Strong SEO foundations are key to succeeding in AI Overviews<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This year, we experienced another massive shift in Google Search with AI Overviews, which is changing the way people engage with the search results \u2013 again.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a simplified version of how AI Overviews work (if you\u2019re into the more complex version, see Google\u2019s documentation on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US11769017B1\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generative summaries for search results<\/a>):\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Receiving the query: <\/strong>The search engine user submits a search query, and the system captures it.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retrieving relevant content:<\/strong> The system searches its index to find documents and webpages that are relevant to the query.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generating a summary:<\/strong> A large language model (LLM) processes the retrieved content to create a summary that addresses the user\u2019s query.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Selecting supporting links:<\/strong> The system identifies sources from the retrieved content that support the information in the summary, providing users with access to more detailed information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Presenting the summary:<\/strong> The generated summary and supporting links are displayed to the user.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a win for SEO, data suggests there is a strong correlation between ranking in the SERPs and the links featured in AI Overviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/richsanger.com\/google-ai-overview-study-link-selection-based-on-related-queries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A study<\/a> done by Rich Sanger and Authoritas found that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>About 46% of the documents linked in the AI Overviews summaries were from the top organic search results for the exact match query.<\/li>\n<li>A link in the first position of the SERPs had a 53% chance of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing in AI Overviews. The probability decreased to about 36% for position 10.<\/li>\n<li>When combining direct match queries with reformulated queries, there was an approximate 61% overlap between the links in AI Overviews and the top search results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, do sites that rank outside the SERPs\u2019 Page 1 get included in AI Overviews? Yes. <\/p>\n<p>Is it common? No.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is why everyone needs to know that SEO is not dead \u2013 again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for how AI Overviews work exactly, we will never know 100%, and that\u2019s nothing new in SEO. So, I\u2019ve always said that we need to beat the competition, not the algorithm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, we need to double down on the SEO strategies we know work right now to make our sites the most relevant pick for any number of queries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We need to analyze the competition and do better.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There will be research that suggests what we can test. For example, the Sanger\/Authoritas study concluded that people could:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focus on direct match queries where content can rank on the first page.<\/li>\n<li>Target related and reformulated queries to access less competitive opportunities for inclusion in AI Overviews.<\/li>\n<li>Use Google\u2019s <em>People also search for<\/em> feature to discover relevant queries.<\/li>\n<li>Create and optimize <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> content with clear, descriptive titles and detailed descriptions to align with AI Overviews\u2019 preferences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My advice? Go back to the basics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strengthen your brand\u2019s online reputation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your technical SEO is sound.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Focus on creating a fast, easy-to-use site.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Create good content that helps people on their search journey.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget the basics of on-page optimization, including schema.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There will always be some major event in SEO that throws us for a loop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stay grounded in proven strategies while keeping an eye on the future. <\/p>\n<p>Test, learn, adapt, and grow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-use-ai-as-a-strategic-tool-not-a-complete-solution\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Use_AI_as_a_strategic_tool_not_a_complete_solution\"><\/span>2. Use AI as a strategic tool, not a complete solution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>AI is disrupting the workforce in a way that has not been seen since the Industrial Revolution. While there will be job losses, AI will also create more opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>While 85 million jobs may be displaced by automation in 2025, 97 million new roles are projected to emerge, per the World Economic Forum\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prediction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AI can automate repetitive tasks, analyze vast datasets, and streamline operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, it cannot replicate human workers\u2019 creativity, strategic thinking, and emotional intelligence \u2013 all of which are key to effective SEO.<\/p>\n<p>As we think about how to adopt AI tools and systems into our SEO programs, we need to consider how it will impact the <strong>quality<\/strong> of our strategies.<\/p>\n<p>If AI can streamline processes while retaining the quality of our work, it\u2019s a win.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s no scenario I can see where AI should replace any one function of SEO without human oversight.<\/p>\n<p>So, as we head into 2025, there are two major shifts that companies will face:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adopting AI tools:<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/quantumblack\/our-insights\/the-state-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">72% of companies<\/a> have already adopted AI, according to McKinsey. There\u2019s no shortage of platforms offering AI solutions in the SEO industry.
