\n\tBoth of the previous seasons opened with a shot of an unidentified dead body, setting up a mystery in the background that propelled the comedy-satire through its story on class and relationships. The first season highlighted money and the second sex, and creator Mike White had said that the third season would be a \u201csatirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.\u201d Something that felt like \u201ca rich tapestry\u201d to do another round at White Lotus.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen the second season finished, White said he could be open to giving viewers more answers from the finale, particularly related to Tanya\u2019s husband, Greg (Jon Gries),\u00a0and his involvement in the tragic ending. In a later feature with THR<\/em>, he spoke about revisiting other characters (before Rothwell was announced), the show\u2019s pivot from limited series<\/a> to drama and why he may not open season three with another dead body.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt would be easy to just be full-on anthology, but I think it\u2019s more fun to have little threads through the show. If the show goes on for a couple of seasons, it would be fun to have an all-star season,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think it needs to always be a body [opening the show]. There are so many ways that we want to reinvent the show each year. Like, what is this show \u2014 other than people? A fresh mystery, people maybe expect that. But I don\u2019t feel constrained by expectation. It\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCoolidge added to THR<\/em>: \u201cMike must have some juicy stuff for [Rothwell\u2019s character]. I think that will be the most interesting storyline of all: whatever\u2019s happ<\/a>ened to Natasha\u2019s character. But, yeah, I also want to see Greg get it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen nearing the end of 2023\u2019s SAG-AFTRA strike and finalizing his scripts, White told EW<\/em><\/a> that season three would be \u201ca supersized\u201d\u00a0White Lotus<\/em> \u2014 something the cast announcements are bearing out: \u201cIt\u2019s going to be longer, bigger, crazier. I don\u2019t know what people will think, but I am super excited, so at least for my own barometer, that\u2019s a good thing \u2026 I\u2019m super excited about the content of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWeeks ahead of premiere, White, in his interview with Time<\/em>, expanded on his inspirations for the season (years of travel<\/a>, vacation observations and a personally hard year). The third season explores his interest in Eastern spirituality and wellness practices, along with his skepticism of how Westerners use the medicine on self-care. \u201cThey\u2019re all in some kind of hurt,\u201d White said of this season\u2019s guests. \u201cLike, they\u2019re all dead, but they don\u2019t know it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also said the Thailand-set season will be \u201cmuch, much darker\u201d than the two previous seasons, as well as grander and more epic. \u201cI do feel like the other seasons were a rehearsal for this one,\u201d said White.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
