The tech giant is facing a \u00a31bn ($1.27 billion) lawsuit over how it licenses software to customers using rival cloud platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filed in the UK\u2019s Competition <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>eal Tribunal by Scott+Scott, the lawsuit accuses Microsoft of punishing businesses for choosing competitors like Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Alibaba over its Azure platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the gist: if you\u2019re using Microsoft\u2019s Windows Server but prefer another cloud provider, you\u2019re allegedly stuck with higher costs. Maria Luisa Stasi, the lead claimant, argues this forces UK businesses into Azure\u2019s arms and stifles competition. Backed by litigation funder LCM Funding, the case claims Microsoft\u2019s pricing practices exploit its dominance in operating systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPut simply, Microsoft is punishing UK businesses and organisations for using Google, Amazon and Alibaba for cloud computing by forcing them to pay more money for Windows Server,\u201d Stasi, who is head of law and policy for digital rights advocacy group Article19, told <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/12\/03\/microsoft-overcharging-rival-cloud-firms-customers-uk-lawsuit-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy doing so, Microsoft is trying to force customers into using its cloud computing service Azure and restricting competition in the sector.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWS and Google have already <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/366611453\/CMA-AWS-and-Google-slam-Microsoft-for-claiming-its-cloud-licensing-tactics-are-not-harming-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flagged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Microsoft\u2019s licensing policies to UK regulators, spurring an ongoing investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into the public cloud sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft, for its part, insists the industry is fiercely competitive and points to Google\u2019s growing cloud muscle as proof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft has not yet responded to our request for comment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Big_tech_under_the_microscope\"><\/span><b>Big tech under the microscope<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft\u2019s legal headaches aren\u2019t just about the cloud. In June, the EU accused the tech giant of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegally linking its chat and video app Teams with its Office product, giving it an unfair advantage over rivals such as Slack. Microsoft could face a fine equal to 10% of its annual revenue for the alleged breach of the bloc\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Markets Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DMA). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulators in the UK and the EU are tightening the noose on other big tech companies too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, in September the EU\u2019s Court of Justice, in two separate cases, ruled in favour of back taxes and fines against Apple and Google totalling a whopping \u20ac15.4bn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The court found that Apple had benefitted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from \u201csubstantially and artificially lowered tax\u201d in Ireland since 1991. Google, on the other hand, was found guilty of favouring its shopping service in internet searches and thereby abusing its market dominance in Europe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this latest lawsuit, Microsoft\u2019s cloud dominance may face a reckoning.
