He was 89.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore died Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida, of complications recovering from surgery, his rep Jeremy Westby announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCalled \u201cthe greatest of all soul duos\u201d by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted the pair in 1992, Sam &amp; Dave worked with the songwriting\/production team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter \u2014 and used Booker T &amp; the M.G.\u2019s and the Memphis Horns as their backing band \u2014 to produce a string of indelible rave-up hits from 1965-68.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTheir combined talent produced fevered back-and-forth exchanges in \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know Like I Know,\u201d \u201cHold On, I\u2019m Coming,\u201d \u201cYou Got Me Hummin\u2019,\u201d \u201cSoul Man\u201d and \u201cI Thank You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAlong with labelmate Otis Redding, Sam &amp; Dave were show-stopping live performers, electrifying Stax revues in the mid-1960s and fueling Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi to create their own Ray Ban-wearing homage as The Blues Brothers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBorn on Oct. 12, 1935, in Miami \u2014 where he first met his soon-to-be-sidekick in 1961 \u2014 Samuel David Moore was a church-reared singer who performed with such gospel quarters as The Gales and The Millionaires and once reportedly turned down an offer to replace a departing Sam Cooke in The Soul Stirrers. Moore and Prater, who was also an experienced gospel singer, crossed paths at Miami\u2019s The King of Hearts club, where they were discovered by producer Henry Stone, who signed them to Roulette Records.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tExperiencing only minor success at Roulette, the duo\u2019s career began to take off after they were signed by Atlantic Records\u2019 Jerry Wexler in 1964, then \u201cloaned\u201d out to Stax to produce, record and release their records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe pair\u2019s November 1965 single, \u201cYou Don\u2019t Know Like I Know,\u201d launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of 10 straight Top 20 Billboard R&amp;B classics, including \u201cHold On, I\u2019m Coming\u201d (1966), \u201cYou Got Me Hummin\u2019\u201d (\u201966), \u201cWhen Something Is Wrong With My Baby\u201d (\u201967), \u201cSoul Man\u201d (\u201967) and \u201cI Thank You\u201d (\u201968). A majority of those were written by Hayes and Porter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe two, often at odds, broke up in 1970 with the end of their relationship with Stax. Sam &amp; Dave\u2019s off-and-on relationship continued until 1981, when they enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with The Blues Brothers\u2019 cover of \u201cSoul Man\u201d in 1979. Their last performance together came on New Year\u2019s Eve 1981 at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. Prater died in a car crash on April 9, 1988.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore launched his own solo career after breaking up with Prater the first time in 1970, recording several singles for an album at Atlantic that weren\u2019t released for more than 30 years after the murder of the record\u2019s producer, King Curtis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore toured with other soul artists, including Wilson Pickett in Europe in spring 1982, when he married Joyce McRae, who helped him overcome a lengthy drug addiction. Moore not only went public with his addiction in 1983, he became a strong anti-drug advocate and worked as a volunteer for anti-drug programs. His wife remained his business manager until his death, working with him to advocate for artist\u2019s rights, royalties and pension payments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore found his opportunities as a solo performer apart from Prater waning, and at one point he sued Prater to prevent him from touring as Sam &amp; Dave with another singer, Sam Daniels. Moore eventually formed an organization, Artists and Others Against Imposters, to prevent groups from deceiving the public by going out without their original members, testifying before Congress in 1989.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore performed on Don Henley\u2019s <em>Building the Perfect Beast<\/em> album in 1984 on \u201cYou\u2019re Not Drinking Enough\u201d and two years later rerecorded \u201cSoul Man\u201d with Lou Reed for the film of the same name, reaching No. 30 on the U.K. singles chart. In 1988, he joined the Elwood Blues Revue, featuring Aykroyd and The Blues Brothers band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in Monkee Michael Nesmith\u2019s 1988 film spoof, <em>Tapeheads<\/em>, with Junior Walker as the \u201clegendary\u201d soul duo, The Swanky Modes. They later performed \u201cOrdinary Man\u201d from the movie on <em>Late Night With David Letterman<\/em>. The pairing represented a rare joining of artists from the Stax and Motown labels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore toured Europe with Booker T &amp; the M.G.\u2019s, Carla Thomas and Eddie Floyd in 1990, and in 1991 he recorded several songs for <em>Red, Hot &amp; Blues<\/em> with Republican Party official and avid blues guitarist Lee Atwater. That same year, he was the recipient of a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm &amp; Blues Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 1992, Sam &amp; Dave were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Moore bringing Hayes and Porter \u2014 as well as Prater\u2019s eldest son, David Prater Jr. \u2014 onstage to share the honor. In 1992, Moore recorded several songs with major fan Bruce Springsteen for his <em>Human Touch<\/em> album and had a hit in 1994 with his Conway Twitty duet, \u201cRainy Night in Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore continued to tour throughout the \u201890s, releasing \u201cI\u2019m a Dole Man\u201d for presidential candidate Bob Dole to play at voter rallies, though the publishing company forced the campaign to stop using it. In 1997, he published his autobiography, <em>Sam &amp; Dave \u2013 An Oral History<\/em>, co-written with Dave Marsh, which offered an honest look at his drug problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore appeared in <em>Blues Brothers 2000<\/em>, the 1998 sequel, as Rev. Morris, fulfilling a childhood dream of being a preacher and singing \u201cJohn the Revelator.\u201d He also had roles in Armsted Maupin\u2019s PBS series, <em>Tales of the City,<\/em> as Rev. Willie Sessums and played himself in Paul Simon\u2019s <em>One Trick Pony<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 1999, \u201cSoul Man\u201d was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> would recognize the song as one of the 500 greatest of all time in 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore\u2019s previously unreleased 1971 solo album, <em>Plenty Good Lovin<\/em>\u2019, finally came out in 2002, featuring Aretha Franklin on piano for the King Curtis-produced disc. He then appeared in D.A. Pennebaker\u2019s documentary <em>Only the Strong Survive<\/em>, chronicling his drug abuse. In 2003, he was a featured performer at Springsteen\u2019s Asbury Park Christmas shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore released his solo album <em>Overnight Sensational<\/em>, produced by Randy Jackson, in 2006, featuring cameos by Sting, Mariah Carey, Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Fantasia, among others. One of the songs, a cover of \u201cYou Are So Beautiful\u201d featuring Billy Preston and Eric Clapton, received a Grammy nomination. That same year, he participated in a tribute to Pickett with Springsteen, Elvis Costello and The Edge as the closing performance at the Grammys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMoore performed \u201cSoul Man\u201d and \u201cHold On, I\u2019m Comin\u2019\u201d with Springsteen and The E-Street Band at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\u2019s 25th anniversary concert in 2009 and sang at a George Jones tribute concert in Nashville in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to his wife, he is survived, by his own estimate, the \u201c14 or 15 children\u201d he fathered by several women, according to an interview he gave to <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/sam-moore-can-t-stand-up-for-falling-down-9196233.html\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/arts-entertainment\/music\/features\/sam-moore-can-t-stand-up-for-falling-down-9196233.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Independent<\/a><\/em> in 2002.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m in touch with three or four of them; that\u2019s sad when you consider there\u2019s so many of them,\u201d he said. \u201cI used to crave connection with my children, but some have chosen not to make that connection, some of them resent me or want me to pay for them.
