Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ers alive, but a seasoned producer whose endless pursuit of pure creative expression and musical experimentation has carved out a decorated, if not underappreciated, discography on the other side of the boards.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 30 years, the OutKast legend has quietly produced dozens of songs for his iconic rap group with Big Boi, including some of their biggest hits, as well as tracks for an array of other artists such as Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Kelis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-player\">\n<div class=\"ad-indicator-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-indicator\">AD<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"border\">\n<div class=\"ad-border-top\">\n<p>AD LOADING&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-border-bottom\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"video-player-ad\" id=\"mm-player\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unlike many Hip Hop producers, 3 Stacks doesn\u2019t rely solely on drum machines, sampling equipment or computer software. Ever the adventurer, Andr\u00e9 has incorporated a number of instruments into his production, including the guitar, piano, saxophone and, of course, the flute \u2014 his beloved musical weapon that anchors his debut solo album <em>New Blue Sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Like many musicians who come from humble beginnings and have a feel-first approach, he\u2019s done it all without being able to read a single note. \u201cI never learned music,\u201d he admitted on the <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/54pcvwdYcRZ9PGLs4rS4Sr\" target=\"_blank\">Tour\u00e9 Show<\/a><\/em> in 2023. \u201cIf I played a chord, I never knew what I was playing. For me, it\u2019s shapes. I\u2019m just stretching my fingers out and whatever sounds good, I land on it and that ends up being \u2018Ms. Jackson.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, <em>HipHopDX<\/em> explores the other (often slept-on) side of Andr\u00e9 3000\u2019s musical talent: his career as a producer.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:#000000;margin-top:5px\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Two_Dope_Boyz_Behind_the_Boards\"><\/span><b>Two Dope Boyz (Behind the Boards)<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Outkast - Elevators (Me &amp; You) (Official HD Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uqB_UVlhlPA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After Organized Noize \u2014 the Dungeon-dwelling production team comprised of Sleepy Brown, Ray Murray and the late Rico Wade \u2014 scored the entirety of their breakthrough debut album <em>Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik<\/em>, OutKast stepped up to the MPC3000 and introduced themselves as producers on their sophomore LP <em>ATLiens<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Much like they did on the mic, Andr\u00e9 3000 and Big Boi made an instant impact. They didn\u2019t just chip in with deep cuts, but crafted some of the album\u2019s best and biggest hits including \u201cElevators (Me &amp; You)\u201d and \u201cATLiens.\u201d Despite them being just 21 at the time, it was im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely clear that Andr\u00e9 and Antwan had vision to go with their production chops, adding an extraterrestrial and Afrofuturistic touch to the red clay funk of <em>Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learned from being under [Organized Noize] for so long,\u201d Big Boi told <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2016\/08\/outkast-atliens-20-years-anniversary-big-boi-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\">SPIN<\/a><\/em> of their work on <em>ATLiens<\/em>. \u201cWhat better way to paint a picture than being able to create the soundscape for your words? We were maturing and coming of age then. Just trying to figure out, \u2018Where are we going?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cA lot of those [songs] just came from casual conversation. Just beating on the beat machine, tinkering around with little stuff in the studio, finding a rhythm, and then we\u2019d just kinda sit there. I really wish we had, like, eight Go-Pros in the studio so I could look back at and see how stuff happened. It was truly magical.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:#000000;margin-top:5px\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beats_Thatll_Bust_Ya_Shit_Open\"><\/span><b>Beats That\u2019ll Bust Ya Shit Open<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Outkast - SpottieOttieDopaliscious (Animated Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KwhBreZic8I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Boosted by the positive reception to <em>ATLiens<\/em>, 3 Stacks and Daddy Fat Sax took on more production duties on their third (and arguably finest) album <em>Aquemini<\/em>, with Organized Noize only contributing four songs to the 16-track effort.