Technically speaking, it\u2019s the fifth celebrated project in a row since he oversaw Matt Reeves\u2019 DC Elseworlds\u2019 HBO <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, <em>The Penguin<\/em>, as well as the Sundance acquisition of <em>Super\/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story<\/em>. Gunn did not intend for his new animated series to launch the rebooted DC universe, but im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely following the ratings juggernaut that was <em>Peacemaker<\/em> season one, HBO Max, now Max, asked Gunn if he had another streaming series in him. He proceeded to write all seven episodes of <em>Creature Commandos<\/em> on spec, and just as he was dotting the i\u2019s and crossing the t\u2019s, he was hired by Warner Bros. Discovery to shepherd the entire universe alongside his longtime friend and producer, Peter Safran. Thus, <em>Creature Commandos<\/em> is first up to bat since the 7-episode series was already in motion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn late 2022, after turning in his <em>Creature Commandos <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>s, Gunn knew that he needed to hire a showrunner while he and Safran conceived the rest of the DCU\u2019s first chapter. That eight- to ten-year plan is now known as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/wY8XcmrIujE?si=p0WZEpmbPVtdbedX\">\u201cGods and Monsters,\u201d<\/a> featuring a handful of films, TV series and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, including 2025\u2019s <em>Superman<\/em>, the DCU\u2019s \u201ctrue beginning.\u201d All the while, Dean Lorey, who co-created Max\u2019s beloved animated series <em>Harley Quinn<\/em> (2019), was helping Gunn bring <em>Creature Commandos<\/em> to fruition. But as swamped as Gunn was with <em>Superman<\/em> and various other tasks, Lorey is grateful that the filmmaker and studio co-chair was still able to be hands-on with <em>Creature Commandos<\/em>, versus redirecting him to other parties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cTo tell you the truth, it was one of the best experiences I\u2019ve had. I didn\u2019t have to go through anybody else. It was one-stop shopping,\u201d Lorey tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGunn adds: \u201c[Going through multiple people] can be a pain in the ass. Honestly, [working directly] was something good that I got from Marvel. There was a very clear back and forth [with Marvel], and while there was sometimes arguing in the best of ways, it always led to something different. It wasn\u2019t like people were taking sides. The politics of it was gone, and that\u2019s the way that we did <em>Creature Commandos<\/em>. It was me working together with Dean to create the best thing, and none of us had egos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Creature Commandos<\/em> takes place shortly after <em>Peacemaker<\/em> season one, as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) sidesteps the congressional ruling that she can no longer enlist human prisoners for A.R.G.U.S.\u2019s dangerous missions by now using imprisoned monsters. As a result, Waller hands a new operation and team to Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), the father of the fallen Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), who was murdered by Peacemaker\/Christopher Smith (John Cena) in Gunn\u2019s DC debut, <em>The Suicide Squad<\/em> (2021). Grillo\u2019s older Flag will also play a key role in the upcoming <em>Superman<\/em> film and second season of <em>Peacemaker<\/em>, all of which serves as an example of the kind of synergy that Gunn hopes to maintain between animation and live-action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs for the DCU\u2019s upcoming live-action launch, Gunn is currently test-screening <em>Superman<\/em> (2025), and he remains absolutely bullish about David Corenswet\u2019s Superman\/Clark Kent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cHonestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet is going to freak everyone out with how great he is,\u201d Gun insists. \u201cHe is one of the best actors I\u2019ve ever worked with, and he can do everything. The man is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGunn has also just wrapped <em>Peacemaker <\/em>season two, and he\u2019s excited about the deviation that\u2019s coming the audience\u2019s way in late 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cSeason two of <em>Peacemaker<\/em> is also going to take people by surprise,\u201d Gunn shares. \u201cWe take a very different route than the first season, and it\u2019s a really magical story that people are going to be blown away by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBelow, during a conversation with <em>THR<\/em>, Gunn and Lorey also address the question surrounding what is and isn\u2019t canon from the now-defunct DCEU, as well as a potential second season of <em>Creature Commandos<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t***<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>James, when you and Peter Safran brainstormed your master plan for the DCU, what made <em>Creature Commandos<\/em> the right entry point?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>JAMES GUNN <\/strong>Well, it really wasn\u2019t meant to be that. The main thing is that it was already written. (<em>Laughs<\/em>) HBO Max asked me to do another show after the success of <em>Peacemaker<\/em>, but I wasn\u2019t sure exactly what I wanted to do. Committing to a TV show is a big deal, so I just started playing with different ideas, and then I started writing <em>Creature<\/em> <em>Commandos<\/em> on spec. I wrote all seven episodes in a few weeks, and then right around the time that I was finishing those scripts, I got hired as the co-head of DC Studios. So we were ready to go [with <em>Creature Commandos<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Dean, I presume you did double duty between <em>Creature Commandos<\/em> and <em>Harley Quinn<\/em>, but once James turned in all the scripts, did he basically pass the baton to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>DEAN LOREY <\/strong>I supervised production and shepherded it forward, but James was still very involved in every step. We sent him the voice records cut together, the animatics, everything, so James was very much a part of the whole process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>James juggles 700 things at the same time, so I just assumed he had to delegate.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY <\/strong>I don\u2019t know how he does it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>Every time I dealt with <em>Creature Commandos<\/em>, it was like Christmas for me. Taking on a project the size of <em>Superman<\/em> is just crazy. It\u2019s hard and stressful. But the [<em>Creature Commandos<\/em>] guys were doing such amazing work, and the cast was so incredible. They just kept sending me one great thing after another, but I also really cared about it. The pieces that I care about, I really get into the nitty-gritty of them. Of course, I worked with the actors for the recording of everything, which is relatively simple. At the end of the day, there\u2019s seven episodes and they aren\u2019t long. Should we treat <em>Squad<\/em> and <em>Peacemaker<\/em> season one as prologues to the DCU?