Maybe. But don&#8217;t expect advertising to appear in ChatGPT anytime soon.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\n<p>Don\u2019t expect advertising anytime soon in OpenAI products, including ChatGPT and ChatGPT search. Although it\u2019s possible OpenAI will add ads in the future to its AI search engine, nothing is imminent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What OpenAI is saying.<\/strong> According to OpenAI\u2019s Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cOur current business is experiencing rapid growth and we see significant opportunities within our existing business model. While we\u2019re open to exploring other revenue streams in the future, we have no active plans to pursue advertising.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Friar didn\u2019t entirely dismiss advertising as a potential revenue stream. OpenAI will be \u201cthoughtful about when and where\u201d to implement advertising, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9350d075-1658-4d3c-8bc9-b9b3dfc29b26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>. The report noted that OpenAI has hired former \u201cadvertising talent\u201d from Google, Meta, and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ads are momentary.<\/strong> OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is no fan of ads. He called internet ads a \u201cmomentary industry\u201d in an interview earlier this year:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI kind of hate ads just as an aesthetic choice. I think ads needed to h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en on the internet for a bunch of reasons, to get it going, but it\u2019s a momentary industry. The world is richer now. I like that people pay for ChatGPT and know that the answers they\u2019re getting are not influenced by advertisers. I\u2019m sure there\u2019s an ad unit that makes sense for LLMs, and I\u2019m sure there\u2019s a way to participate in the transaction stream in an unbiased way that is okay to do, but it\u2019s also easy to think about the dystopic visions of the future where you ask ChatGPT something and it says, \u201cOh, you should think about buying this product,\u201d or, \u201cYou should think about going here for your vacation,\u201d or whatever.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAnd I don\u2019t know, we have a very simple business model and I like it, and I know that I\u2019m not the product. I know I\u2019m paying and that\u2019s how the business model works. And when I go use Twitter or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> or Google or any other great product but ad-supported great product, I don\u2019t love that, and I think it gets worse, not better, in a world with AI.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> OpenAI and its new search product are a blip compared to Google Search. However, that blip is growing. If that momentum continues and its userbase grows, ChatGPT could pose a potential threat to Google in time. However, no \u201cGoogle killer\u201d search engine has been able to get people to break their Google Search habit yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enshittification.<\/strong> Like Altman, many people believe Google \u2013\u00a0and other platforms \u2013 have declined due to the inevitable \u201censhittification\u201d of their products. This happens when a platform shifts its focus from the user experience to maximizing profit via advertising. <\/p>\n<p>As OpenAI is transitioning into a for-profit company, it still doesn\u2019t have any significant search market share. That said, ChatGPT referral traffic is growing. <\/p>\n<p>If ChatGPT keeps growing, advertisers will no doubt want to reach those users.
