OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that the company is currently losing money on its $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan because people are using it more than expected<\/p>\n

\u201cI personally chose the price,\u201d Altman wrote<\/a> in a series<\/a> of posts on X, \u201cand thought we would make some money.\u201d<\/p>\n

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Pro toward the end of last year. In addition to granting access to an upgraded version of OpenAI\u2019s\u00a0o1\u00a0\u201creasoning\u201d AI model, o1 pro mode, ChatGPT Pro lifts rate limits on several of the company\u2019s other tools, including its Sora video generator. <\/p>\n

OpenAI\u00a0isn\u2019t profitable, despite having raised around<\/a> $20 billion since its founding. The company reportedly expected<\/a> about $5 billion in losses\u00a0on $3.7 billion in revenue last year. <\/p>\n

Expenditures like staffing, office rent, and AI training infrastructure are to blame. ChatGPT was at one point\u00a0costing OpenAI an estimated<\/a> $700,000 per day.<\/p>\n

Recently, OpenAI admitted<\/a> it needs \u201cmore capital than it imagined\u201d as it prepares to undergo a corporate restructuring to attract new investments. To reach profitability, OpenAI is said to be considering increasing the price of its various subscript<\/a>ion tiers; the company optimistically projects<\/a> its revenue will reach $100 billion in 2029, matching the current annual sales of Nestl\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
