However, for a bigger orbital launcher like Miura 5, the company needs a facility with specific capabilities. These include a large launch pad, a comprehensive mission control centre, and access to a geographically optimal location for orbital trajectories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PLD Space plans to conduct test and flight campaigns for MIURA 5 from the site. The company now employs over 250 people. It has raised <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20ac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">170mn in funding to date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company\u2019s ambitions extend beyond MIURA 5. It plans to develop <\/span>Miura Next<b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 a family of heavy-lift reusable rockets by the 2030s and the <\/span>Lince<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capsule, Europe\u2019s first private manned spacecraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Europes_space_race_is_firing_up\"><\/span><b>Europe\u2019s space race is firing up\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgan Stanley predicts the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">space<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> economy will grow from \u20ac355 billion in 2020 to over \u20ac1 trillion by 2030 \u2014 and competition for the rewards is fierce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USA remains a global leader, while China is emerging as a powerful challenger. Then there\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has historically lagged behind <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the space race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against this backdrop, companies like PLD Space are seen as crucial for ensuring Europe doesn\u2019t become too dependent on foreign powers \u2014 and companies like SpaceX \u2014 for access to space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PLD Space hopes to be the flagbearer for a new era of private European spaceflight. But it\u2019s not alone. The company faces stiff competition from other startups with similar ambitions and similar timelines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the most promising are Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) and Isar Aerospace, both from Germany. These startups are developing partially reuseable, orbital launchers with a similar carrying capacity to Miura 5 \u2014 1000-1500kg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three contenders are rushing to become the first private company to launch a European-built satellite launcher into orbit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RFA faced a setback in August when its <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/unst-shetland-scotland-raf-cornwall-b2599094.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocket blew up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during testing, pushing back its projected launch date to 2025 at the earliest. Meanwhile, Isar Aerospace <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/europeanspaceflight.com\/isar-confirms-hot-fire-testing-has-commenced-at-andoya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commenced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hot-fire tests of its Spectrum rocket in September, but with the year almost over it looks like the company\u2019s original 2024 launch date projection will slip away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whoever gets there first, one thing\u2019s for sure: Europe\u2019s private space race is heating up.
