\n After being criticized for foot-dragging, the Cuomo administration announced Thursday that next week it will begin distributing the expanded $300 weekly unemployment insurance benefits to up to 2.4 million jobless New Yorkers.<\/p>\n

The White House had accused team Cuomo of dithering in app<\/a>lying for President Trump\u2019s offer of the $300 bonus to the unemployed through the $44 billion Lost Wages Program, and only did so after the Post inquired about it.<\/p>\n

But in announcing the state\u2019s participation, Labor Department Commissioner Roberta Reardon blamed Trump for any delays.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout this crisis, states\u2019 unemployment systems have been pushed to the limit and constantly-changing federal guidance \u2014 including this haphazard Presidential executive order \u2014 have only delayed our efforts to get benefits to New Yorkers in need,\u201d Reardon said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we have worked day and night to stand up this program, and millions of New Yorkers will see payments next week.\u201d<\/p>\n

About 2 million New Yorkers who already indicated they\u2019re out of work because of the coronavirus pandemic are automatically eligible for the $300 weekly benefit.<\/p>\n

Another 435,000 must apply to qualify, she said.<\/p>\n

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will fund six weeks of $300 supplemental benefits starting retroactively through early August \u2014 when the president issued the order \u2013\u201cregardless of where the states and territories are in their process to receive and distribute the FEMA funding,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

FEMA will fund the jobless benefit to every state and territory that has applied for assistance by September 10.<\/p>\n

Trump authorized the federal unemployment insurance by executive order on Aug. 8 after the $600-a-week payments provided by the CARES Act expired on July 31 and Congress deadlocked on an extension plan.<\/p>\n

Cuomo initially opposed Trump\u2019s alternative program as \u201claughable\u201d and \u201cimpossible\u201d when it was first announced because it required that states kick in an additional $100 a week for each unemployed worker \u2014 something he said his cash-strapped state couldn\u2019t afford. The White House subsequently scrapped the state from having to kick in matching funds.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
