\n\tJust a week ago, the 2025 SAG Awards, which took place after voting for the 2025 Oscars ended, had pundits wondering if precursor wins by Anora<\/em>, Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody meant that they might not be bound for Oscars glory. SAG Awards wins by Conclave<\/em> (best cast), Demi Moore (best actress) and Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet (best actor) led to speculation that Conclave<\/em>, Moore and Chalamet could win big at the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut it turns out the Oscars were on board with Anora<\/em>, Madison and Brody. Sean Baker\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or winner was named best picture; Madison, in a surprise, nabbed best actress over veteran Demi Moore (who numerous pundits predicted would win with her first Oscar nomination after a long career and wins at the SAG Awards, Critics Choice and Golden Globes); and Brody defeated Chalamet.<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditionally, all three films \u2014 Conclave, The Substance<\/em> and A Complete Unknown<\/em> \u2014\u00a0seemingly underperformed Sunday night. Conclave<\/em>, which pundits had speculated could win best picture and some even forecasted possible wins by Ralph Fiennes (best actor) and Isabella Rossellini (best supporting actress), went home with just one award, for best adapted screenplay. The Substance<\/em>, similarly, also won only one award, for best makeup and hairstyling. A Complete Unknown<\/em>, despite its eight nominations, was completely shut out, not winning a single award for which it was nominated. Perhaps subject Bob Dylan made the right move in skipping the ceremony in which his biopic went winless.<\/p>\n

\n\tA Complete Unknown<\/em> had the worst performance of this year\u2019s most-nominated films, but 10-time nominees The Brutalist<\/em> and Wicked<\/em> each won only two awards, the latter only taking home prizes in craft categories, though it had a big moment at the top of the show with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande performing a medley of songs, including Wicked<\/em>\u2018s iconic \u201cDefying Gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter surprising Oscar observers with its four nominations this year, Nosferatu<\/em> also went winless at this year\u2019s ceremony in an unexpected shutout after its strong performance on nominations morning.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther surprises included indie animated film Flow<\/em> triumphing over studio hits Universal\u2019s The Wild Robot<\/em> (which won the studio Annie Award and Critics Choice prize) and Disney\u2019s Inside Out 2<\/em>. Flow<\/em> previously won the best animated feature Golden Globe and indie Annie Award. <\/p>\n

\n\tAnd after Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em>\u2018s Oscars campaign was thrown off course when controversial tweets from star Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n resurfaced, some pundits wondered if the Netflix musical, which landed a leading 13 nominations, could fail to win a single Oscar or if its only win would go to supporting actress hopeful Zoe Salda\u00f1a, who had swept this season\u2019s precursor awards. Instead, Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> performed slightly better than expected, with Salda\u00f1a winning and the film taking best original song for \u201cEl Mal,\u201d which Salda\u00f1a performs in the movie.<\/p>\n

\n\tOther films up for multiple Oscars that went winless on Sunday night include three-time nominee Sing Sing<\/em> and double nominees Nickel Boys<\/em> and The App<\/a>rentice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
