It will now be further validated through a clinical trial at University Hospital Southampton with the aim of achieving regulatory approval within the NHS.

It would be wirelessly interfaced to display data onto a dedicated smartphone or tablet app for the health care team to use as an early warning system.

Currently, breathing rate is measured in hospitals by nurses manually counting the number of breaths per minute—which the researchers argue can introduce delays to detecting changes and potential treatment.

While chest-band or facemask systems are available for continuously measuring respiration rate, the team says these can be invasive and uncomfortable for use over long periods of time.

“This is a groundbreaking wearable innovation meticulously developed to provide crucial support for patients and health care professionals,” said Dr. Yang Wei, an expert in electronic textiles and electronic engineering at Nottingham Trent University’s Medical Technologies Innovation Facility.

He said, “The ability to continuously measure respiration in this way gives us the potential to enable faster, more effective treatment, significantly enhancing patient outcomes and operational efficiency within the health service.”

Professor Neil White, Director of the Center for Health care of the University of Southampton, said, “This wearable technology allows the measurement of respiratory rate over long periods of time, which is not achievable using conventional manual breath counting. Trends in respiratory rate can therefore be recorded and observed, offering the potential for rapid interventions that can potentially save lives.”

Dr. Harry Akerman, a consultant anesthetist at University Hospital Southampton, added, “Respiratory rate is often the first physiological parameter to change as a patient is becoming unwell—ahead of changes to heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and oxygen levels. It is also the only one of these that is routinely measured manually and so is susceptible to human error.

“We know that earlier detection of diseases is better for patients while also being cheaper to treat, so a device that continuously and non-invasively measures respiratory rate could be a great tool in the early detection of deteriorating patients.”

More information:
Amjad Ali et al, A Novel Wearable Sensor for Measuring Respiration Continuously and in Real Time, Sensors (2024). DOI: 10.3390/s24206513

            Provided by
Nottingham Trent University

               <use href="https://medx.b-cdn.net/tmpl/v6/img/svg/sprite.svg#icon_open" x="0" y="0"/>

                                                 Citation:
Wearable patch can monitor breathing to help save lives (2024, December 12)
retrieved 12 December 2024
from https://medicalxpress.com/news/2024-12-wearable-patch.html

                                            This document is subject to copyright.