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>Yeah, they\u2019re light canon. <em>Peacemaker<\/em> is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU\u2019s Justice League] at the end. (<em>Laughs<\/em>) They don\u2019t exist <em>yet<\/em>. But the rule is: if we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that\u2019s the way we\u2019re dealing with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Dean, it\u2019s probably pretty rare to receive notes from a writer-director who\u2019s also the co-head of a studio. How would you describe that experience?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY <\/strong>(<em>Laughs<\/em>) To tell you the truth, it was one of the best experiences I\u2019ve had. Being the creator of the show, James\u2019 notes were very clear and very specific. I also knew that once we did them, I didn\u2019t have to go through anybody else. It was one-stop shopping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN<\/strong> Yeah, [going through multiple people] can be a pain in the ass. Honestly, it was something good that I got from Marvel. Normally, when you work on a movie, it\u2019s the director\u2019s voice, the studio\u2019s voice and the producers\u2019 voice. Sometimes, it\u2019s the production company, and oftentimes, all those things can really fight each other. And working with Marvel, it was me as a director and them as the producer\/studio. So there was a very clear back and forth, and while there was sometimes arguing in the best of ways, it always led to something different. It wasn\u2019t like people were taking sides. The politics of it was gone, and that\u2019s the way that we did <em>Creature Commandos<\/em>. It was me working together with Dean to create the best thing, and none of us had egos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>James, now that it\u2019s been a couple years, what\u2019s been the most eye-opening aspect so far about co-running DC Studios?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>I can\u2019t do everything, so it\u2019s about using my time as best I can. There\u2019s a lot of things I have to turn over to the guys to do, and it\u2019s about really putting my time where it needs to be. I\u2019m a micromanager. When I\u2019m doing a movie, I\u2019m looking at every single thing. So it\u2019s definitely been wearing, and honestly, I can\u2019t do what I\u2019ve been doing the past [however many\u00a0years].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Dean, people are going to try to extract information out of James today in some clever and not-so-clever ways. Did your own curiosity ever get the best of you with regard to the Commandos and their live-action prospects?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY <\/strong>Well, I wouldn\u2019t give away any state secrets, but I haven\u2019t tried to grill James for anything about these characters. I\u2019d mostly like to be surprised. I hope that James writes the next batch of stuff and that I can read it all in the same way that I did this past batch. Has that subject been broached in some capacity?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>Yeah, we\u2019ve talked about all of these characters in live-action and how we would do them, if we did them, in live-action. I don\u2019t want to give away any secrets, but we use some <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> in <em>Superman<\/em> that\u2019s completely new in regards to this kind of stuff. So we would know exactly how to do GI Robot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Is the plan to still have the principal voice actors play their characters in live-action?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>Absolutely. 100 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>And you\u2019re aiming for consistency between both mediums?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>That\u2019s right. Everything is very consistent in terms of the politics of the world and where the world is at and what\u2019s going on; who are the metahumans in power, who are the metahumans not in power; who are the power brokers, who are not the power brokers. So we see a glimpse of it here, but we see more of it in <em>Superman<\/em> and <em>Peacemaker<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Frankenstein is back in the zeitgeist in a big way thanks to <\/strong><strong><em>Poor Things<\/em><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><em>Lisa Frankenstein<\/em><\/strong><strong>, as well as your show and upcoming movies from Guillermo Del Toro and Maggie Gyllenhaal. How much of a left turn did you try to take?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>We took elements of what the DC Frankenstein has been as this mercenary. But we also took a lot of things from Mary Shelley\u2019s original <em>Frankenstein<\/em> for both the Bride and for Frankenstein, and we put them together in a way that added some other interesting elements. But I love Mary Shelley\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, and part of the real fun for me was playing with that canon in the same way that we\u2019re playing with the DC canon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY<\/strong> And David Harbour\u2019s performance adds a whole other dimension to our Frankenstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN<\/strong> Indira\u2019s [Varma] Bride, too. Was Weasel\u2019s (Sean Gunn) backstory the one that most knocked you sideways?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY<\/strong> Yeah, I found his backstory to be heartbreaking and touching and emotional in ways that you would never associate with Weasel. It was by far the most surprising backstory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>James, when you call Michael Rooker now, does he answer the phone by saying, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll do it\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN <\/strong>Yeah, he does. He really does. He does me favors when I need him, and he\u2019s amazing in his episode of <em>Creature<\/em> <em>Commandos<\/em>. Linda Cardellini, who\u2019s another one of my close friends who I\u2019ve worked with a lot, is amazing as Weasel\u2019s lawyer, Elizabeth [Bates], in episode four. So I have this group of people who never ever let me down, like Nathan Fillion. Gregg Henry, who\u2019s amazing, is in this season. So there\u2019s just a lot of really wonderful actors that I\u2019ve formed bonds with, and because I know the ins and outs of what they can do, I use them as appropriately as I can.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>Hollywood schedules are impossible to align, but were you ever able to record any of the actors together?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY<\/strong> Yeah, we were able to do that. We got several together. We had Indira and Zo\u00eb [Chao] together. They were great fun to watch, and they were fangirling over each other. It was terrific. Who were the others?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN<\/strong> Grillo and Harbour. And Grillo and Maria [Bakalova].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>LOREY<\/strong> That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<strong>GUNN<\/strong> There are these couples throughout the show, and it was important to get the energy between them so that it didn\u2019t read like your usual thing with one line, one line, one line, one line. We wanted to really have this conversationalist, back-and-forth energy, and Indira and Zo\u00eb added little things afterwards to really keep it alive and make it feel like it\u2019s real.
