That evil does exist, and that it only responds to force; that the well-intentioned masses need an enlightened king to deliver them, and that he is enlightened enough to be that king. \u201cI deserve it all,\u201d he hisses on \u201cman at the garden,\u201d the fourth track from his new surprise album <i>GNX<\/i>. If you disagree, find yourself a bigger gun.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The most surprising thing about <i>GNX<\/i>, released without warning last Friday, is that Kendrick Lamar has AzChike on his playlist. The second most surprising is a fresh determination to recenter hip-hop on his native L.A. Lamar has long seemed content set apart from the industry\u2019s mainstream heart, commercially successful but not always culturally dominant, if you measure a r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er\u2019s impact by the quantity of their imitators (\u201cwhat I\u2019ve learned is n***as don\u2019t like the West Coast and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NPqDIwWMtxg?si=eytMcgqQjO7j3RIx\">I\u2019m fine with it, I\u2019ll push the line with it<\/a>\u201d). Helmed by Mustard, Sounwave, and Taylor Swift\u2019s go-to guy Jack Antonoff, <i>GNX<\/i> marks a sonic pivot back towards accessibility after the elaborate set pieces of 2022\u2019s <i>Mr. Morale &amp; the Big Steppers<\/i>.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            This feels self-evident from the album\u2019s opening suite, uniformly excellent despite a creeping sense of deja vu. Didn\u2019t Rihanna sound so good on <i>DAMN.<\/i>? Setting aside the unprecedented scale of the spectacle, what made Kendrick and Aubrey\u2019s springtime spat so magnetic was the dispensation of pretense \u2014 no subliminals or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le time flows, just pure lyrical venom. Attempting to depose a declining emperor, Kendrick set aside his usual gimmicks and called up Cardo and Mustard to maximize his diss tracks\u2019 replay value. Backed into a corner and forced to rap like it mattered, Drake cut two of his best tracks in years, though that wasn\u2019t near enough for a win.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Given how thoroughly that strategy worked out for Kendrick, it\u2019s natural that <i>GNX<\/i> broadly attempts to coax lightning to strike twice, interlaced with low-profile local features as Kendrick burrows into his ongoing Drakeo the Ruler <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ralfythep\/status\/1860750629926478307?s=46&amp;t=KhK5H-GityiTyhAsiyqVuA\">impression<\/a>. Lamar has long been a careful student of West Coast hip-hop history, but his invocation of the city\u2019s more contemporary sounds via <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/blaccmassxx\/status\/1860482421445263707?s=46&amp;t=KhK5H-GityiTyhAsiyqVuA\">Drakeo\u2019s flow<\/a> remains a striking artistic concession for a rapper best understood until now as a stylistic maverick. One imagines this assimilation or appropriation must be thrilling for the uninitiated, free to enjoy the Richter 8.6 of \u201chey now\u201d without wondering where the late Drakeo might be today, nearly two years on from his unsolved murder. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NNsFWXfmVoo?si=R_JhsT9domWtc3h-\">We know the truth<\/a>: imitators ensure the Ruler\u2019s legacy will live on long enough to be overshadowed. Lacking the singular focus of the spring\u2019s diss blitz and the conceptual scaffolding of his more grandiose albums, songs like \u201cpeekaboo\u201d and \u201cgnx\u201d feel more nervy than nerve-wracking, barking loudly to hide a lack of bite; when Kendrick raps \u201cOn the dead guys n***a I ain\u2019t goin,\u201d it mostly reminds me of Blueface\u2019s viral peak five years ago, namely white teens across LA routinely posting TikToks to <i>Famous Cryp<\/i>.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            These anticlimactic misfires are all the more grating for how much sharper Kendrick\u2019s songwriting has become. Though the heady subject matter of <i>Mr. Morale<\/i> inspired complaints of inaccessibility, the gravity of the topics at hand often grounded Lamar\u2019s raps in traditionally legible forms, even if the beats tilted towards the avant-garde. Where <i>GNX<\/i> leans into Kendrick\u2019s established strengths \u2014 lush histories rendered with a wistful eye for detail, swanky mid-tempo jams that delicately two-step toward romance \u2014 the assembled talent crack hits as easily as Shohei Ohtani at bat. For a lesser MC, the Tupac flip and past lives conceit of \u201creincarnated\u201d would fall apart like a tissue paper umbrella; instead, it compresses multiple lifetimes of feeling into a single digestible sequence, as if Kendrick arrived in the studio fresh off a viewing of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/53ZebMn7QgA?si=LHPYof3VH4JPo0gk\"><i>The Beast<\/i><\/a>. A few weeks after the release of \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d former Drakeo the Ruler associate Remble took shots at Ralfy the Plug and Blue Pesos of rap duo OTM in a freestyle over Mustard\u2019s titanic instrumental \u2014 OTM would respond in kind two days later with my personal vote for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/q_4EjyhXiQ0?si=jXG-SYo-C5n05bAT\">the best take on this beat<\/a> (why settle for an imitator when you can hear from the prot\u00e9g\u00e9s?).\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Not long after, Kendrick tapped Remble to perform at The Pop Out; it felt like drawing an implicit line amidst Cold War tensions, less a calculated snub than an unfortunate reflection of competing affiliations. But when underground LA rapper Dody6 posted <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DCruny5SJPo\/?igsh=bWdweHd2czIwem1h\">a flick of him and Kendrick<\/a> working on \u201chey now\u201d in the studio, there were Ralfy and Duffy and Blue Pesos in the comments, congratulations encoded into fire and trophy emojis.
