Recording of the as-yet-unnamed LP wr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed the night before, so the songs are still fresh \u2014 almost too fresh \u2014 in the bandmembers\u2019 minds. Before entering, I saw a friend of the band walk out in tears. \u201cIt\u2019s intense,\u201d she warned me.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-267774\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<p> #content_block-267716,  #content_block-267716 blockquote.pull_quote, #content_block-267716 .img_caption .caption {\n   color: #ffffff;\n }\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-267716\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Formed in 2017 by brothers Ra\u00fal and Gerardo Ponce (drums and guitar, respectively) and quickly expanding to include second guitarist J\u00e9ronimo Garc\u00eda, bassist Andr\u00e9s Lupone, and singer\/saxophonist Jon\u00e1s Derb\u00e9z \u2014 the CDMX-based five-piece started out as something of a metal band but quickly developed a language based on collective, repetitive improvisation. This led them to their first EP, <i>Cay\u00f3 de su Gloria el Diablo<\/i> (The Devil Fell from Glory), a tryptic in which Derb\u00e9z delivers free-form, spoken-word poetry over boiling seas of krautrock psychedelia. After our impromptu listening session, we move to the roof of the building and are joined by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#edcad1\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rojas__seb\/\">Sebasti\u00e1n Rojas<\/a>, a close friend of Diles who produced the album we\u2019re listening to today. The band pour celebratory drinks and tell fast Spanish jokes I half understand. They regale me with stories about the notorious antics of Argentine rock legend Charlie Garcia, the inspiration for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#edcad1\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VCfFCFkVSss&amp;pp=ygUYYWxtb3N0IGZhbW91cyBwb29sIHNjZW5l\">Russell Hammond\u2019s epic pool dive in <i>Almost Famous<\/i><\/a>. I read that when you first thought of the name, none of you read the story, but everyone\u2019s read it now. What did the name mean to you then, and what does it mean to you now?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Andr\u00e9s Lupone:<\/b> It\u2019s really personal. For me, it feels like the experience of living here in this country because this is the country of a lot of murder and killing. Whether it\u2019s the Aztecs or the government killing students, which still happens, it\u2019s a reality. I feel that sentence [(\u201cDiles que no me maten\u201d)] still translates today.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Jon\u00e1s Derb\u00e9z:<\/b> He\u2019s just writing as a normal guy from a little town. Then, suddenly, people in the city are reading [his work], and they think it\u2019s magical, but it\u2019s actually just the perception of the way [the characters] speak, the mixing of the regional language [(an interpretation of the Aztec language Nahuatl)] with Spanish, so it sometimes doesn\u2019t make sense, which brings magic to the writing. Can you describe how a typical improv session begins, and where it goes from there?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>JD:<\/b> When we improvise alone after too many days of not rehearsing, a lot of our feelings are communicated with each other. That\u2019s what we did at the beginning to understand each other. When we started doing it live, it was to fit the stage and the crowd. When we play a house show, we improvise very differently when we play a crowded show with people screaming. Now it\u2019s getting more and more similar; people are paying more attention to our music, so we dare more to play quiet and low.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>So when you play live, do you mainly improvise, or do you play the songs through?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Gerardo Ponce:<\/b> Both, actually. We make other versions of our songs, depending on the stage, depending on our mood. While we play, we pick the next song depending on how we\u2019re feeling in the moment. We don\u2019t have a set list.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Ra\u00fal Ponce:<\/b> We usually talk [before the show] and say what songs we definitely want to play that night, and then we start improvising. We were learning how to play together, so we were playing the same chords, and that\u2019s how we learned to communicate with each other.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>AL:<\/b> Maybe krautrock has been a constant thing because it\u2019s a language we all understand, that we can communicate with.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>Sebasti\u00e1n Rojas:<\/b> There was one song we [recorded] was important for me. All the other songs are very composed, all overdubs and arranging. That\u2019s the only song we recorded live, completely improvised. Whether the song comes out on the album, I don\u2019t really care. But at that moment, you guys really connected. We were struggling with the process at the beginning, but everything started to work from there. It was as if it was a ritual you guys needed to get things going. That\u2019s the beauty of that kind of music: It doesn\u2019t require a cerebral thing in order to create a beautiful connection between musicians. It was something that needed to be done, and that you guys will probably do forever. Andr\u00e9s, you said you were going for a goth Duke Ellington vibe on that one. Can you expand on that?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>AL:<\/b> I was trying to make a Duke Ellington-type song on my computer, but it ended up really dark because I picked the lower-register saxophones, the baritone and tenor. We called Jon\u00e1s\u2019s father <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#edcad1\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alainderbez\/\">Alain<\/a>, who\u2019s a really accomplished and amazing musician and has been improvising for years, to play the tenor sax, but the tenor sax wasn\u2019t working, so we were like, \u201cFuck it, let\u2019s raise it an octave.\u201d Because of that little detail, it sounds like klezmer. Just do what you do.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>JD:<\/b> For me, that one sounds like a funeral march. There\u2019s a big tradition of music of this kind, mije music, in Oaxaca. [The song] reminds me of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#edcad1\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=trepYyCsGfU&amp;pp=ygUQZGlvcyBudW5jYSBtdWVyZQ%3D%3D\">Dios nunca muere<\/a>,\u201d a classic mije song that\u2019s very beautiful. For me, this was like that but with improvisation. It\u2019s like life rising up from the death march.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>On another song you played me, \u201cNo me est\u00e1 rompiendo\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s not breaking me \u2014 is repeated over and over. Jon\u00e1s, what does that lyric mean to you.<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>JD:<\/b> It was about repeating \u201cThis is not going to break me\u201d in a way that it sounds like it had completely broken me down. I say, \u201cEven if I am completely broken, this is not gonna break me down.\u201d The whole album is a little bit like that for me. The bands that I like are making music out of pure necessity. Every month, something is happening that\u2019s really powerful. Even if you don\u2019t like the band or the kind of music, you can tell it\u2019s coming from a really specific and intimate place.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>AL:<\/b> It\u2019s a really strong scene. Of course, every city has its scene and its local bands, but here, the scene is really spiritual. People are really devoted to going to shows and supporting the music, but also having an ongoing conversation with all of the music that bands are releasing. We\u2019re all answering one another. It\u2019s a really special time to be a musician in Mexico City. It\u2019s not like all the hardcore punk bands are gathering with each other. You can be best friends with a dream pop band if you\u2019re playing death metal and it won\u2019t matter because we\u2019re in the same spiritual place.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>The show lineups that come from that must be really interesting.<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>SR:<\/b> Every time. We like [to play shows in] abandoned places.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>What\u2019s the best abandoned place you\u2019ve played?<\/b>\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>JD:<\/b> It was in Tlatelolco, this huge project not far from here.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>SR:<\/b> It\u2019s a conglomerate of 200 buildings made for [low-income housing], but it\u2019s really beautiful.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            <b>JD:<\/b> It\u2019s kind of abandoned, but it\u2019s recovering a bit, and they have a lot of public spaces, so a friend of ours did all the paperwork with the government so we could play there for free. We announced that we were gonna play in this garden the morning of the show, and a lot of people came.
