Mustard has shared that a number of rapp<\/a>ers got a shot at the beat that eventually became Kendrick Lamar\u2018s \u201cHey Now\u201d \u2014 but they turned it down.<\/p>\n When speaking to\u00a0People<\/a><\/em>in an interview published on Friday (January 17), the producer remembered that he made the beat sometime around 2019. Initially he shared it not with Kendrick, but a different West Coast rapper.<\/p>\n AD LOADING…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI played it for YG\u2026 I was trying to make a West Coast version of \u2018Grindin\u2019.\u2019 That\u2019s why it\u2019s so empty like that,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s just weird sounds. [H]e didn\u2019t end up doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n Then, Mustard continued, he let a Migos member get a crack at it.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter YG, And I played it for Quavo and I\u2019m like, \u2018Quavo man, if you get this, if you can connect to this song, I\u2019m telling you,\u2019 he\u2019s like, \u2018What the hell you want me to do to it? You want me to whisper on the beat?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u201cAlright.\u201d So I didn\u2019t force it on him.\u201d<\/p>\n After that, the beatmaker said he played it for Ty Dolla $ign. While Ty made it into a song, Mustard said, \u201cI never was all the way there with it.\u201d<\/p>\n As for how the beat got to Kendrick, here\u2019s what Mustard said.<\/p>\n \u201cI was talking to Kendrick one day and I was just like, \u2018Man, I got this really weird-ass beat, but I really love it. Like, I know that I love this beat.\u2019 And I sent it to him and right away he said, \u2018Oh yeah, I got it.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Alright.\u2019 But still, I hadn\u2019t heard it until I went to the \u2018Not Like Us\u2019 video shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Back in early December, \u201cHey Now\u201d was one of two of Mustard\u2019s GNX\u00a0<\/em>contributions to make it to Billboard\u2019s top 10.
