The country is also suffering from a severe lack of local investors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings emerged in the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techleap.nl\/impact\/state-of-dutch-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of Dutch Tech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report by Techleap, a non-profit that supports startups and scaleups in the Netherlands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report raises concerns about the nation\u2019s funding landscape. In 2024, only 104 startups raised over \u20ac100,000 \u2014 a 23% decline over the previous year. The number of deals, meanwhile, dropped by 20%.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<p class=\"ica-text__title\">Webinar: Nurturing Scaleup Success<\/p>\n<p>Join us on 18 February for a discussion on the vital role of ecosystems in nurturing startups and scaleups and fostering a dynamic entrepreneurial landscape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myrthe Hooijman, Techleap\u2019s director of ecosystem change and governmental affairs, said the startup struggles were a \u201cworrying signal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need startups to build scaleups that can grow to unicorns,\u201d Hooijman told TNW. \u201cThe decline potentially weakens our future potential. We must accelerate the transition from research to ventures, and learn from expert ecosystems, together with addressing the need to expand access to early-stage capital.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dutch_techs_funding_fortunes\"><\/span><b>Dutch tech\u2019s funding fortunes<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid the gloom, the report also exposed positive signs for Dutch tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collectively, the sector raised \u20ac3.1bn in venture capital during the past year \u2014 a 47% increase over 2023. The country\u2019s VC market remains the fourth-largest in Europe, behind the UK, Germany, and France.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dutch deep tech has been a big target for the funding. The sector attracted \u20ac1.1bn last year and now accounts for 35% of the ecosystem. Techleap credits the success to government initiatives such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainport Eindhoven<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Netherlands also raised two new unicorns in 2024: Mews and DataSnipper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DataSnipper, an automation platform for audit and finance teams, reached the milestone $1bn (\u20ac965mn) valuation in February after raising $100mn ($97mn) in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Series<\/a> B round. The company\u2019s CEO will share her story at this year\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNW Conference<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mews, a hospitality management scaleup based at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNW City<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, passed the landmark a month later. The company hit a valuation of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.2bn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u20ac1.1bn) after securing $110mn (\u20ac101mn).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the Dutch scaleup ratio has risen from 13% to 21.5% over the past five years. However, this growth is still trails the European average (23%) \u2014 and lags way behind the US (54%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dutch\u00a0investors have also slowed down. In 2024 domestic investment plummeted from 61% to just 15%.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hooijman urged them to expand their spending in growth phases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to continue our work to unlock the late-stage capital through institutional investors,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Alongside new funding streams, Techleap is pushing for improved access to tech talent.
