So difficult, that only 0.1% of people today can identify them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to iProov, a British biometric authentication firm. The company tested the public\u2019s AI detective skills by showing 2,000 UK and US consumers a collection of both genuine and synthetic content.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the budding sleuths overwhelmingly failed in their investigations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A woeful 99.9% of them couldn\u2019t distinguish between the real and the deepfake. You\u2019re not the only one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In iProov\u2019s study, over 60% of the participants were confident in their AI detection skills \u2014 regardless of the accuracy of their guesses. The fraudsters also sent her footage of an AI-generated TV anchor revealing the Hollywood star\u2019s \u201cexclusive relationship with one special individual\u2026 who goes by the name of Anne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poor Anne was roundly mocked for her naivety, but she\u2019s far from alone in falling for a deepfake.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Deepfakes_on_the_rise\"><\/span>Deepfakes on the rise<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Last year, a deepfake attack h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened every five minutes, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onfido.com\/press-release\/deepfake-attacks-strike-every-five-minutes\/#:~:text=The%20findings%20reveal%20a%20deepfake,preventing%20fraud%20and%20financial%20crime.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0ID verification firm Onfido.<\/p>\n<p>The content is frequently weaponised for fraud. A recent study <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.signicat.com\/the-battle-against-ai-driven-identity-fraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimated<\/a> that AI drives almost half (43%) of all fraud attempts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Bud, the founder and CEO of iProov, attributes the escalation to three converging trends:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rapid evolution of\u00a0 AI and its ability to produce realistic deepfakes<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The growth of Crime-as-a-Service (CaaS) networks that offer cheaper access to sophisticated, purpose-built, attack technologies<\/li>\n<li>The vulnerability of\u00a0 traditional ID verification practices<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bud also pointed to the lower barriers of entry to deepfakes. Attackers have progressed from simple \u201ccheapfakes\u201d to powerful tools that create convincing synthetic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeepfaking has become commoditised,\u201d Bud told TNW via email. \u201cThe tools to create deepfake content are widely accessible, very affordable, and produce results undetectable to the human eye. It\u2019s creating a perfect storm of cybercrime, as most organisations lack adequate defences to counter these attacks.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTraditional solutions and manual processes like video identification simply can\u2019t keep up.
