\n\tThe Weeknd made a surprise app<\/a>earance and performance at the 2025 Grammys after he had announced three years prior that he planned to boycott the show following his 2021 snub.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. introduced the performance as he reflected on criticism that the Recording Academy received, in particular from The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye). In 2021, The Weeknd called out the Recording Academy after his hit\u00a0After Hours<\/em>\u00a0album was snubbed from the album of the year category \u2014\u00a0After Hours<\/em>\u00a0held the No. 1 spot<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0Billboard 200\u00a0chart for more than three weeks \u2014 as was his hit single \u201cBlinding Lights\u201d for record of the year.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe\u00a0Grammys\u00a0remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency\u2026\u201d he\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0at the time. <\/p>\n

\n\tTensions continued to escalate, however, when The Weeknd revealed on social media<\/a> that he was planning his Grammy performance \u201cfor weeks\u201d before learning he received zero nominations. \u201cCollaboratively planning a performance for weeks to not being invited? In my opinion zero nominations = you\u2019re not invited!\u201d The Weeknd\u00a0tweeted.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I took on this role back in 2020, I wanted the organization to change and modernize so we could be better and serve this dynamic and global music community,\u201d Mason jr. during Sunday night\u2019s Grammys. \u201cBut my early days were not exactly straightforward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Academy faced some real criticism from many in our music community. Some artists were pretty vocal with their complaints. I remember waking up to the headlines that the Weeknd called out the Academy for a lack of transparency in our awards. He went so far as to announce he was boycotting the Grammys. That made for some interesting reading over breakfast,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n

\n\tMason jr. went on to say of The Weeknd, \u201cCriticism is OK. I heard him. I felt his conviction.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Recording Academy CEO then explained how the organization has become \u201cdedicated to the well-being of all music makers, and one that reflects the entire music community for now and for future generations.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo over the past few years, we\u2019ve listened, we\u2019ve acted, and we\u2019ve changed,\u201d he said. He noted that the Recording Academy has since launched initiatives like the Black Music Collective, Women in the Mix and Academy Proud. He also mentioned how they added more than 3,000 women voting members and the grand electorate is \u201cnow younger\u201d and \u201cnearly 40 percent people of color\u201d and 66 percent new members.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s still work to be done, but I firmly believe we\u2019re on the right path,\u201d he added. \u201cAs we\u2019ve seen tonight, music is a powerful force for good. It heals us, it unites us, and we need that in this city right now. With that in mind, on a truly special night, what better way to bring us together than this next artist?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMason jr. then announced that The Weeknd was making his return to the stage to perform and that he has \u201cseen the work that the Academy has put in.\u201d The Weeknd then performed his song \u201cTimeless\u201d alongside Playboi Carti. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe performance comes amid the singer recently releasing his new studio album,\u00a0Hurry Up Tomorrow<\/em>\u00a0via\u00a0XO \/ Republic Records. The album\u00a0<\/em>serves as the final chapter of his trilogy series<\/a> following\u00a0After Hours<\/em>\u00a0(2020)\u00a0and\u00a0Dawn FM<\/em>\u00a0(2022). The artist will also kick off a stadium tour\u00a0across North America\u00a0on May 9 in Phoenix.<\/p>\n
