Google last claimed at least 2 trillion in 2016.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\n<p>Google processes more than 5 trillion searches per year. This is the first time Google has publicly shared such a figure since 2016, when the company confirmed it was handling \u201cmore than 2 trillion\u201d queries annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the numbers.<\/strong> Google revealed the new figure in a blog post today, saying it is based on internal Google data:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWe already see more than 5 trillion searches on Google annually.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google added another tidbit in the same blog post: that \u201cthe volume of commercial queries has increased\u201d since the launch of AI Overviews. However, Google didn\u2019t share any data or a percentage to explain how much commercial queries have increased.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Searches per second, minute, day and month.<\/strong> Now that we have an updated figure, we can also estimate how many Google searches there are pretty much down to the second. Here\u2019s a breakdown based on this new Google data point:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Searches per second:<\/strong> 158,548<\/li>\n<li><strong>Searches per minute:<\/strong> 9.5 million.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Searches per hour:<\/strong> 571 million.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Searches per day:<\/strong> 14 billion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Searches per month:<\/strong> 417 billion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Searches per year:<\/strong> More than 5 trillion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Google searches per year, over time.<\/strong> Curious about how the number of Google search queries has grown over time, at least based on what Google self-reported? Here\u2019s a brief recap:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1999: 1 billion<\/strong>. This figure was based on 3 million searches per day, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=G4KfbOt7OYcC&amp;pg=PT112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in August 1999\u00a0by\u00a0John Battelle\u00a0in his book,\u00a0\u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Search-Rewrote-Business-Transformed-Culture\/dp\/1591840880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Search<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>2000: 14 billion<\/strong>.\u00a0This figure was based\u00a0on\u00a018 million searches per day for the first half of 2000 and 60 million for the second half, as reported by\u00a0Battelle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2001\u20132003: 55 billion+<\/strong>. This figure was based on reports by Google for its Zeitgeist in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/zeitgeist2001.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2001<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/zeitgeist2002.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2002<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/zeitgeist2003.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2003<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2004\u20132008: 73 billion.\u00a0<\/strong>This figure was based on Google\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/google-files-for-unusual-2-7-billion-ipo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a>\u00a0it was doing 200 million searches per day in 2004. After that, it said only \u201cbillions\u201d\u00a0in\u00a0Google Zeitgeist for\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/zeitgeist2005.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2005<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en_us\/press\/zeitgeist2007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2007<\/a>. No updates were shared in 2006 or 2008.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2009: 365 billion+<\/strong>.\u00a0A Google blog\u00a0post, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/google-instant-behind-scenes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Instant, behind the scenes<\/a>, said Google was doing more than 1 billion searches per day. No updates for 2010 or 2011)<\/li>\n<li><strong>2012\u20132015: 1.2 trillion<\/strong>.\u00a0This figure is based on a 100-billion-per-month figure Google\u00a0released\u00a0during a special press briefing on search in 2012. Google\u00a0repeated\u00a0this figure in 2015, when expressing it as 3 billion searches per day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2016-2024: 2 trillion+<\/strong>. Google confirmed to Search Engine Land that because it said it handles \u201ctrillions\u201d of searches per year worldwide, the figure could be safely assumed to be 2 trillion or above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2025: 5 trillion+.<\/strong> This figure is based on internal Google data and was reported in Google\u2019s blog post, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/ads-commerce\/ai-personalization-and-the-future-of-shopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI, personalization and the future of shopping<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Since 2016, we\u2019ve known that Google processes \u201cat least 2 trillion\u201d searches per year.
