Movie giant Lionsgate \u2014 best-known for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Wick<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saw<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunger <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> franchises \u2014 wanted to release the film in the US. But the studio had big problems. Thirty-six of them, to be precise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They said it had too many f*cks,\u201d Mann tells TNW on a video call from LA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All those f-bombs were pushing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> towards an R rating, which would slash the potential audience.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To secure the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PG-13 needed to extend the reach, those profanities\u00a0had to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easier said than done. Reshoots would cost a bomb and post-production magic couldn\u2019t scrub the dirty words. Thankfully, Mann had another trick up his sleeve. Quietly, the British filmmaker had been building a startup \u2014 called <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flawlessai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Flawless<\/a> \u2014 that develops AI video editing tools. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided a new field test: sw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing f-bombs\u00a0for gentler epithets.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">How Startup Amsterdam Boosts Innovation and Growth at TNW Conference<\/p>\n<p>Discover how the City of Amsterdam partnered with TNW to amplify its startup ecosystem, attract global talent, and foster innovation that drives economic impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann asked the cast to record cleaner verbiage. Once the audio was ready, the Flawless system went to work. The software first converted the actors\u2019 faces <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into 3D models. Neural networks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then analysed and reconstructed the performances. Facial expressions\u00a0and lip movements were synchronised with the new dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experiment proved successful. All 36 f-bombs were replaced without a trace. Well, nearly all of them. \u201cI did one f*ck in the end,\u201d Mann says. \u201cI\u2019m allowed one f*ck, apparently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satisfied by his restraint, the ratings board gave <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the coveted PG-13. The film became a sleeper hit, grossing <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/fall-2-confirmed-everything-we-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $21 million against a budget of just $3 million. A sequel is now shooting in Thailand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buoyed by his success, Mann began commercialising the software. It can even copy and paste performances from one shot to another. All the outputs offer Hollywood-grade 4K resolution, 16-bit colour depth, and ACES colour spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early access applications for the tool are now open. A full product release is slated for the first half of this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s already altering where people are shooting,\u201d says Mann. \u201cAnd as it extends out, I think it\u2019s going to completely transform how we make <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also not the only tool that Mann wants to transform movies. Around a decade ago, he began developing another AI system for filmmaking. Like DeepEditor, it began life on a Hollywood set.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_big_break\"><\/span>The big break<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After progressing through film school, British TV, and short films, Mann got his big Hollywood break in 2014. Lionsgate had offered him the director\u2019s chair for the crime thriller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heist. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An all-star cast led by Robert De Niro was also on board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann relished the experience. \u201cIt was a complete privilege. We were very close on the movie and really happy with the English language version. But then I saw a foreign translation of the movie.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann was \u201chorrified\u201d by the dubbing. His script had been rewritten and the actors\u2019 gestures had mutated. The culprit, he discovered, pervaded across the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem stemmed from Hollywood\u2019s established translation process. When films are dubbed, the scripts are typically rewritten to fit the original mouth movements. If the new lines still don\u2019t match the old gestures, voice actors try to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">synchronise the two by twisting their delivery in unnatural directions. The results range from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peppercontent.io\/blog\/worst-dubbed-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">amusing to infuriating<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s really bad for the filmmakers and the actors, because it\u2019s not the authentic representation of their work,\u201d Mann says. \u201cAnd as an experience, you\u2019re not immersed if it\u2019s not in synchronicity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann began investigating novel dubbing techniques. He explored head scans, but the rendering lacked realism. The dubbing merely moved from one uncanny valley to another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing faith in established VFX, Mann started searching beyond the film industry. He soon stumbled upon a promising alternative: <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gvv.mpi-inf.mpg.de\/projects\/DeepVideoPortraits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep Video Portraits.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hollywood_meets_GenAI\"><\/span>Hollywood meets GenAI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unveiled in 2018, Deep Video Portraits was a big breakthrough for the nascent generative AI sector. The technique enables photo-realistic reanimation of faces using just an input video. Each facial gesture and lip movement can then be synchronised with speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The life-like results stunned observers \u2014 including Mann. \u201cIt blew my mind,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann reached out to the research team. To build the idea into a business, he sought advice from Nick Lynes, a tech industry veteran. Together, the duo co-founded Flawless in 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The startup\u2019s first product was TrueSync, a dubbing tool that studios are applying to Hollywood movies. Among them is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venom: The Last Dance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Marvel blockbuster released last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flawless also showcased a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/flawless-ai-lip-dubbing-movies-tv-1236068071\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sizzle reel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of AI-translated trailers at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival. Still, not every client is ready to brag about the results.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Threatening_acts\"><\/span>Threatening acts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the premiere of Fall approached, Lionsgate became anxious. GenAI was still a novel term back then, but unions were already concerned about the threats to performers. The studio feared the film\u2019s visual dubbing would spark a backlash.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey were going to pull the release if this wasn\u2019t cleared up with Screen Actors Guild and there were mega nerves,\u201d Mann recalls. \u201cBut luckily, we had planned for the consent workflows and [rights protections] early on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flawless built the plan on several pillars. All the data would be legitimately sourced \u2014 rather than scraped without permission like so many GenAI firms do. Every output would be fully rights-cleared. The acting would remain true to the original performances. Any significant changes would require additional consent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The startup also restricted the system\u2019s operations. \u201cWe often call our models \u2018narrow models\u2019,\u201d says Mann. \u201cThey\u2019re large, but they\u2019re focused on a specific aspect and curated for purpose. They\u2019re very targeted and based on clean data that can be used for that purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flawless presented the plan to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). \u201cThey gave it the thumbs up,\u201d says Mann. In August 2022, Fall was released theatrically in the US. The film \u2014 and the dubbing \u2014 were big successes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few months later, GenAI exploded into the mainstream. The trigger was the November launch of ChatGPT. A wave of image, text and audio generators followed closely in its wake. Suddenly, AI\u2019s threats to actors, artists and copyrights had become public concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Another_take\"><\/span>Another take<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July 2023, the SAG-AFTRA actors\u2019 union began the longest strike in its history. One of the guild\u2019s prime concerns was the threat posed by AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After months of intense negotiations, the union reached a deal with Hollywood\u2019s top companies. Under the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sagaftra.org\/contracts-industry-resources\/member-resources\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, any digital alterations would require explicit consent \u2014 unless they\u2019re \u201csubstantially as scripted, performed, and\/or recorded.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann welcomed the terms. They wouldn\u2019t curb lip synchronisation for foreign-language dubbing, but would enforce strict consent requirements for any meaningful changes to script or performances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new rules presented business opportunities for Flawless. Named the Artistic Rights Treasury (A.R.T.), the system shares AI-generated edits with performers. If the actor approves the changes, they can consent within the app. If they don\u2019t like the new versions, they can submit their own takes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A.R.T has now been baked into DeepEditor. Mann believes the blend of AI editing and safeguards creates a unique product. \u201cDeepEditor will be the first legitimate enterprise AI solution on the market,\u201d he says. \u201cEverything else is laced with controversy and rights issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_better_future_for_Hollywood\"><\/span>A better future for Hollywood?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Over time, Mann expects GenAI to\u00a0unleash endless opportunities for filmmakers. He envisions shrinking costs, less drudgery, and lower barriers to entry. If all goes to plan, Hollywood will regain an appetite for originality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe key to this industry thriving is innovating \u2014\u00a0and embracing innovation responsibly,\u201d Mann says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet even he has lessons to learn about working responsibly.
