\n\tWill Smith will not be joining Warner Bros. and director Drew Goddard in a new Matrix<\/em> movie for the studio, insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat leaves open a mystery Smith sparked on Monday with a cryptic Instagram post<\/a> noting how Smith passed on the starring role of Neo in the original 1999 sci-fi epic The Matrix<\/em>, directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Instagram post \u2014 featuring Matrix<\/em>-style computer font \u2014 stated: \u201cIn 1997, the Wachowski\u2019s offered Will Smith the role of Neo in The Matrix.<\/em> Smith turned it down. He chose Wild Wild West<\/em>, believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would The Matrix <\/em>have been like with Will Smith as Neo? Wake up, Will\u2026 The Matrix has you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Matrix<\/em> went on to be a generation-defining hit, while Barry Sonnenfeld\u2019s Wild Wild West<\/em> was beaten up by critics and flopped at the box office. Smith starred opposite Kevin Kline, and played a gun-blazing former Civil War hero, in a rare miss for the king of the 1990s box office.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt is unclear what, if anything, Smith\u2019s post on Monday is teasing.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoddard, the writer-director behind\u00a0The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0World War Z<\/em>,\u00a0was tapp<\/a>ed to write and direct a new\u00a0Matrix\u00a0<\/em>feature for Warner Bros. last year. This will be the first\u00a0Matrix<\/em> film not directed by a Wachowski sibling, though Lana Wachowski will act as an executive producer on the new project.<\/p>\n

\n\tReleased just over 25 years ago,\u00a0The Matrix\u00a0<\/em>swept the imaginations of audiences with a mind-bending story, envelope-pushing special effects and a defining performance from Keanu Reeves. The movie, grossing $467 million worldwide at the time, became a pop culture touchstone. The Matrix Reloaded<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Matrix Revolutions\u00a0<\/em>were released back to back in 2003 to extend the film franchise, with The Matrix: Resurrections<\/em> arriving in 2021.<\/p>\n

\n\tSmith rose to fame as a rapper and star of the \u201990s sitcom\u00a0The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<\/em>, and became one of the world\u2019s biggest movie stars, doing films such as\u00a0Independence Day<\/em>\u00a0(1996) and\u00a0Men in Black<\/em>\u00a0(1997).\u00a0He landed a hit last year with co-star Martin Lawrence in Sony\u2019s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, <\/em>which aimed in part to jump-start Smith\u2019s movie career after he faced a scandal after slapping Oscar host Chris Rock on live television in 2022.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
