In the past few months alone, Google launched a chip called <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/research\/google-willow-quantum-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Microsoft unveiled <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/features\/innovation\/microsofts-majorana-1-chip-carves-new-path-for-quantum-computing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majorana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this week, Amazon revealed <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/aws\/quantum-computing-aws-ocelot-chip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocelot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While tech giants are making great strides, these companies are still working in dozens of qubits \u2014 far from the numbers needed for a practical quantum computer. QuantWare, a startup from the Netherlands, could help them unlock millions more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QuantWare claims to have created a 3D chip architecture that offers the fastest route to a 1-million qubit quantum computer \u2014 and plans to sell it to Silicon Valley.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to get to around a million qubits for a quantum computer capable of economically-relevant, world-changing calculations,\u201d said QuantWare\u2019s co-founder and CEO <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthijs Rijlaarsdam. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These would be large, megawatt-scale systems, comparable to today\u2019s AI clusters, he said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qubits, like bits in a regular PC, are the basic units of information in a quantum computer. The more you have, the faster the machine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven Google took five years to double the number of qubits on its chips \u2014 from 50 to 100,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rijlaarsdam. \u201cIf this is the pace of scaling up, we\u2019re not going to get there fast enough.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Solving_the_quantum_qubit_conundrum\"><\/span>Solving the quantum qubit conundrum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest bottlenecks to scaling quantum computers is making room for more qubits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current designs route the electronic signals used to control the qubits to the edge of the chip. But as qubit numbers grow, space runs out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then you\u2019ve got components like amplifiers, filters, and mixers that ensure signals are delivered with the right frequency, amplitude, and noise levels to perform accurate quantum calculations. In today\u2019s quantum computers, each component is housed on a separate chip in a separate metal box \u2014 resulting in quantum computers growing too large too quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QuantWare\u2019s core offering \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertical integration and optimisation, or VIO \u2014 promises to solve quantum\u2019s scaling problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 3D chip architecture replaces edge-based wiring, allowing signals to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> \u201cfrom above,\u201d producing higher qubit densities. VIO also integrates bulky components like amplifiers and filters onto a single quantum processor or \u2018chip\u2019. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In effect, it creates the quantum computing version of an integrated circuit in modern PCs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe provide the fastest path towards scaling towards a million qubit system,\u201d said Rijlaarsdam. The startup makes its own quantum chips and amplifiers, which are already found in quantum computers in 20 countries. It will use VIO to rapidly scale its processors. But it will also offer the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> to companies building their own quantum machines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Big_Tech_big_customers\"><\/span>Big Tech, big customers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As tech giants compete in the race to a viable quantum computer, QuantWare is positioning itself to cash in. The startup aims to become the quantum equivalent of what TSMC is to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le or Microsoft in classical computing \u2014 an enabler, not a competitor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach Big Tech breakthrough reinforces QuantWare\u2019s value proposition,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rijlaarsdam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quantum computing has transformed in recent years from a speculative moonshot into a technology poised to turbo-charge everything from drug discovery to cryptography. Last year, quantum technologies attracted over <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$49bn in public and private <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thequantuminsider.com\/2025\/01\/15\/tqi-2024-annual-report-quantum-industry-faces-challenges-as-transformative-potential-commercialization-beckon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cQuantum computing is less now a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> problem than an engineering problem, and it will quickly become an economic problem: how can we scale as quickly as possible?\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rijlaarsdam.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, QuantWare rais<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ed \u20ac20mn in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Series<\/a> A funding to further develop VIO and build out its chip fabrication facilities. The round was co-led by Invest-NL Deep Tech Fund and Innovation Quarter. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job van der Voort<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder and CEO of Remote, also came on board as an angel investor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If QuantWare\u2019s bet on 3D chip architecture pays off, it could offer a route to the million-qubit milestone needed to get quantum computers that truly change the world.
