Learn how to convey your skills, answer questions effectively, and avoid common missteps.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\n<p>Over the past decade, I\u2019ve reviewed hundreds of CVs, conducted countless interviews, and led numerous technical tests for SEO candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, I\u2019ve met many exceptional professionals \u2013 but I\u2019ve also noticed a recurring pattern of common interview mistakes that can hold even the most talented candidates back.<\/p>\n<p>Below are 10 common mistakes I\u2019ve observed in SEO interviews \u2013 and how you can easily avoid them.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-projecting-arrogance-instead-of-confidence-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Projecting_arrogance_instead_of_confidence\"><\/span>1. Projecting arrogance instead of confidence\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Confidence is great! While imposter syndrome is common in SEO, it\u2019s important to stay realistically confident in your skills and experience.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is a fine line between projecting confidence and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing arrogant.<\/p>\n<p>For example, talk about your successes, such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complicated projects you navigated.<\/li>\n<li>Great results you achieved.<\/li>\n<li>Buy-in you gained.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be articulate in what you achieved and how.<\/p>\n<p>Show off your theoretical knowledge. Discuss ideas and theories with your interviewer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t assume they will agree with you, though. This can be arrogance.<\/p>\n<p>SEO is not a \u201cone-size-fits-all\u201d practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You may have different experiences from your interviewer\u2019s, which may have led you both to opposing conclusions. This is fine. It happens in SEO all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Some people make the mistake of thinking it\u2019s OK to argue and dismiss others\u2019 opinions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This rarely works well in any workplace and can be especially harmful during an interview.<\/p>\n<p>When I interview, I look for team players \u2013 confident in their knowledge yet humble and open to learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They embrace new evidence and contribute to discussions that elevate the entire team\u2019s understanding, including their own.<\/p>\n<p>If you stray too far into arrogance during an interview, you may come across as difficult to teach or lead and not open to feedback.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-giving-hazy-details-about-projects-and-successes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Giving_hazy_details_about_projects_and_successes\"><\/span>2. Giving hazy details about projects and successes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Interviews are your time to shine. They allow you to show off some of your best work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another mistake I\u2019ve seen in interviews is assuming interviewers can fill in the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates talk about a project or website they have worked on but fail to convey its significance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They mention website migrations, expecting non-SEO interviewers to understand the complexities involved.<\/p>\n<p>They discuss turning around a traffic slump without giving any data. Avoid this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to give the specifics.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a good acronym for constructing interview answers called <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalcareers.service.gov.uk\/careers-advice\/interview-advice\/the-star-method\">STAR<\/a>. It stands for:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Situation<\/strong>: What was the issue or opportunity you were facing?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Task<\/strong>: What was your role or responsibility in this and the goal you were working toward?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Action<\/strong>: What did you do to address the situation?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Result<\/strong>: What happened because of your actions? What successes, learnings, or results can you share?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using this method, you may find it easier to hit all the salient points that give the interviewers clarity and perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Try to choose examples that have an outcome that you\u2019re proud of or can at least explain what made it fall short.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>How to become exceptional at SEO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-ignoring-the-question\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Ignoring_the_question\"><\/span>3. Ignoring the question<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Candidates sometimes don\u2019t have time to think of an answer to the question or feel they don\u2019t have one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They try to talk around the question and bring it back to something they feel more comfortable discussing.<\/p>\n<p>If an interviewer asks, \u201cTalk about a time when you faced a complex website migration and what did you do?\u201d or \u201cHow would you handle a stakeholder not signing off on your recommendations?\u201d that\u2019s exactly what they want to know.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Avoid going off on a tangent and ensure you address the question directly.<\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, interviewers will have a list of questions they are asking each candidate.<\/p>\n<p>They may even use these to compare candidates against each other. If you\u2019re not directly answering them, you put yourself at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, take some time to think about the answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Explain that you want to answer well and need a minute to organize your thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have an experience relevant to a question or have not encountered something before, explain that to the interviewer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tell them you haven\u2019t \u201cmigrated a website before,\u201d but mention what you would do in that situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you make something up, passing it off as a situation you faced, you risk being exposed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You may be asked for details you can\u2019t provide, or you may realize that a savvy interviewer has been researching the company or website as you talk about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-not-addressing-your-audience-well\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Not_addressing_your_audience_well\"><\/span>4. Not addressing your audience well<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Building rapport with interviewers is key to a successful interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Answer their questions clearly, making it easy for them to recognize your knowledge and experience.<\/p>\n<p>To do that well, you need to understand your audience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You should address their questions using the language and tone they are addressing you and gauge their level of SEO knowledge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It may be tempting to impress non-SEO stakeholders with industry jargon, but if they don\u2019t know what it means, they won\u2019t understand the impact of what you\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, if you\u2019re being interviewed by the head of SEO, relying on jargon or complex-sounding projects without substance can risk being seen as insincere or unqualified.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-being-disrespectful-of-the-progress-of-the-site-s\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Being_disrespectful_of_the_progress_of_the_sites\"><\/span>5. Being disrespectful of the progress of the site(s)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you are talking to another SEO at the company or agency, don\u2019t assume they are negligent in not addressing that JavaScript issue you\u2019ve noticed on their site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t think their approach to SEO is basic because there is still an obvious area of expansion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be respectful. It\u2019s OK to acknowledge that you noticed these issues with their sites, but assume you aren\u2019t telling them anything they don\u2019t already know.