Credit: Oklahoma State University, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nd\/4.0\/\">CC BY-ND<\/a><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Generative artificial intelligence tools can help design students by making hard tasks easier, cutting down on stress, and allowing the students more time to explore innovative ideas, according to new research I published with my colleagues in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/14780771241254637\" target=\"_blank\">International Journal of Architectural Computing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I study how <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=PCkTWu0AAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">people think about design and use technology<\/a>, and my research focuses <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tilanka.org\" target=\"_blank\">on how tools such as AI<\/a> can help make the design process more efficient and creative.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_it_matters\"><\/span>Why it matters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our study found that AI design tools didn&#8217;t just make the designs better\u2014they also made the process easier and less stressful for students.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine trying to come up with a cool idea in response to a design assignment, but it&#8217;s hard to picture it in your head. These tools step in and quickly show what your idea could look like, so you can focus on being creative instead of worrying about little details. This made it easier for students to brainstorm and come up with new ideas. The AI tools also made more design variations by introducing new and unexpected details, such as natural shapes and textures.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_we_did_our_work\"><\/span>How we did our work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>My colleagues and I worked with 40 design students and split them into two groups.<\/p>\n<p>One group used AI to help design urban furniture, such as benches and seating for public spaces, while the other group didn&#8217;t use AI. The AI tool created pictures of the first group&#8217;s design ideas from simple text de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ions. This time, neither group was allowed to use AI. We wanted to see whether the first task helped them learn how to develop a design concept.<\/p>\n<p>                                                                                                        <!-- TechX - News - In-article --><\/p>\n<p>My colleagues and I evaluated the students&#8217; creativity on three criteria: the novelty of their ideas, the effectiveness of their designs in solving the problem, and the level of detail and completeness in their work. We also wanted to see how hard the tasks felt for them, so we measured something called <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/cognitive-load\" target=\"_blank\">cognitive load<\/a> using a well-known tool called the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/api\/citations\/20000021488\/downloads\/20000021488.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">NASA task load index<\/a>.
