\n\tDamon Wayans is opening up about his reason for \u201cpurposefully\u201d getting himself fired from Saturday Night Live<\/em> following his short run on the NBC show in the \u201980s.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor and comedia<\/a>n app<\/a>eared on the Peacock docuseries<\/a>\u00a0SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night<\/em>, where he looked back at his time on the sketch comedy series as well as his departure. He was a castmember on SNL<\/em> during season 11 in 1985.<\/p>\n

\n\tWayans said he had already been working on characters ahead of his audition, as he felt he was \u201cborn to be on\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/em>.\u201d He also recalled getting some advice from Eddie Murphy (who was also on SNL<\/em> in the early \u201980s) while appearing in Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> in 1984.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEddie\u2019s advice to me was, \u2018Write your own sketches. Otherwise, they\u2019re gonna give you some Black people shit to do, and you ain\u2019t gonna like it,\u201d Wayans said.<\/p>\n

\n\tOnce he was cast, Wayans said he quickly realized, \u201cEverything Eddie said came true.\u201d He recalled trying to pitch characters and sketches to SNL<\/em> writers, \u201cbut they would shoot my ideas down.\u201d He added, \u201cThey started writing me in their sketches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWayans said they would also give him stereotypical or offensive roles, but he recalled pushing back at times: \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Hell no.\u2019 I said, \u2018Listen, my mother\u2019s gonna watch this show. I can\u2019t do this. I won\u2019t do this.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Wayans\u2019 frustrations eventually reached a breaking point during a sketch titled \u201cMr. Monopoly.\u201d<\/a> He recalled it being chosen over one of his skits, which was cut for time once again.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s when he made the last-minute decision to lean into a different stereotype for the live sketch, which ultimately got him fired.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDamon starts doing his lines like a very effeminate gay guy,\u201d Jon Lovitz, former SNL<\/em> writer and castmember, recalled. Griffin Dunne, who was the guest host for the episode, added, \u201cI thought it was weird, but people still laughed. And then Lorne fired him pretty much as he walked off the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWayans admitted, \u201cI snapped. I just did not care. \u2026 I purposefully did that because I wanted him [SNL<\/em> creator Lorne Michaels] to fire me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an old interview clip featured in the docuseries, Michaels explained, \u201cHaving not fired anybody for the first five years, it was really, really hard. But it had to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWayans basically \u201cbroke the ultimate [SNL<\/em>] golden rule, which is no surprises,\u201d according to Live From New York<\/em> author James Andrew Miller. Former writer A. Whitney Brown added, \u201cYou cannot go rogue. You cannot try to steal a sketch.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter his stint on the NBC sketch comedy series, the comedian went on to find success in several comedy movies such as Mo\u2019 Money<\/em> and Major Payne<\/em>, among others. He also later starred on the sketch show\u00a0In Living Color<\/em>, which ran from 1990-94.<\/p>\n

\n\tWayans returned to host SNL <\/em>in 1995, nine years after he was fired.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