<\/p>\n<p>Its title \u2014 an amalgamation of their respective zodiac signs \u2014 wasn\u2019t the only clear distinction made between the partners-in-rhyme. While Big Boi came up with the catchy hooks, Andr\u00e9 3000 took on the role of producer-in-chief, brainstorming the beats for \u201cRosa Parks,\u201d \u201cChonkyfire\u201d and others while also sketching out the album\u2019s hilarious skits.<\/p>\n<p>When he wasn\u2019t experimenting with unusual instruments, such as playing the kalimba on \u201cHold On, Be Strong,\u201d Dre relied on some of Atlanta\u2019s finest local musicians to bring his ideas to life. He even recruited his stepfather, Rev. Robert Hodo, to play the harmonica on the hoe-down hit \u201cRosa Parks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only did <em>Aquemini<\/em> wow the world, becoming the first Southern rap album to earn the coveted five-mic rating from <em>The Source<\/em> magazine, but Dre and Big\u2019s production on the project won over their mentors. \u201cI think that was the record where OutKast got their props as producers from Rico and Ray and Pat [Sleepy Brown],\u201d the group\u2019s former A&amp;R Kawan Prather <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/creativeloafing.com\/content-168326-the-making-of-outkast-s-aquemini\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> of <em>Aquemini<\/em>\u2018s sonically sublime standout \u201cSpottieOttieDopaliscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:#000000;margin-top:5px\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blasting_Off_Into_the_Earthtones_Stratosphere\"><\/span><b>Blasting Off Into the Earth(tone)\u2019s Stratosphere<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Outkast - B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad) (Official HD Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lVehcuJXe6I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Following the success of <em>ATLiens<\/em> and <em>Aquemini<\/em>, Andr\u00e9 3000 and Big Boi took a cue from Organized Noize and formed their own production team with longtime collaborator Mr. DJ, calling themselves Earthtone III.<\/p>\n<p>Also different was <em>where<\/em> they were recording. In 1999, the duo purchased their very own studio in Atlanta, a complex previously owned by Bobby Brown, and kitted it out with all the equipment they could ever need. They called it Stankonia Studios.<\/p>\n<p>This newfound freedom, in terms of both studio time and tools, was reflected in the music. Drawing inspiration from as far and wide as European raves and Rage Against the Machine, Earthtone III produced the majority of OutKast\u2019s most innovative effort, <em>Stankonia<\/em>, a cosmic Xplosion of space-age funk, bombastic guitar riffs and ecstasy-dropping drum and bass that would make George Clinton pump the brakes on the mothership.<\/p>\n<p>No song better encapsulates this than \u201cB.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad).\u201d \u201cIt was an idea before it was a song,\u201d Andr\u00e9 told <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/outkast-let-their-freak-funk-fly-73447\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em> of the pulse-racing, politically-charged anthem. \u201cWe was at this party in London, and they were playing drum and bass music with an MC rhyming. There wasn\u2019t anything killing me in Hip Hop at the time, but woo, that shit was tough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIt was the tempo I was looking for, so I thought about how to Americanize it. Techno was too cheesy and dance-oriented for people over here [\u2026] But if you make it hard, with feeling and lyrics on top, it\u2019s a new type of music. We call it slumadelic \u2014 slum dance music. That way they can understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:#000000;margin-top:5px\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Prince-Inspired_Prototype\"><\/span><b>The Prince-Inspired Prototype<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Outkast - Hey Ya! Dre not only produced the bulk of his Prince-inspired half of the double album \u2014 even playing the free-jazz saxophone on \u201cShe Lives In My Lap\u201d \u2014 but he was responsible for a handful of highlights on Big Boi\u2019s disc, including \u201cGhettoMusick\u201d and \u201cLast Call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the apex of Andr\u00e9\u2019s work on <em>Speakerboxxx\/The Love Below<\/em> \u2014 if not his entire production career \u2014 remains \u201cHey Ya!,\u201d the diamond-certified megahit that everyone from babies to your baby mama\u2019s mama knows. Not bad for his first go at playing the guitar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been a jack-of-no-trades, but just making it happen. You know, play guitar just enough to play on <em>The Love Below<\/em>. Play piano just enough to do \u2018Ms. Jackson.\u2019 My first chords were \u2018Hey Ya!