This past weekend, I had to do the impossible: find something to listen to while I was both sad and flying transatlantically. I usually struggle trying to find a good plane record because everything familiar feels boring, and when you\u2019re miserable on top of that, it\u2019s too arduous a mental task to invest in listening to something completely new. But for the sake of not wanting to just raw dog multiple flights, I pressed play on the Pittsburgh-based three-piece Gina Gory\u2019s first full-length album, Died Laughing, and closed my eyes. I listened to it nonstop until I reached California.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265852\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2335930971\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ginagory.bandcamp.com\/album\/died-laughing\">Died Laughing by Gina Gory<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265867\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265846\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Gina Gory make sludgy guitar music that recalls the hooky melodies of a shoegaze-adjacent band but with the punishing repetition of someone like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/duster.bandcamp.com\/album\/duster\">Duster<\/a>. Gina Gory will call to mind the likes of city neighbors <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/feeblelittlehorse.bandcamp.com\/album\/girl-with-fish\">Feeble Little Horse<\/a> with their deadpan delivery and fuzzed-out guitars, but Died Laughing is more rooted in horrorcore and doomgazing, even though the band have <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pghindependent.com\/post\/gina-gory-pittsburgh-diy-slackergaze-music\">stated they all hate gore and horror<\/a>. Its three members, Veronika Cloutier (guitar), Connaley Martin (bass), and Dylan Henricksen (keys and drum machine), all contribute vocal duty, and they do not incorporate a live drummer for shows. Inspired by a customer with the alliterative name Lizzy Lust, Cloutier \u2014 who works at The Government Center, a combination music venue, record store, caf\u00e9, and bar in Dormont, Pennsylvania \u2014 decided to christen her new band as Gina Gory. It\u2019s not a reference to a person or band member but a representation of the band as an ethereal and dispossessed wandering spirit, perhaps the younger sister of an Emily the Strange type.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265847\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            The trio rehearse with their instruments unplugged and have been gigging regularly for almost two years, but everything on Died Laughing sounds huge: the discordant instruments, tepid machine drumming, whispering vocals, and trudging bassline. The band\u2019s biography states they\u2019re unable to write pop songs because they are too \u201chaunted by the ones they\u2019ve already buried.\u201d So a Gina Gory song is like if a pop song was deconstructed, cremated alive, and then resurrected, its strong melodies buried in currents of distorted guitars and noise and dissonance.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265853\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gina Gory - &quot;TV Star: (music video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/khnqWFTapKw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-265848\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Tracks like \u201cBunny\u201d become earworms due to their catchy repetitiveness and textured noise, layers of carefully-selected instruments droning in and out of each other. On \u201cThe Loser,\u201d which could have been a California surf-rock song in a past life, starts off as a gothic rendering of, perhaps, The Beach Boys before descending into cosmic lawlessness after the first minute. On \u201cHart of Gold,\u201d the most outright pop track of the album, Cloutier and Martin plead: \u201cDon\u2019t break my heart, it\u2019s all I\u2019ve got \/ don\u2019t pretend you\u2019re here when you\u2019re not \/ heart of gold, without you my heart grows mold.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Perhaps Gina Gory\u2019s best talents are identifying what elements make an excellent pop song before ultimately destroying it and slowly putting it back together, piece by ashen piece.
