ChatGPT search has led to many questions about the quality of the overall results compared to Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a difficult question to answer, and in today\u2019s article, I will provide some insights into how to do just that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Note that our understanding is that the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> that makes it possible for OpenAI to offer a search capability is called SearchGPT, but the actual product name is ChatGPT search.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we will use the name ChatGPT search.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-in-this-report\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_in_this_report\"><\/span>What\u2019s in this report<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This report presents an analysis of 62 queries to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each response was meticulously fact-checked and evaluated for alignment with potential user intents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The process, requiring about an hour per query, highlighted that \u201cseemingly good\u201d and \u201cactually good\u201d answers often differ.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, when Google provided an AI Overview, it was scored against ChatGPT search.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A combined score for the AI Overviews and the rest of Google\u2019s SERP was also included.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of the queries tested \u2013 two-thirds of which were informational \u2013 Google returned an AI Overview in 25 instances (40% of the time).<\/p>\n<p>The queries analyzed fell into multiple categories:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure response like, \u201cjust give me the website,\u201d and are a category where Google excels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, I included queries likely to favor one platform, such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content gap analysis queries (4)<\/strong>: Representing a broader class of content-related queries, which Google doesn\u2019t handle but ChatGPT search attempts (though not always successfully).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Locally oriented queries (4)<\/strong>: These leverage Google\u2019s extensive local business database, Google Maps, and Waze, areas where ChatGPT search struggles to compete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-metrics-used-in-this-study\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Metrics_used_in_this_study\"><\/span>Metrics used in this study<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I designed 62 queries to reflect diverse query intents, aiming to highlight each platform\u2019s strengths and weaknesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each response was scored across specific metrics to evaluate performance effectively.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Errors<\/strong>: Did the response include incorrect information?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Omissions<\/strong>: Was important information not in the response?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weaknesses<\/strong>: Were other aspects of the response considered weak but not scored as an error or omission?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fully addresses<\/strong>: Was the user\u2019s query intent substantially addressed?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow-up resources<\/strong>: Did the response provide suitable resources for follow-up research?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quality<\/strong>: An assessment by me of the overall quality of the response. This was done by weighing the other factors contained in this list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end of this article are the total scores for each platform across the 62 queries.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-competitive-observations\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Competitive_observations\"><\/span>Competitive observations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When considering how different search platforms provide value, it\u2019s important to understand the many aspects of the search experience.\u00a0Here are some of those areas:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-advertising\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advertising\"><\/span>Advertising<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Multiple reviewers note that ChatGPT search is ad-free and tout how much better this makes it than Google. That is certainly the case now, but it won\u2019t stay that way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2024\/11\/10\/microsoft-13-billion-openai-best-money-ever-spent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$13 billion committed to OpenAI so far<\/a>, and they want to make that money back (and then some).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In short, don\u2019t expect ChatGPT search to remain ad-free. That will change significantly at some point.<\/p>\n<p>An important note is that advertising works best on commercial queries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As you will see later in this article, I scored Google\u2019s performance on commercial queries significantly higher than ChatGPT search.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-user-intent\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Understanding_user_intent\"><\/span>Understanding user intent<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Google has been working on understanding user intent across nearly infinite scenarios since 2004 or earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve been collecting data based on all the user interactions within search and leveraging what they have seen with the Chrome browser since its launch in 2008.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This data has most likely been used to help train Google algorithms to understand user intent and brand authority on a per query basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For reference, as of November 2024, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/browser-market-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statcounter pegs<\/a> Chrome\u2019s market share at 67.5%, Safari at 18.2%, and Edge at 4.8%\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a critical advantage for Google because understanding the user intent of a query is what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t possibly answer the user\u2019s need without understanding their need. As I\u2019ll illustrate in the next section, this is complex!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-query-sessions-work\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_query_sessions_work\"><\/span>How query sessions work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Part of the problem with understanding user intent is that the user may not have fully worked out what they\u2019re looking for until they start the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following example of a query sequence that was given to me via Microsoft many years ago:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1096\" height=\"912\" alt=\"Inside a real query session\" class=\"wp-image-449681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session.png.webp 1096w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-406x338.png.webp 406w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-721x600.png.webp 721w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-136x113.png.webp 136w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-768x639.png.webp 768w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(max-width: 1096px) 100vw, 1096px\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session.png.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1096\" height=\"912\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session.png.webp\" alt=\"Inside a real query session\" class=\"wp-image-449681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session.png.webp 1096w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-406x338.png.webp 406w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-721x600.png.webp 721w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-136x113.png.webp 136w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Inside-a-real-query-session-768x639.png.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1096px) 100vw, 1096px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The initial query seems quite simple: \u201cMerrell Shoes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can imagine that the user entering that query often has a specific Merrell shoe in mind, or at least a shoe type, that they want to buy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, we see this user\u2019s path has many twists and turns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, the second site they visit is www.merrell.com, a website you might suspect has authoritative information about Merrell shoes.<\/p>\n<p>However, this site doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to satisfy the user\u2019s needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The user ends up trying four more different queries and visiting six different websites before they finally execute a transaction on www.zappos.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This degree of uncertainty in search query journeys is quite common.