\n Aaron Boone\u2019s stated wish earlier this week that James Paxton will make it back to the Yankees\u2019 starting rotation before the end of the regular season has just become less likely.<\/p>\n

The lefty hurler, who is on the injured list with a strained forearm flexor, felt \u201ca little sore\u201d after throwing Wednesday and won\u2019t throw again for \u201ca couple of days,\u201d Boone said after Thursday\u2019s game<\/a> against Baltimore was rained out and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Friday.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Boone had floated the possibility that Paxton \u2014 who hasn\u2019t pitched since Aug. 20 \u2014 would resume throwing off a mound for the first time this weekend.<\/p>\n

With less than three weeks remaining in the regular season, Boone sidestepped questions during his weekly WFAN radio spot and later with reporters when asked whether he believes Paxton will make it back in time to pitch before Sept. 27 \u2014 the date of the final scheduled game before the playoffs begin.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they were questioning that. I wasn\u2019t speculating on that,\u201d Boone said about WFAN hosts Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts. \u201c[Paxton] won\u2019t throw for a couple of days and we\u2019ll see where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he believed this is a significant setback for Paxton, Boone added: \u201cI don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s re-injured it or anything, I just think he\u2019s a little sore from the volume of throwing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

Gary Sanchez is back from his brief benching, but he no longer is presently aligned with ace Gerrit Cole.<\/p>\n

Backup backstop Kyle Higashioka was slated to catch the $324 million import for the second straight start Thursday. In their first game together last Friday \u2014 also against Baltimore \u2014 Cole allowed up five runs (but only one earned) with 10 strikeouts over six innings.<\/p>\n

\n<\/hr>\n

Cole will pitch the opener of Friday\u2019s doubleheader with Masahiro Tanaka working the nightcap.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the pairing, but I\u2019ve liked the Gary and Cole pairing, too,\u201d Boone said. \u201cWith Higgy and Cole coming off where they just faced the Orioles, we\u2019re kind of game-planned up for these guys. I just felt it was a good move to get those two back together for the second time in six days against the same opponent.\u201d<\/p>\n

First baseman Luke Voit also was slated to be out of the Yankees\u2019 lineup. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s doing all right, it\u2019s just been a long stretch of games for him, doubleheaders, and he\u2019s had some wear and tear and I\u2019ve been putting off getting him out of there,\u201d Boone said. \u201cIt was kind of long overdue to get him off his feet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boone said Gio Urshela (elbow) coming off the IL when eligible Tuesday \u201cwould be the expectation.\u201d He also said Aaron Judge (calf) and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) are \u201cgetting close\u201d to \u201cgetting some at-bats\u201d and returning \u201cpretty soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he\u2019d be comfortable starting rookie Deivi Garcia (1-1, 3.06 ERA) in a postseason game, Boone replied: \u201cI know he wouldn\u2019t flinch at the opportunity. \u2026 I\u2019m totally confident, forget the pitching part of it, that he can handle any situation you throw him in. Hard to predict where we\u2019ll be three weeks from now and just what exactly we\u2019ll look like. But he\u2019s certainly putting his name in those conversations because of his performance.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
