\n\tFriends<\/em> actor Stephen Park is looking back at a racist incident he experienced while filming the hit sitcom in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actor, who app<\/a>eared in two episodes of the show \u2014 \u201cThe One with the Chicken Pox\u201d in season two and \u201cThe One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion\u201d in season three \u2014 recalled working on the show during a recent episode of the Pod Meets World <\/em>podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was at the time, I felt it was kind of a toxic environment,\u201d Park said about Friends<\/em>. \u201cJames Hong [known for roles in Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em> and Kung Fu Panda<\/em>, among hundreds of other projects] was the actor who was also on the episode with me, and [the AD] was calling him to the set and you know, essentially saying, you know, \u2018Where the fuck is the Oriental guy? Get the Oriental guy.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Mickey 17 <\/em>actor said he knew \u201cthis is bigger than this show\u201d as \u201cthis isn\u2019t the first time that this happened, you know, but this is the environment where this is business as usual in Hollywood in 1997, I guess it was. And nobody felt the need to correct this or say anything about it. So this is normal behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter, an angry Park said he wanted to speak out about his experience. \u201cWhen I called the Screen Actors Guild after that happened, the person I spoke with recommended I write an article to the\u00a0L.A. Times<\/em>,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI started writing this mission statement and I sent it to the\u00a0L.A. Times<\/em>. They sent a couple of reporters and interviewed me, and then they never printed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s when Park decided to take it upon himself to get his open letter out (which can still be found online<\/a>) and sent his \u201cmission statement out to who was on my email list.\u201d And while he claimed \u201cit went viral before \u2018viral\u2019 was even a word,\u201d the whole experience impacted his perspective on the industry.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had become so race-conscious and so angry that I was looking at everything through the lens of race,\u201d the Asteroid City <\/em>actor explained. \u201cI felt like there was no freedom. I didn\u2019t feel any freedom. So, I didn\u2019t have any idea what I was going to do, but I just decided to drop out. I told everybody, \u2018I\u2019m not acting anymore.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing a year hiatus, he had a \u201cslow climb back into the business\u201d after being asked to audition for a role. Park has appeared in dozens of projects throughout his career, including Ghosted<\/em>, The Mindy Project<\/em> and Law & Order<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tFriend<\/em>s, which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry (who died in 2023).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
