A speaker at the annual NeurIPS AI conference has drawn criticism \u2014 not for her opinions about AI, but the way she referred to a Chinese student.<\/p>\n

During her keynote presentation<\/a> on \u201cHow to optimize what matters most,\u201d MIT Media<\/a> Lab Professor Rosalind Picard (pictured above) included a slide quoting an excuse given by a \u201cChinese student who is now expelled from top university\u201d for using AI, with the student supposedly saying, \u201cNobody at my school taught us morals or values.\u201d<\/p>\n

The slide also includes a note from Picard saying, \u201cMost Chinese who I know are honest and morally upright.\u201d<\/p>\n

Google DeepMind scientist Jiao Sun shared a photo<\/a> of the slide on X, writing, \u201cMitigating racial bias from LLMs is a lot easier than removing it from humans!\u201d Yuandong Tian, a research scientist at Meta, reposted Sun\u2019s comment and added<\/a>, \u201cThis is explicit racial bias. How could this happ<\/a>en in NeurIPS?\u201d<\/p>\n

In Q&A footage that was also shared on X<\/a>, an attendee noted that this was the only time anyone\u2019s nationality was referenced in Picard\u2019s presentation, suggested that it was \u201ca bit offensive,\u201d and urged her to remove the reference if she gave the presentation again \u2014 a suggestion that Picard seemed to agree with.<\/p>\n

Following the talk, NeurIPS organizers posted an apology<\/a>, writing, \u201cWe want to address the comment made during the invited talk this afternoon, as it is something that NeurIPS does not condone and it doesn\u2019t align with our code of conduct. We are addressing this issue with the speaker directly. NeurIPS is dedicated to being a diverse and inclusive place where everyone is treated equally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Picard also apologized in a statement<\/a> in which she expressed \u201cregret\u201d for mentioning the student\u2019s nationality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see that this was unnecessary, irrelevant to the point I was making, and caused unintended negative associations,\u201d Picard wrote. \u201cI apologize for doing this and feel very badly about the distress that this incident has caused. I am learning from this experience, and I welcome ideas for how to try to make amends to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
