\n Lululemon against capitalism? Now that\u2019s a stretch!<\/p>\n

The trendy athleisure brand known for its pricey leggings and yoga pants drew fire this week for promoting an event teaching participants to \u201cresist capitalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Online commenters mocked the Canadian company \u2014 whose stock price has surged amid the coronavirus pandemic \u2014 after it plugged the \u201cDecolonizing Gender\u201d workshop hosted by Rebby Kern, a yoga instructor and Lululemon ambassador.<\/p>\n

Lululemon featured an ad for Kern\u2019s Sept. 17 workshop aiming to \u201cunveil historical erasure & resist capitalism\u201d in a Sept. 5 Instagram post that also promoted four other \u201cmembers of our collective.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics slammed the post as ironic and hypocritical, given that Lululemon couldn\u2019t sell its $138 tights or $148 jogger pants if it weren\u2019t operating in a capitalist society.<\/p>\n

\u201cLMAO \u2018resist capitalism\u2019 what do you think your entire business is predicated off of?\u201d one Instagram commenter wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t see you giving away pants for free\u2026or even selling them at an affordable cost.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow exactly does a publicly traded company resist capitalism?\u201d Chris Manning tweeted. \u201cWill they be delisting from the stock market and changing their business model to a worker\u2019s co-op?\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, Lululemon noted that the event was organized by a brand ambassador. It removed the post from the company\u2019s Instagram page\u00a0late Friday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis\u00a0is not a lululemon forum and it does not represent the company\u2019s views,\u201d a company spokesperson said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kern did not immedia<\/a>tely respond to a request for comment Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lululemon made the Instagram post three days before it reported a $489.5 million gross profit for the second quarter thanks to a 155 percent spike in net direct-to-consumer revenue. The recent growth came as the COVID-19 pandemic led hunkered-down consumers to eschew office wear for comfier clothes.<\/p>\n

The Vancouver-based retailer has also seen its stock price climb nearly 40 percent since early March to close at $320 on Thursday.<\/p>\n

CEO Calvin McDonald has stood by the brand\u2019s steep prices for its high-end casual wear last year, telling The Wall Street Journal\u00a0that there was \u201cno need\u201d to cut them.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