&#8217;\u201d he confessed to <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/andre-3000-outkast-gq-style-interview\" target=\"_blank\">GQ<\/a><\/em> in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9\u2019s production particularly on <em>The Love Below<\/em> also served as a prototype (no pun intended) for the huge shift in Hip Hop that would soon follow. Kanye West\u2019s <em>808s &amp; Heartbreak<\/em> is widely credited as the album that ushered in the era of melody and vulnerability, creating a lane for him and others including Drake, Kid Cudi and Childish Gambino to thrive in, but there\u2019s an argument to be made that there\u2019d be no \u201cSay You Will\u201d without \u201cPink &amp; Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fractured nature of <em>Speakerboxxx\/The Love Below<\/em> was, unfortunately, a sign of things to come as OutKast released their sixth and final album, <em>Idlewild<\/em>, three years later. By this point, Dre and Big had largely handed the production reins back to Organized Noize, as well as a handful of new names, although 3 Stacks still cooked up heatrocks like the Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg-featuring \u201cHollywood Divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:#000000;margin-top:5px\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outside_Production\"><\/span><b>Outside Production<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kelis - Millionaire (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8qImH-0UCHI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 3000\u2019s production credits outside of OutKast are very much a reflection of his eclectic taste. He\u2019s produced songs for everyone from Gwen Stefani and Gorillaz to Aretha Franklin. And, of course, there\u2019s a fair share of forward-thinking rap and R&amp;B in there, too.<\/p>\n<p>3 Stacks\u2019 first non-OutKast beat came in 2003 courtesy of Kelis\u2019 \u201cMillionaire,\u201d a frenetic, futuristic head-banger that sounds like it was made in the same techno trance as <em>Stankonia<\/em> and some of <em>Speakerboxxx\/The Love Below<\/em>. The song also features a legendary verse from the man himself, as well as some epic, Prince-esque singing.<\/p>\n<p>Dre also kept it in the (Dungeon) family by blessing Big Boi (\u201cYou Ain\u2019t No DJ\u201d), Big Gipp (\u201cBoogie Man\u201d) and Killer Mike (\u201cAKshon\u201d) with off-kilter yet hard-hitting beats. While his collaborative relationship with Kanye West has been somewhat complicated, he also contributed to the rusty, rock-flavored \u201cFire\u201d from Ye\u2019s <em>Kids See Ghosts<\/em> album with Kid Cudi \u2014 a fitting song for a man who once portrayed Jimi Hendrix on the big screen.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:#000000;margin-top:5px\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_Blue_Sun_A_New_Frontier\"><\/span><b><em>New Blue Sun<\/em>: A New Frontier<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Andr\u00e9 3000 - Listening To The Sun (an intimate album film for New Blue Sun 11\/17\/2023)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2nOxSeBhQAA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 Benjamin\u2019s most recent move as a musician is also his most daring. Released in late 2023, <em>New Blue Sun<\/em> is what few fans expected from 3 Stacks\u2019 long-awaited debut solo album, ditching his revered rapping ability and genre-blending beats for ambient spiritual jazz instrumentals.<\/p>\n<p><em>New Blue Sun<\/em> has been reductively referred to as a \u201cflute album,\u201d but it is so much more than that. Yes, Andr\u00e9 plays a variety of flutes on the record after falling in love with woodwind instruments during <em>The Love Below<\/em> era, but he\u2019s one of a number of musicians who make up the Andr\u00e9 3000 Experience alongside legendary composer Carlos Ni\u00f1o, guitarist Nate Mercereau and drummer Deantoni Parks, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The entirely improvised album was also inspired by real-life spiritual experiences, with 3 Stacks\u2019 purring animal noises on \u201cThat Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther\u2026\u201d stemming from an ayahuasca <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> on the tropical island state.<\/p>\n<p>Love it or loathe it, <em>New Blue Sun<\/em> is one of the boldest left turns in music history. It could also see Andr\u00e9 return to the Grammys stage next month and accept the biggest award in music, with <em>New Blue Sun<\/em> nominated for Album of the Year. If he does, he\u2019ll become the first rapper to win the coveted prize more than once.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back on his more than 30-year production career, it\u2019s clear that Andr\u00e9 3000 the beatmaker has operated by the same ethos that has guided him as an artist: explore, innovate and evolve, even if fans aren\u2019t quite ready for it. Though the act of producing forces one to speak through beats instead of bars, Dre\u2019s discography as a producer says everything about who he is as a person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I started producing, I just picked up equipment to see what I could get away with,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/3Y4CQn60lzdI0uRVW784rg\" target=\"_blank\">said in a 2023 interview with Questlove<\/a>. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s all discovery. To me, that\u2019s what I\u2019m selling. I\u2019m selling, \u2018Hey, man. Go towards what you in to.\u2019 That\u2019s what I\u2019ve done all my life.
