<\/div>\n                                                <div>\n                    Jon Jon Briones returns to Ryan Murphy\u2019s eerie, surrealistic world in \u201cRatched,\u201d his prequel series<\/a> about villainous \u201cOne Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest\u201d nurse Mildred Ratched.\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
The eight-episode drama starts in 1947, as the evil Ratched (Sarah Paulson) wheedles her way into a job at a California psychiatric hospital run by Dr. Richard Hanover (Briones) \u2014 who, like Ratched, is hiding horrific secrets of his own.<\/p>\n
Briones, born in the Philippines, appeared in two previous Murphy series on FX: as Ariel Augustus in \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d and as Modesto Cunanan, the father of serial killer Andrew Cunanan, in \u201cAmerican Crime Story.\u201d His long TV resume includes roles on \u201cMonk,\u201d \u201cAll Rise,\u201d \u201cDesignated Survivor\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cBetter Things.\u201d<\/p>\n
Briones, 55, spoke to The Post about his \u201cRatched\u201d role as Hanover.<\/p>\n
Were you given a nutshell description of Hanover going into the project?<\/strong><\/p>\n
Before we started shooting, I was sent the first three episodes. Ryan [Murphy] e-mailed me asking if I wanted to talk about my character and I said, \u201cYes, please,\u201d but it never happened. I don\u2019t know if that was by design, if he didn\u2019t want me to know too much. I remember at the Emmys afterparty for \u201cThe Assassination of Gianni Versace\u201d Ryan said to me, \u201cYou\u2019re going to be very happy with the role you\u2019re playing in \u2018Ratched.\u2019 I wrote you a wonderful character, a brilliant doctor.\u201d\u00a0 When I was reading the scripts, my wife was reading them as well \u2014 she loves to read all my scripts and is a good gauge \u2014 and when I heard her in the silence go \u201cOh my God!\u201d I knew it was good because it\u2019s so hard to shock her.<\/p>\n
So you had no idea where Hanover was headed beyond the first three scripts?<\/strong><\/p>\n
No. First of all it was curious that my [character\u2019s] name is [a very American-sounding] Richard Hanover. I thought, \u201cOK, we\u2019re going that way.\u201d There\u2019s a line in the first episode when Mildred says to me, \u201cExcuse me, doctor, are you of Filipino descent?\u201d so they were acknowledging my culture in this character. That grounded me a little. If Ryan didn\u2019t want to talk about it, I made the decision to trust it and see where it took me. Then there\u2019s that scene with Lenore [Sharon Stone] and Wainwright [Corey Stoll] when it\u2019s mentioned that Hanover is Filipino, so I thought, \u201cOK, you\u2019re here now, this isn\u2019t the time to ask questions \u2014 piece everything together and do your best.\u201d You have to trust Ryan; his vision is so planned. I didn\u2019t want to shake the tree.<\/p>\n
Hanover performs two different types of gory lobotomies on his patients. Did you do any research on that?<\/strong><\/p>\n
Yes, and thank god for YouTube<\/a>. It\u2019s amazing what you can find there. The thing is, no matter how barbaric lobotomies were, they were used widely during the 1940s. You can see the desperation of health workers to try to find something drastic, since the treatment of mental health was becoming a really big problem.<\/p>\n
Describe Hanover for me.<\/strong><\/p>\n
There\u2019s something tragic about him. He\u2019s a brilliant doctor, but his ego gets in the way. I see him as having a God complex, like, \u201cNow I can cure everyone.\u201d He\u2019s a good person, in my opinion, and for him to be all those things to all people, in this world in the 1940s, he basically has chip on his shoulder. He\u2019s trying to make it in a world where people like him are designed to fail. Everything is stacked against him and he made one very big mistake \u2014 and it\u2019s a downhill journey from there. He\u2019s a mess.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s it like to work with Sarah Paulson?<\/strong><\/p>\n
My very first scene on \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d \u2014 I joined them in Episode 3 or 4 \u2014 was a head-on collision with Sarah\u2019s character. That was an amazing day. She\u2019s wonderful and knows her s\u2013t. She very prepared and very professional. She sets the pace on the set. She\u2019s so much fun and a very generous human being.<\/p>\n
