The plugg music he was making before 2022 was standard issue in a scene saturated by its woozy melodies and thumping beats. By comparison, ambient trap was fresher, its sonics built on unpredictable drum patterns and cinematic synths. At 22, the artist born Roy Ngamy Noutchang s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ped away anything that wasn\u2019t Xang \u2014 school, work, old ways of thinking \u2014  and committed to music with total dedication. \u201cI stopped doing everything I was trained to do. It was like, <i>Damn, all I have is music.<\/i>\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            A first-generation American born to Cameroonian parents, Xang grew up on Michael Jackson and 50 Cent. But he didn\u2019t start taking music seriously until he graduated from high school and theo, a producer and fellow Maryland-based artist, introduced him to ambient trap. \u201cHe opened my eyes to the ambient scene,\u201d Xang says, \u201cHe showed me that it\u2019s a world of underground rap out there.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-268793\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Xang - &quot;How I&#039;m Comin&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8yAryEKghRI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('268793');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-268788\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            A founder of the loose collective DPM (Deep and Powerful Music), theo helped form the germ of ambient trap\u2019s sound. The subgenre is occasionally conflated with cloud rap, but it\u2019s more than just another iteration of the Clams Casino\/Friendzone sonic palette \u2014 i.e., pillowy, distorted samples of artists like Gigi Masin and Imogen Heap evoking endless greener pastures \u2014 ambient trap became something else thanks in part to theo\u2019s keen ear. Over the phone, theo tells me he, \u201cwas combining nineties and two thousands ambient with plugg and stuff like that.\u201d\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            DPM\u2019s membership keeps its output dynamic. fk\u2019s production, for example, leans more to the 808 Mafia end of the spectrum, while westly\u2019s beats bring Detroit deep techno energy to plugg\u2019s thumping arena. For much of the past two years, Xang has made what he calls \u201cheadphone music\u201d \u2014 songs that skip and jump like early Warp glitch, welding hazy melodies to cyberpunk military drum patterns (DPM\u2019s production has inspired ivvys and #stepTeam, another crew that\u2019s making waves).\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-268789\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Every bass frequency tickles new hairs deep within your inner ear; Xang\u2019s voice, like Young Nudy guzzling gallons of syrup, is a mostly indecipherable fog, taking the philosophy of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_new\" href=\"https:\/\/crackmagazine.net\/article\/profiles\/veeze-issue-155-interview\/\">I\u2019m not rapping, I\u2019m just talking<\/a>\u201d to a level occupied by snake handlers on Ativan. It\u2019s the kind of flow that, if Carti unlocked it for <i>I AM MUSIC<\/i>, would hold fans down for another five years.\n          <\/p>\n<p>\n            Of course, Xang\u2019s newfound commitment to music meant he was done staying still. 2023 EPs <i>guerilla tactics<\/i> and <i>the angels floss their teeth with my bones<\/i>, a five-track freakout with ian collaborator .cutspace, paved the way for moments that scooted up more closely to trap, like Moh Baretta collab <i>Exile<\/i>. \u201cOver the years [ambient trap] turned into something you can go on a run to, [something] you can dance to,\u201d Xang tells me. In that regard he\u2019s kept pace, even excelled: The mutant house of \u201cVogue 2\u201d is limber and ready for the club, while \u201cNo Problem\u201d gives cathartic pop-punk melodies a grungier, blown-out edge.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-268794\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/playlists\/1980715616&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-size: 10px; color: #cccccc;line-break: anywhere;word-break: normal;overflow: hidden;white-space: nowrap;text-overflow: ellipsis; font-family: Interstate,Lucida Grande,Lucida Sans Unicode,Lucida Sans,Garuda,Verdana,Tahoma,sans-serif;font-weight: 100;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/xxhang\" title=\"xang\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #cccccc; text-decoration: none;\">xang<\/a> \u00b7 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/xxhang\/sets\/womb\" title=\"WOMB\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #cccccc; text-decoration: none;\">WOMB<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-268790\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>\n            Xang was already finding fresh and cohesive new directions for ambient trap by the time he dropped his excellent mixtape <i>WOMB<\/i> (<i>Watch Over My Body<\/i>) in early March. But he wanted the project\u2019s various energies to be starker, more undeniable. \u201cI wanted to show people that I\u2019m not a one trick pony,\u201d he says. \u201cI can make ambient songs in five minutes if I wanted to, [but] that&#8217;s not why I got in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>.\u201d His desire to leave it all on the table makes <i>WOMB<\/i> one of 2025\u2019s most sonically vibrant projects, boasting a broad stylistic range and the skill to tie it all together.\n          <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\n            So the hyper-rhythmic trance revival of \u201cby yourself\u201d somehow sounds perfectly at home next to \u201cpaid,\u201d an abandoned Brutalist structure with \u2013 literally, put on your headphones \u2013 wolves and sheep roaming its halls. A few overt nods to hip-hop\u2019s past situates <i>WOMB<\/i> as part of a wider lineage: The excerpt of Lenny Williams\u2019 \u201c\u2018Cause I Love You\u201d on \u201cpaid,\u201d a melody most famously sampled on \u201cCelebrity Overnight\u201d by Twista, ties together nicely with the epileptic Zaytoven melodies of \u201ccake got baked.\u201d Most of the time, <i>WOMB<\/i> sounds closer to an avant-garde club project than any prevailing notion of underground hip-hop, like your SoundCloud feed got invaded by Andy Stott.\n          <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-268792\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Xang - Paid (Official Music Video) dir. His vocals on his earlier work deliberately served more as a texture than lyric instrument. \u201cI didn&#8217;t care enough to even try to pronounce the words,\u201d Xang says. \u201cIt was just how I&#8217;m feeling it right now.\u201d On <i>WOMB<\/i>, a more fully formed picture emerges, of Xang as a hustler ready for violence while tortured by it, his trigger finger as itchy as it is sore. Whether you can understand what Xang is saying or not, there\u2019s a passion beneath his monotone drawl, the raw feeling of a human being vulnerable to the same flaws and setbacks as anyone else. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago, I told myself I was done rapping,\u201d Xang admits. The cheerfulness in his voice disappears for the first time in our call. \u201cI&#8217;ve been living on my own since I was 19. I was thinking, could I be doing more if I wasn&#8217;t rapping?\u201d But he came back from the brink to create <i>WOMB<\/i>, with collaborative tapes with Chinapoet, .cutspace, and theo also in the works.
