\n Labor beat: Beware the \u2018Work From Home\u2019 Model<\/strong><\/p>\n

The response to the COVID work-from-home \u201cexperiment\u201d has been \u201clargely positive\u201d \u2014 yet Hyon Chu at City Journal warns that, \u201ctaken to its natural conclusion,\u201d such policies could have a \u201cfar-reaching\u201d and \u201cultimately negative\u201d effect on US workers. The arrangement offers \u201cmore time to spend with the family, freedom to live virtually anywhere in the world and little or no commute time.\u201d But corporations may realize they don\u2019t need as many \u201cregulars\u201d and opt for less pricey \u201ccontract or as-needed workers.\u201d They may also \u201cexchange\u201d current staff for \u201ccheaper offshore versions,\u201d a trend fueled by unemployment and the \u201cweakened\u201d power of the labor force. Chu\u2019s advice: \u201cProceed with caution. Many who currently dream of working remotely from the beaches of Thailand may find themselves replaced by a Thai contractor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Weighing Team Trump\u2019s COVID Stats<\/strong><\/p>\n

The media<\/a>\u2019s pet statistics suggest \u201cthe US has not been all that great at mitigating the pandemic\u201d compared to other developed nations, Reason\u2019s Ronald Bailey observes. But \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s new coronavirus epidemic adviser Dr. Scott Atlas more or less dismissed these figures as misleading and instead pointed to excess deaths as the better way to measure a country\u2019s success in responding to the coronavirus.\u201d The United States, with 4 percent of the world\u2019s population, has a quarter of global COVID-19. But, Atlas told the BBC, \u201cEurope has done 28 percent worse than the United States in excess mortality,\u201d the proper measure. That stat relies on using the low end of US excess-death estimates, Bailey notes, but mid-range figures show \u201c665 excess deaths per million people for the covered European area, compared with 622 excess deaths per million in the US.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campaign watch: No Real Questions For Joe<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Joe Biden\u2019s press conference last week, the press should have jumped at the \u201crare opportunity\u201d to ask hard-hitting questions of \u201cthe man who would be the oldest ever to assume the nation\u2019s highest office,\u201d points out Andrew Malcolm for Impact 2020. But instead of asking about his mask mandate proposal, promise of a nearly $4 trillion tax increase or even his lack of campaign app<\/a>earances, the reporters \u201call simply assumed\u201d Biden\u2019s plans \u201cto be good with no need for checking or verification.\u201d The softball questions about statements from the president only seemed to establish one fact, \u201cthat Joe Biden is not Donald Trump.\u201d That one fact is enough for \u201cthese self-appointed guardians of America\u2019s presidential election process,\u201d but maybe not for the voters.<\/p>\n

Culture Critic: The Oscars Go Far Left<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Oscars just \u201cunveiled their latest tone-deaf attempt to curry favor with the farthest fringes of the radical left,\u201d reports The Federalist\u2019s Joshua Lawson, with \u201ccast, staff and plot quotas for race, sex, sexual behavior and disabilities to be eligible\u201d for Best Picture. \u201cWhile Hollywood needs no aid, assistance, or encouragement to produce films with anti-American, leftist and subversive agendas,\u201d these new rules \u201creward them for doing so.\u201d But \u201cjust as \u2018The Color Purple,\u2019 \u2018Glory\u2019 and \u2018The Help\u2019 wouldn\u2019t work if every role were cast with Caucasian males, so too would films such as \u2018Master and Commander\u2019 or \u20181917\u2019 be unbelievably ludicrous if they were exclusively cast with black females.\u201d No, let \u201cgenuine storytelling and deference to the original intent of a work\u2019s creator drive casting, not identity politics steeped in leftist ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: The FBI\u2019s \u2018Crazy\u2019 Steele Maneuvers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buried in a Senate report, notes Eric Felton at Real Clear Politics, is the news<\/a> that Christopher Steele\u2019s longtime main FBI handler deemed his behavior \u201ccrazy.\u201d Yet the bureau still used him \u201cto justify its surveillance of the Trump campaign,\u201d with the central office pretending he was reliable. FBI agent Michael Gaeta testified to his \u201csurprise and disbelief\u201d at Steele\u2019s anti-Trump attitude \u2014 not just \u201ccrazy source-related stuff,\u201d but \u201cone of the craziest\u201d he\u2019d experienced in decades of handling sources. His leaks to far-left mag Mother Jones led the FBI to \u201cclose\u201d Steele as a source \u2014 but after Donald Trump won, bureau head Jim Comey revived his utterly unconfirmed allegations as pretext for further investigation via \u201ca back-channel relationship with Mother Jones.\u201d<\/p>\n
