OpenAI has filed a trademark app<\/a>lication for its latest AI model, o1, as the firm moves to shield its IP.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, OpenAI submitted paperwork<\/a> to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to register the trademark \u201cOpenAI o1.\u201d Interestingly, the application reveals that OpenAI filed for a foreign trademark application in Jamaica in May, months before o1 was revealed.<\/p>\n

The USPTO hasn\u2019t granted OpenAI the trademark yet. According to the office\u2019s online database, the application is currently awaiting assignment to an examining attorney. <\/p>\n

OpenAI has said<\/a> that it intends for o1, its first \u201creasoning\u201d model, to expand into a series<\/a> of models trained to perform complex tasks. Unlike most models, reasoning models effectively fact-check themselves by spending more time considering a question or query \u2014 helping them avoid some common AI\u00a0pitfalls.<\/p>\n

OpenAI, which has filed<\/a> for around 30 trademark registrations to date, including for \u201cChatGPT,\u201d \u201cSora,\u201d \u201cGPT-4o,\u201d and \u201cDALL-E,\u201d famously failed to trademark \u201cGPT\u201d in February after the USPTO ruled that the term was too generic. GPT, which stands for \u201cGenerative Pre-trained Transformer,\u201d was in use in other contexts and by other companies when OpenAI submitted its application, the office noted.<\/p>\n

OpenAI hasn\u2019t aggressively asserted its trademarks yet \u2014 save for one. For several years, the startup has been fighting technologist Guy Ravine for the right to use \u201cOpen AI,\u201d which Ravine claims he pitched as a part of an \u201copen source\u201d AI vision around 2015, the same year OpenAI was founded.<\/p>\n

A federal circuit court upheld<\/a> a preliminary injunction in OpenAI\u2019s favor early this fall, ruling that OpenAI was likely to prevail against Ravine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
