Fewer students are enrolling in nursing programs, and nearly half of newly registered nurses <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/news-and-events\/news\/uk-huge-increase-in-nursing-staff-quitting-early-poses-risk-to-nhs-reforms-111124\" target=\"_blank\">leave within five to 10 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the demand for health care continues to grow, as outlined in England&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/long-read\/nhs-long-term-workforce-plan-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">NHS Long-Term Workforce Plan<\/a>, which sets out how the NHS will ensure there are enough nurses and doctors to support patients.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is not confined to the UK: nursing faces a global crisis. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/business.leeds.ac.uk\/dir-record\/research-blog\/2326\/nurse-turnover-in-older-adult-social-care-how-to-enhance-nurse-retention\" target=\"_blank\">The high turnover<\/a> of skilled professionals has serious implications for health care systems worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands is also experiencing troubling trends, with predictions of a significant health care staffing shortfall in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nos.nl\/artikel\/2487513-steeds-meer-uitstroom-in-de-zorg-toch-toename-personeel\" target=\"_blank\">coming decades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mb-4\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/VideoObject\">\n    <meta itemprop=\"name\" content=\"Nurses need care, too\u2014how curbing self-sacrifice can prevent burnouts\"\/><br \/>\n    <meta itemprop=\"url\" content=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch\/?v=AxNHfDckATE\"\/><br \/>\n    <meta itemprop=\"description\" content=\"Credit: The Conversation\"\/><br \/>\n    <meta itemprop=\"uploadDate\" content=\"2024-12-23T05:37:44-05:00\"\/><br \/>\n        <meta itemprop=\"embedUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AxNHfDckATE\"\/><br \/>\n    <meta itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/AxNHfDckATE\/maxresdefault.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n             <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Record number of nurses quitting the NHS in England \u2013 BBC News\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AxNHfDckATE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n         <\/p><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up mt-4\" itemprop=\"caption\">Credit: The Conversation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Burnout is one of the most pressing <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/nov\/11\/nurses-quitting-profession-early-health-reforms-england-at-risk-royal-college-nursing?CMP=share_btn_url\" target=\"_blank\">reasons behind this exodus<\/a> of nurses from the profession.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Culture_of_self-sacrifice\"><\/span>Culture of self-sacrifice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I interviewed nurses in the Netherlands about their workplace experiences including burnout <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0277953624010049?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\">for my research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And I found that one of the main reasons nurses leave is because of the profession&#8217;s culture of self-sacrifice. While empathy, compassion, and dedication are hallmarks of nursing, these qualities can lead to them working too hard. Nurses often push themselves so hard to meet their patients&#8217; needs that they <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jan.16506\" target=\"_blank\">neglect their own health<\/a>. Nursing often reinforces the culture of self-sacrifice, with an unspoken expectation that nurses should <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0844562120908747?journalCode=cjnb#:~:text=All%20participants%20reported%20self-sacrifice,et%20al.%2C%202017\" target=\"_blank\">prioritize patients&#8217; needs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0277953624010049\" target=\"_blank\">My research<\/a> shows that nurses are actively seeking employment to avoid burnout, but this often involves changing employers\u2014a decision that is personally and organizationally <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/23409444241252665\" target=\"_blank\">intense and costly<\/a>. I argue that, to ensure they remain in the workforce long term, nurses should be trained in setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care.<\/p>\n<p>Nurses, particularly in long-term care, frequently form strong emotional bonds with their patients, which makes it challenging to draw boundaries between professional responsibilities and personal attachment. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jan.16506\" target=\"_blank\">Interviews with nurses<\/a> highlight the emotional toll of this. Several nurses mentioned feeling guilt when calling in sick, knowing their patients and colleagues depend on them. Some described how increased workloads, due to colleagues&#8217; absences, eventually left them too overworked to continue. For many, the instinct to help others is both a source of pride and a path to burnout. When nurses don&#8217;t set boundaries, their bodies often force them to stop\u2014through illness and exhaustion.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_change\"><\/span>How to change<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although nurses are the backbone of health care systems, the profession is undervalued and often viewed as less professional compared to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jan.16506\" target=\"_blank\">other medical roles<\/a>. This perception disrespects the complexity of nursing and discourages young people from entering the field.<\/p>\n<p>To address these issues, nurses need more support from employers and colleagues, including doctors and HR teams. Public campaigns must celebrate nursing as a highly skilled and indispensable profession, challenging outdated stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>Burnout prevention also requires systemic changes. Nursing education must teach self-care and boundary setting as essential skills. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/23409444241252665\" target=\"_blank\">Research<\/a> indicates that nurses often report improved mental health and job satisfaction after switching employers, suggesting that organizational culture is pivotal in retaining staff\u2014and that some workplaces are already leading the way.<\/p>\n<p>Self-sacrifice culture is a double-edged sword. While it reflects the compassion and dedication that define nursing, it poses a serious threat to the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/gwao.12852\" target=\"_blank\">sustainability of the profession<\/a>. To retain nurses, they need to be viewed as true professionals and be acknowledged for the value they deliver to the overall care processes.