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the reasons why users have this lack of clarity include is that they:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t fully understand the need that they\u2019re feeling.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t know how to ask the right questions to address their need.<\/li>\n<li>Need more information on a topic before deciding what they need.<\/li>\n<li>Are in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> exploration mode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Addressing this is an essential aspect of providing a great search experience. Each query has many unique aspects that affect how it can be interpreted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next, we\u2019ll examine several examples to illustrate this. Then, we\u2019ll compare how ChatGPT search and Google performed on these queries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-query-type-directions\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Query_type_Directions\"><\/span>Query type: Directions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This query type is a natural strength for Google (as is any locally oriented query). Note that a large percentage of search queries have local intent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One estimate pegged this at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-46-of-searches-have-local-intent-26529.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">46% of all queries<\/a>. This was reportedly shared by a Googler during a Secrets of Local Search conference at GoogleHQ in 2018. <\/p>\n<p>Here is ChatGPT\u2019s response to one example query that I tested:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1155\" height=\"865\" alt=\"ChatGPT search - where is the closest pizza shop\" class=\"wp-image-449686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Google-search-where-is-the-closest-pizza-shop.png.webp 1319w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Google-search-where-is-the-closest-pizza-shop-588x338.png.webp 588w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Google-search-where-is-the-closest-pizza-shop-800x460.png.webp 800w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Google-search-where-is-the-closest-pizza-shop-197x113.png.webp 197w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/12\/Google-search-where-is-the-closest-pizza-shop-768x441.png.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1319px) 100vw, 1319px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>I also gave Google a second version of the query \u201cPizza shops in Marlborough,\u201d and it returned 11 locations \u2013 9 more than I saw from the ChatGPT search.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This shows us that Google also has far more access to local business data than ChatGPT search.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For this query class (including the Directions discussed previously), I assigned these scores:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ChatGPT search<\/strong>: 2.00.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google<\/strong>: 6.25.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-query-type-content-gap-analysis\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Query_type_Content_gap_analysis\"><\/span>Query type: Content gap analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A content gap analysis is one of the most exciting SEO tasks that you can potentially do with generative AI tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The concept is simple: provide the tool of your choice a URL from a page on your site that you\u2019d like to improve and ask it to identify weaknesses in the content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As with most things involving generative AI tools, it\u2019s best to use this type of query as part of a brainstorming process that your subject matter expert writer can use as input to a larger process they go through to update your content.<\/p>\n<p>There are many other different types of content analysis queries that you can do with generative AI that you can\u2019t do with Google (even with AI Overviews) at this point.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For this study, I did four content gap analysis queries to evaluate how well ChatGPT search did with its responses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google presented search results related to the page I targeted in the query but did not generate an AI Overview in any of the four cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, ChatGPT search\u2019s responses had significant errors for three of the four queries I tested.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the beginning of ChatGPT search\u2019s response to the one example query where the scope of errors was small:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1204\" height=\"830\" alt=\"ChatGPT search - Some of these are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Britannica article does discuss the depth of Larry Bird\u2019s impact on Indiana State University.<\/li>\n<li>The Britannica article does mention the importance of the Larry Bird \/ Magic Johnson rivalry to the NBA<\/li>\n<li>The ChatGPT search response is longer than shown here and there are other errors beyond what I mention here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Overall, I tried four different content gap analysis queries and ChatGPT search made significant errors in three of them. For this query, I assigned these scores:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ChatGPT search<\/strong>: 3.25.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google<\/strong>: 1.00.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-query-type-individual-bio\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Query_type_Individual_bio\"><\/span>Query type: Individual bio<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How these queries perform is impacted by how well-known the person is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the person is very famous, such as Lionel Messi, there will be large volumes of material written about them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the amount of material written about the person is relatively limited, there is a higher probability that the published online information hasn\u2019t been kept up to date or fact-checked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We see that in the responses to the query from both ChatGPT search and Google.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is what we see from ChatGPT search:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1097\" height=\"911\" alt=\"ChatGPT search - They lead with quite a few images of me (which are all accurate), and below that, they show my LinkedIn profile and a summary of me drawn from Google Books.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here, it says that I write for Search Engine Watch (haven\u2019t done that for more than a decade!) and SEOMoz (which rebranded to SEOmoz to Moz in 2013) (also more than a decade!).<\/p>\n<p>These responses are both examples of what I call \u201cGarbage-In-Garbage-Out\u201d queries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the web sources aren\u2019t accurate, the tools don\u2019t have the correct information to render.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For bio queries (3 of them), I scored the competitors as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ChatGPT search<\/strong>: 6.00.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google<\/strong>: 5.00.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-query-type-debatable-user-intent\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Query_type_Debatable_user_intent\"><\/span>Query type: Debatable user intent<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Arguably, nearly every search query has debatable user intent, but some cases are more extreme than others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for example, queries like these:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diabetes.<\/li>\n<li>Washington Commanders.<\/li>\n<li>Physics.<\/li>\n<li>Ford Mustang.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these examples represents an extremely broad query that could have many different intents behind it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the case of diabetes:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does the person just discover that they have (or a loved one has) diabetes, and they want a wide range of general information on the topic?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Are they focused on treatment options? Long-term outlook? Medications? All of the above?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Or, for a term like physics:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do they want a broad definition of what it\u2019s about?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Or is there some specific aspect of physics that they wish to learn much more about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Creating the best possible user experience for queries like these is tricky because your response should provide opportunities for each of the most common possible user intents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, here is how ChatGPT responded to the query \u201cphysics\u201d:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1216\" height=\"822\" alt=\"ChatGPT search -
