target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/\">dublab<\/a>\u2019s Los Angeles headquarters once held the ability to cut off the power for half of L.A. If the current was still live, the station\u2019s executive director Ale Cohen says, he\u2019d be able to shut down the second-largest city in the United States during rush hour. Though he\u2019d never make good on the threat now, as the lever controls the operations of the radio station. Hitting the switch would disturb the current broadcast, Cohen says with a lighthearted laugh. Plus, he\u2019d get in trouble with the nonprofit\u2019s actual owners: the collective of devoted listeners who, quite literally, keep the lights on.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-266039\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-266024\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Over two decades before concepts like community engagement and cultural diversity even entered mainstream discourse, USC grads and KXSC DJs, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/djs\/frosty\">Mark \u201cFrosty\u201d McNeill<\/a> and Jon Buck, sought to carve out space for a community of listeners, DJs, and artists existing on what the former refers to as \u201cthe left end of the dial.\u201d By the time they founded dublab in 1999, radio had been taken over by an oligarchy that used <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0196859999023004006\">The 1996 Telecommunications Act<\/a> to wipe out the small community stations that helped connect activist groups, independent artists, and L.A.\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/this-1996-law-was-meant-to-save-radio-instead-it-decimated-popular-black-music\/\">communities of color<\/a> spread out across the city\u2019s infamous sprawl. A strong believer in the power of collective action, McNeill quit his job a month after graduation to create dublab, a \u201ccommunity micro-power broadcasting\u201d station.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Equipped with a clunky computer and enough ethernet cable to reach a bar down the street, the team received help from San Francisco-based broadcasters <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/betalounge.com\/\">beta lounge<\/a> to join several pirate radio outlets circumventing government censorship with a connective technological innovation meant to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/20866148\">democratize the world<\/a> (a.k.a. the internet). Drawn to the intimacy of pirate radio and that feeling of having a one-on-one connection with the DJ, Tamai remembers the broadcasts giving him \u201ca sense of the growing free and timeless music culture that included all genres.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Per Cohen, the station was \u201cnever hard and fast about genres\u201d from the get-go, explaining how you could tune into dublab to hear Brainfeeder\u2019s first broadcast or cumbia picks from the station\u2019s first engineer, who also h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened to be a custodian at USC. McNeill recalls weekly selects from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thejurassic5\/\">Jurassic 5<\/a>\u2019s DJ Nu-Mark; Carlos Ni\u00f1o spinning \u201camazing funk and soul while his wife <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/archive\/carlos-nino-breastfed-02-07-00\">breastfed [their newborn son]<\/a>\u201d next to the decks; and surprise sets from out-of-town legends like Wu-Tang Clan, Kool Keith, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/djgrooverider\/?hl=en\">Grooverider<\/a>. And if you stuck around, you could catch Dntel and The Postal Service\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jimmytamborello\/\">Jimmy Tamborello<\/a>\u2019s show, \u201cDying Sounds,\u201d where he plays the kind of music he thinks \u201cyou\u2019d want to hear while you&#8217;re dying.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s like getting in a car crash while your stereo is playing something you want to bring you to heaven,\u201d McNeill says of just how adventurous dublab\u2019s programming can still get.\n into the L.A. musical \u201cinstitution on par with the Walt Disney Concert Hall or the Hollywood Bowl,\u201d says hip-hop writer and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/shows\/pow-radio\">POW Radio<\/a>\u201d host, Jeff Weiss. The industry has helped put their stamp on that vision with modular synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani designing its logo; Flying Lotus, Julia Holter, and two Red Hot Chili Peppers hosting sets with the support of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/team\">major donors<\/a> like famed pop artist Ed Ruscha and Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus cartoonist Art Spiegelman; and, most recently, L.A.X. commissioning the station to create <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lawa.org\/art-program\/on-view-by-terminal\/tom-bradley-international-terminal\/the-orchestrina\">immersive, audiovisual installations<\/a> for its sprawling Tom Bradley International Terminal. Over time, the long-standing community radio institution serving Southern California has been able to cement its reputation as a well-rounded representative of L.A.\u2019s cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Lately, dublab\u2019s been focused on expanding their reach into the city\u2019s underground rave and club scene, an effort that Cohen and McNeill says is due to dublab <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> manager Rachel Day.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            \u201cShe really thinks about how we can include even more diverse voices on the airwaves and give space [to every part in L.A.],\u201d McNeill says. According to Day, a dublab DJ is someone who \u201cclearly has a perspective to share\u201d and wants to use the opportunity to \u201cgive a window into their own respective communities.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-266030\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201c[dublab is] an institution on par with the Walt Disney Concert Hall or the Hollywood Bowl.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-266027\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            \u201cThe coolest iteration we&#8217;ve been really seeing more of is that dublab itself has become a hub for all these different people, and then each person brings their own hub and it networks out from there,\u201d Day says. Her role is trying to \u201chave a cross-section of people, genres, and perspectives\u201d that really represent the city.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            The fact that dublab functions more like \u201ca community center, musical clubhouse, and arts organization\u201d that focuses on the tastes of \u201cthe larger community\u201d is unusual, says music journalist Vivian Host, an L.A. native and founder of dublab\u2019s recurring show \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/shows\/chaos-clan\">Chaos Clan<\/a>.\u201d  Despite serving as the blueprint for other indie online radio outlets like NTS, Boiler Room, and the now-defunct Red Light Radio, dublab isn\u2019t \u201cfocused on DJs doing mixes on air,\u201d but its diverse programming that pushes the boundaries of whatever murky classifications a show\u2019s been given, Host adds.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            One example is \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dublab.com\/archive?artist=vssl\">VSSL Radio<\/a>,\u201d named after a warehouse party run by Restless Nites founder Remy Marc. For the past 11 years, Marc\u2019s show \u2014 which he now co-hosts with VSSL resident DJ Blackdog (a.k.a. Josh Beck) \u2014 has leaned more toward \u201cheavier\u201d genres like industrial, dark techno, and acid. Like he\u2019s played Prince on the show, just diving into some fun stuff,\u201d Marc says. \u201cWhereas, I mostly keep it electronic or play some post punk-stuff, though I don&#8217;t really go further back than the \u201880s. Strange sounds that kind of lend into the atmosphere of dark techno. But, again, it\u2019s not techno.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Rather than restrict themselves to labels and overgeneralization, Day seemingly speaks for the entire dublab community when she talks about the importance of \u201ckeeping that original grassroots spirit\u201d of being as democratic as possible.
