\n\tWicked <\/em>star Marissa Bode is calling out some \u201cvery gross,\u201d \u201charmful\u201d and \u201caggressive\u201d comments she\u2019s heard about Nessarose\u2019s disability since the Jon M. Chu musical movie adaptation hit theaters on Nov. 22. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress took to TikTok on Friday to share a five-minute video (below), sharing her thoughts on the \u201cuncomfortable\u201d things that have been circulating online about the character. As a person with disabilities who has a platform, she wants to use it to bring attention to what she has read. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is absolutely OK to not like a fictional character,\u201d she said. \u201cI am going to be admitting my bias in the way that I have a lot of different feelings on Nessa than a lot of you do, and that\u2019s totally fine. I think Nessa is complex, but that\u2019s the beauty of art. Wicked<\/em> and these characters and the movie wouldn\u2019t be what it was if there weren\u2019t different opinions on the characters and who\u2019s truly wicked or not.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tShe noted that she is a \u201cdeeply\u201d unserious person, who loves jokes that are silly, goofy and harmless. So jokes about Nessa\u2019s actions or personality are fine because she\u2019s fictional. However, jokes about her disability are \u201cdeeply uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDisability is not fictional,\u201d Bode continued. \u201cAt the end of the day, me, Marissa, is the person that is still disabled and in a wheelchair. So, it is simply a low-hanging fruit that too many of you are comfortable taking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Representation is important but that\u2019s not the only thing that will save the disabled community. I need a lot of y\u2019all (non-disabled people) to do the work. To dissect and unlearn your own ableism. Listen to disabled people. Follow other disabled people outside of just me. Read up on the disability rights movement\/watch the documentary Crip Camp! I understand no one likes feeling like they\u2019re being scolded. But true progress never comes with comfort. And that\u2019s ok. #wicked<\/a> #nessa<\/a> \ud83d\udc97\ud83d\udc9a<\/p>\n

\n\tA lot of the comments, the actress explained, are coming from non-disabled strangers with a punchline revolving around not being able to walk, giving a sense of laughing at someone and not laughing with them. But the most frustrating thing for Bode, she said, is that she feels scared to talk or post about things like this. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis goes so far beyond me, Marissa, just needing to ignore comments on the internet,\u201d she stated. \u201cThese comments do not exist in a vacuum. Aggressive comments of wanting to cause harm and push Nessa out of her wheelchair, or that she deserves her disability, are two very gross and harmful comments that real disabled people, including myself, have heard before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress admitted that she\u2019s also scared because she has seen firsthand what has happ<\/a>ened to her peers who are disabled and have called out ableism but are told to \u201cjust take a joke\u201d or \u201cstop complaining.\u201d They have had to take steps back from content creation for their mental well-being, which is not OK, she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tBode encouraged people to stop dismissing each other when they don\u2019t think an experience can be true because they haven\u2019t gone through it themselves. She acknowledged that, thankfully, she\u2019s at a place in her life where she recognizes that jokes about disability \u201care made out of ignorance.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt would have affected younger me a lot more, and I\u2019m worried that a younger version of myself is somewhere on the internet and is harmed by these comments,\u201d she continued. \u201cI do know and have seen, not in this specific instance, but similar comments be made on my disabled peers and disabled creators\u2019 videos to the point where, again, it runs them off the internet. That\u2019s not good. Please be kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBode concluded, \u201cLastly, I want to say one of the major themes within Wicked<\/em> is having the ability to listen and to understand one another. And I truly hope that is something a lot of you can practice more and take with you.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSince hitting theaters, part one of the big-screen remake of the musical has broken several records, including the biggest box office opening for a Broadway musical adaptation. Wicked: Part Two<\/em> is set to be released on Nov. 21, 2025. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
