\n\tBarry Jenkins isn\u2019t itching to return to the CGI technology<\/a> behind his upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tSet for release Dec. 20, Mufasa: The Lion King<\/em> is a follow-up to 2019\u2019s The Lion King<\/em>, a \u201clive action\u201d remake of Disney Animation\u2019s 1994 film of the same name. Like its predecessor, Mufasa is entirely CGI, and relies on photorealistic animation to bring the safari characters to life. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I took this job, the idea was \u2018What does Barry Jenkins know about visual effects? Why the hell would he do this movie?\u2019\u201d Jenkins recalled in an interview with Vulture<\/em><\/a>. He also knew people would ask, \u201cWhy would he be making\u00a0The Lion King<\/em>?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think part of that I found very invigorating,\u201d Jenkins continued. \u201cPeople make these things, you know, with computers. So anybody should be able to do this. Anybody, right? There\u2019s nothing physically that says I am incapable of doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also acknowledged that he accepted the job as \u201cwork for hire,\u201d partially out of a desire to ensure steady work in Los Angeles for three years, where he lives with his wife, The Farewell<\/em> filmmaker Lulu Wang. \u201cI needed to slow \u2026 the fuck \u2026\u00a0down,\u201d Jenkins said, noting he and his wife were often whisked to different cities for their various jobs. <\/p>\n

\n\tJenkins added this week that he almost said no to the project. When Disney first sent him the script<\/a>, \u201cMy thought was,\u00a0Oh, I\u2019ll just give this a few days and I\u2019ll call my agent and tell them I\u2019ve read it and I\u2019m not going to do this project,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>he said. <\/p>\n

\n\tHe and Wang then went on vacation and he forgot about the whole thing. When he returned, he remembered: \u201cOK, shit, that\u2019s right! I have to call my agents tomorrow and remind them that I\u2019m not going to do this project.\u201d Then, his wife asked him: \u201cAre you afraid to read it?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAfter telling himself he would read five pages of the script, he ended up reading 50. \u201cI turn to Lulu and go, \u2018Holy shit, this is good,\u2019\u201d he recalled. <\/p>\n

\n\tBringing the script to digital life, however, proved more difficult. The CGI movie required no sets or costumes, and instead used an empty soundstage. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is not my thing,\u201d Jenkins said of the process. \u201cIt is\u00a0not my thing. I want to work the other way again, where I want to physically get everything\u00a0there<\/em>. I always believe that what is here is enough, and let me just figure out what is the chemistry to make alchemy? How can these people, this light, this environment, come together to create an image that is moving, that is beautiful, that creates a text that is deep enough, dense enough, rich enough to speak to someone?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Moonlight<\/em> filmmaker said he tried to bring some of this philosophy to Mufasa<\/em>, emphasizing long, unbroken shots that Disney sometimes noted were too \u201cslow.\u201d He even recounted one instance in which animators accidentally created a scene that made it appear as if the camera operator had lost their balance. Though the team took it out at first, Jenkins told them to put the mistake back. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDon\u2019t smooth the shit out,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want just something that has texture, something that feels organic. And sometimes that can be the hardest thing to dial in because every single blade of grass has to be created by someone. But you ultimately don\u2019t want everything to feel like it\u2019s been created by\u00a0anyone<\/em>. You want it to feel like it naturally arose.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMufasa: The Lion King<\/em> hits theaters Dec. 20. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