<\/p>\n<p>Chances are some procedural or technical blocks are stopping them from fixing it. Being unprepared for the types of questions asked<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Interviews are nerve-wracking!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s understandable if your mind goes blank when asked to share specific examples of your work or knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most frustrating mistakes I see in interviews (and have made myself!) is not being able to remember the details of the<em> <\/em>perfect<em> <\/em>example of a project that would have answered an interviewer\u2019s question.<\/p>\n<p>A good way to avoid this is to come prepared with projects or challenges that exemplify some core areas of SEO that you are likely to face in the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Look at the job listing again and see what experience they hope candidates will have.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given the scope, seniority, and complexity of the sites, consider the situations and tasks you may face in that role.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you are interviewing for a senior technical SEO role, you may want to prepare examples of projects you\u2019ve worked on that included:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A challenging crawling, indexing, parsing, or rendering issue.<\/li>\n<li>A large, complicated technical SEO project that you needed to gain buy-in from stakeholders for.<\/li>\n<li>A sudden drop in traffic or rankings that needed to be investigated.<\/li>\n<li>A website migration that you had a leading role in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are interviewing for an SEO account manager at an agency, you may want to prepare times when:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You had to explain to stakeholders a drop in performance and any re<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>l action planned.<\/li>\n<li>Present an SEO proposal to a group of people with varying SEO literacy and explain how you helped them get on board with the plan.<\/li>\n<li>You presented at a client pitch, the work you put into the pitch, and how you onboarded that client.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Come prepared with example projects you can adapt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think of a successful project and how you made it work.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Give an example of an unsuccessful project and what you would do differently.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This may mean writing notes about these projects and key points, such as tasks and results, to jog your memory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, you want to have a few well-detailed and thought-out examples that you can adapt using the STAR method on the fly at the interview.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-all-talk-no-substance\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_All_talk_no_substance\"><\/span>7. All talk, no substance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Waffle. Meandering. Stalling for time out loud.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you want to call it, this I possibly one of the most common mistakes I\u2019ve seen in interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Starting to answer the question before knowing what you are going to say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Again, it\u2019s understandable. We feel like we need to answer the question as soon as it is asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In reality, though, it\u2019s OK to take some time to think it through first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the question and address that directly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Consider it a school assignment where you get a mark for every point you hit.<\/p>\n<p>Structure your answers clearly to help interviewers find the information they\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the waffling comes because the question wasn\u2019t asked well. Perhaps it isn\u2019t entirely clear what the interviewer is asking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t fall into the trap of trying to answer a question you don\u2019t fully understand.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s OK to ask clarifying questions.<\/p>\n<p>If you still don\u2019t have an answer, you can explain that it isn\u2019t something you have encountered or even heard of.<\/p>\n<p>However, this gives you something to go away and look into.<\/p>\n<p>You could even ask the interviewers what they think about the topic or what they would do in the situation they asked about.<\/p>\n<p>Most interviewers will seek team members willing to learn and expand their knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>In the best case, they will see your willingness to learn and grow from others around you.<\/p>\n<p>Worst case, you have another side of SEO or interviewing techniques to study for the next role you apply for!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Did deeper: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>What to do if you lose your SEO job: The emergency handbook<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-trying-to-bribe-or-threaten-interviewers\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Trying_to_bribe_or_threaten_interviewers\"><\/span>8. Trying to bribe or threaten interviewers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This should probably go without saying, but as I\u2019ve encountered it in interviews before, I guess it needs to be said.<\/p>\n<p>Please don\u2019t threaten or try to bribe your interviewers.<\/p>\n<p>It is highly unlikely that if an interview is going badly, the promise of a link from your friend\u2019s blog to their company\u2019s website will turn it around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t promise them that if they hire you, they will get access to the secrets to your \u201cguaranteed SEO approach\u201d if you have not been able to demonstrate your competency through the questions they\u2019ve asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t threaten a negative SEO attack on them or their competitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Avoid suggesting they only wanted to interview you to steal your ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just don\u2019t be rude or dishonest. You won\u2019t get the job, and you won\u2019t be kept in the database of possible future candidates.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-contacting-everyone-in-the-company-to-get-an-in\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Contacting_everyone_in_the_company_to_get_an_%E2%80%98in\"><\/span>9. Contacting everyone in the company to get an \u2018in\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another mistake I\u2019ve seen is a candidate getting too enthusiastic about standing out from the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, they contact anyone in the company they can to make themselves known.<\/p>\n<p>It is great to show that you are interested in the company and the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the interviewers have said it\u2019s OK for you to contact them after the interview, it is absolutely fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, be considerate when you contact interviewers outside of the interview process.<\/p>\n<p>It may come across as keen, but do it too much, and it can become difficult for people to respond, especially if they aren\u2019t directly involved in the interviewing process.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s OK to follow up sparingly and with the right people, but be mindful of how busy interviewers are when running hiring processes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your keen attitude may be too much to handle if not appropriate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-being-dishonest-about-the-level-of-involvement-had-in-the-project\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Being_dishonest_about_the_level_of_involvement_had_in_the_project\"><\/span>10.
