiritual references pop up frequently in Amobi\u2019s lyrics, they often veer into gibberish and non sequiters; <i>Eroica<\/i> encourages us to search more deeply for narrative within its sonic connections. And does Amobi ever make it easy for us: the scope of <i>Eroica<\/i>\u2019s juxtapositions is so vast, I\u2019m certain that most music lovers will find at least one moment that will be one of the most beautiful they\u2019ve heard all year. For me, that includes Amobi\u2019s keen sampling of a wailing singer on \u201cIn the city of the wicked\u2026,\u201d clipped to sound like she\u2019s singing his name, hovering over a saxophone; how \u201cPolitics Won\u2019t Save Us (Mammon)\u201d veers into demonic screw; and the ghostly voices behind the Krzysztof Penderecki-level nightmare of \u201cEroica II.\u201d \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265635\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            In late 2023, Amobi\u2019s former collaborator Chuquimamani-Condori (n\u00e9e Elysia Crampton) released <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/chuquimamani-condori.bandcamp.com\/album\/dj-e\"><i>DJ E<\/i><\/a>, an unexpected album that would be one of the year\u2019s definitive projects. There\u2019s a delightful kismet in how Amobi has followed suit in 2024 with <i>Eroica<\/i>, an album of omniscient breadth and deep heart.
