She im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely fell in love with musical theater: the costumes, the pageantry, and the songs. The following year, after her family moved out of the city to a village in Westchester, <i>The Music Man<\/i> came back into her life as a high school production, and she auditioned for a small role. \u201cI was so nervous,\u201d she tells me in her makeshift green room at Light and Sound Design, the third-floor DIY venue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn where she\u2019ll perform songs from her new album, <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/iammizu.bandcamp.com\/album\/4-2-3\">4 <\/a><\/i>| <i>2 <\/i>| <i>3<\/i>, for the first time in a few short hours. \u201cI sang \u2018God Bless America.\u2019 It was the only song I knew. I can\u2019t imagine myself singing that now.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            She started piano lessons around the same time but switched to cello at age seven, studying with a teacher whose presence and relationship with the instrument inspired her to fall in love with it. At age nine, she composed her own musical, loosely based on <i>The Producers<\/i>, which her parents had unwittingly taken her to see when she was far too young. She arranged it for piano and voice, recorded it, and performed it for her parents and their friends, acting out every role. (Mizu is an only child.)\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265659\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left embed\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/888863324?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" title=\"Mizu - Live at Pioneer Works \/\/ Performance Sizzle\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265676\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265651\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            As <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/iammizu.com\/\">MIZU<\/a>, Mizu\u2019s recent musical performance has incorporated movement and costume. \u201cThe seeds were planted and then forgotten about, and I\u2019m coming back to them now,\u201d she says. <i>4 <\/i>| <i>2 <\/i>| <i>3<\/i> was originally commissioned as the score for a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bayeandasa.com\/423\">dance piece<\/a> \u2014 a through-composed track to be played alongside the dance \u2014  but she\u2019d already begun reconnecting with movement-based art while performing her previous two albums, <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/iammizu.bandcamp.com\/album\/distant-intervals\">Distant Intervals<\/a><\/i> and <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/iammizu.bandcamp.com\/album\/forest-scenes\">Forest Scenes<\/a><\/i>.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Exploring her \u201cgirly, hyper-feminine\u201d side, she wore lacy white dresses and played her instrument in every conceivable position: sometimes holding it over her head, sometimes lying down with it, always moving where the music took her. \u201cThe cello felt like my protective blankie,\u201d she says. After watching her open for Tim Hecker at the cavernous Red Hook, Brooklyn venue Pioneer Works in November 2023, director\/choreographers <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bayeandasa.com\/about\">Baye &amp; Asa<\/a> recruited her to soundtrack their newest project, a roughly hour-long piece based on the Sphinx\u2019s famous riddle: \u201cWhat has four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs at night?\u201d (Answer: Man.)\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Mizu was conflicted; opening night was in March, a week before <i>Forest Scenes<\/i> was set to release and around the same time as a scheduled surgery. It would be her first score, her first long piece, and her first functional work commissioned by an outside party. Knowing the timing would be difficult, she accepted.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265664\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 350px; height: 470px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3405256314\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iammizu.bandcamp.com\/album\/4-2-3\">4 | 2 | 3 by MIZU<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265665\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Baye &amp; Asa already had the structure of their piece nailed down \u2014 \u201c4\u201d and \u201c3\u201d are short, bookending sections to \u201c2,\u201d which is cut into 10 subsections on the album, mostly named for the direct prompts the directors gave Mizu. Their collaborative process varied from song to song. For \u201cMob,\u201d which comes near the end of \u201c2\u201d and is the only song on the project with articulated percussion, Baye &amp; Asa had already choreographed the full dance to a click track, so Mizu built the song around it. The percussive sounds on that tack all come from her instrument. \u201cThe cello has such a percussive body \u2014 different places you can tap and with different fingers or with your fist \u2014 and with processing you can amplify what\u2019s already there,\u201d she says. \u201cI did a lot of that acoustic \u2014 a lot of bow ricocheting on strings, the hitting, the sn<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing, the sound of the bow hair \u2014 but then I very minimally stretched and warped the audio files in the software.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            On earlier, more open tracks, she had more ability to stamp her own life onto the score. \u201cI used to practice on an upright piano in my parents\u2019 kitchen,\u201d she says, \u201cSo in the child section, \u20184,\u2019 you hear this piano loop that starts off very innocent. But it gradually spoils, and you lose that innocence. There\u2019s harmonic dissonance, and then these warpy textures come in.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The warped, drifting cello takes center stage in the album\u2019s midsection, for which Baye &amp; Asa asked for \u201csomething sparse with irregular hits.\u201d Mizu rendered the resulting four tracks almost exclusively through extended technique and digital digestion, with very little melody in earshot. There are also whispered and processed vocals; \u201cI recorded the echo of the reverb, or something like that,\u201d she remembers. These delicate vocalizations become a background drone that rises to a thrum in the appropriately titled \u201cGossip Mill.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201c3,\u201d the final section of the record, meant to represent old age, comprises a single track, the longest on the project. It\u2019s called \u201cThe Riddle,\u201d a title Mizu chose herself. \u201cIt was my favorite scene to record because I was basically writing it with the dancer,\u201d she says. \u201cShe\u2019s an older woman, and so beautiful. Observing her, I realized there\u2019s so much wonder in old age. As our hour-plus interview comes to a close, I ask her where she feels she is on the life spectrum the piece portrays. \u201cIt\u2019s always shifting,\u201d she says. \u201cSometimes I feel like a little kid, and it\u2019s so refreshing. Some days I feel so weathered and hopeless. I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about mental health, how we all have to live within our minds.
