Her advocacy for healthcare and living wages for musicians was something I\u2019ve heard over the past seven years I\u2019ve spent interviewing musicians, whether signed to indie or major labels. As record labels and the music industry rake in record profits year after year, consistent financial support or any other kind of stability has virtually vanished to the point that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/new-york-dolls-david-johansen-diagnosed-with-stage-4-cancer-crowdfunding-treatment\/\">artists of<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/indigo-de-souza-launches-fundraiser-to-recover-from-hurricane-helene-damage\/\">all stripes<\/a> faced with any significant financial burden are forced to start Patreons just to make ends meet. So when Chappell stood up and demanded change \u2014 including a place to start \u2014 I thought to myself, <i>Finally, a conversation can begin on bringing directive and specific change to the industry<\/i>.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            Unfortunately, that momentum has been derailed, and I\u2019m not just referring to <i>that<\/i> op-ed, though it\u2019s a huge part of it. The day after the Grammys, professor and former major label music exec Jeff Rabhan published a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/music-news\/chappell-roan-grammys-speech-misguided-1236128051\/\">column<\/a> in <i>The Hollywood Reporter<\/i> playing aggressive defence for the labels, insisting in a wildly condescending tone that the responsibility, actually, lies with artists like Chappell Roan. He challenged her to \u201cdo something about it rather than just talk about,\u201d claiming she\u2019s no longer a \u201cscrappy\u201d artist fighting on the fringes but part of the establishment. Roan\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chappell-roan-responds-criticism-grammys-speech-1235895514\/\">response<\/a> rightfully called him out, but she also shared she would be donating $25K to support uninsured artists, challenging him to do the same. (He declined.) And now, other musicians like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2025-02-09\/charli-xcx-noah-kahan-pledge-to-match-chappell-roans-25-000-for-artists-healthcare\">Charli xcx and Noah Kahan have joined the cause<\/a>, pledging $25K each, all in the name of \u201cputting their money where their mouth is.\u201d \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-267943\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CHAPPELL ROAN Wins BEST NEW ARTIST | 2025 GRAMMYs\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rx86h_KXk48?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-267940\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Their generosity is bittersweet. While it\u2019s true smaller artists will benefit from these donations, I can\u2019t help but think they\u2019re ultimately misguided and misplaced. The conversation\u2019s now gotten twisted, something Rahban surely wanted to happen: Chappell\u2019s laser-pointed critique of holding labels and the most powerful entities of the music industry accountable has fractured into a discourse of bad and ultimately unsustainable panaceas that don\u2019t even address the original issue.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Let\u2019s be clear here: the problem was never that bigger artists weren\u2019t supporting smaller artists enough. The problem is that <i>labels<\/i> aren\u2019t supporting their artists enough, period. Labels still need to step up and fix their part in the collapsing system \u2014 and to suggest artists themselves become the solution encapsulates pretty much everything that\u2019s wrong and dangerous about the U.S.\u2019s failing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> infrastructure.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            In 2024, according to <i><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/record-label-market-share-year-end-2024-republic-interscope-warner\/\">Billboard<\/a><\/i>, Chappell Roan\u2019s label Island Records quadrupled its market share from 0.62% in 2023 to 2.49%, while other labels like Interscope and Warner also had \u201cbig years.\u201d RIAA reported that the recorded music industry as a whole <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/riaa.medium.com\/music-keeps-the-groove-in-the-first-half-of-2024-8844d6c9949d\">made $8.7 billion in revenue<\/a> in the first-half of 2024 alone. While that\u2019s not a breakdown of what individual record labels made, it\u2019s safe to say major labels are doing completely fine when it comes to making record-level profit \u2014 and likely far, far exceeding whatever its most successful artists are taking home. \n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-267942\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>The problem was never that bigger artists weren\u2019t supporting smaller artists enough. The problem is that labels aren\u2019t supporting their artists enough, period.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-267941\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            With all that money on the table, in what world does it make sense for artists to be the one to pick up the slack? Rabhan argues that this is just \u201chow the industry works,\u201d record labels are \u201cbusinesses, not charities\u201d and their contracts are \u201cloans\u201d not a \u201csalary\u201d \u2014 familiar sentiments that benefit from the status quo. But then Rahban lists items that record labels <i>do<\/i> cover with their contracts: \u201crecording costs, marketing, distribution and \u2014 if negotiated \u2014 tour support.\u201d In that context, the exclusion of healthcare options seems more outrageous, not less.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            To use Rahban\u2019s words, if record labels are taking the risk to invest in the product, wouldn\u2019t it make sense that the product\u2019s well-being and health be part and parcel of that negotiation? Perhaps the only thing Rahban got right is that artists need to unionize \u2014 the actual first step to bringing about real change in the music industry.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Both Rabhan\u2019s column and pop star donations are different kinds of distractions from the real issue: creating an actually sustainable financial safety net for musicians on a systemic level. It\u2019s important that as the conversation moves forward, we aren\u2019t distracted by temporary bandaid solutions. Only in late-capitalist America is the idea of asking celebrities to \u201clead by example\u201d more alluring than imagining \u2014 and demanding \u2014 real change. Let\u2019s not force Chappell Roan to become <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TJ2ifmkGGus\">MrBeast<\/a>, using her wealth to change lives while those who bear the most responsibility sit on their hands. She\u2019s issued a call to action.
