It harnesses the wind that hits its surface to propel the ship.<\/p>\n<p>However, its internal fans set it apart. They accelerate the air passing through it to speed up the ship, Harrop explained.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Americas_Cup_and_Formula_1\"><\/span>America&#8217;s Cup and Formula 1<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;There was a gap in the market for a new type of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>,&#8221; said Thompson, a sailing enthusiast. &#8220;One that was able to produce a lot of thrust but from a much smaller, much more compact size.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2025\/aerodynamics-used-in-a.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2025\/aerodynamics-used-in-a.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Aerodynamics used in America's Cup and Formula 1 were applied in the design of the sail.\">\n<figure class=\"article-img text-center\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2025\/aerodynamics-used-in-a.jpg\" alt=\"Aerodynamics used in America's Cup and Formula 1 were applied in the design of the sail\" title=\"Aerodynamics used in America's Cup and Formula 1 were applied in the design of the sail.\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-left text-darken text-truncate text-low-up mt-3\">\n                Aerodynamics used in America&#8217;s Cup and Formula 1 were <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lied in the design of the sail.<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since it was set up three years ago, GT Wings has attracted funding from private investors as well as the British government, which has invested \u00a33.7 million ($4.8 million) as part of its maritime decarbonization program.<\/p>\n<p>It now has nine employees, including those who have taken part in the America&#8217;s Cup, a high-level sailing competition, and those from the Formula 1 racing world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aerodynamics and all the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> behind the America&#8217;s Cup really plays a big part in what we&#8217;re doing,&#8221; Thompson said, adding the same was true for motor sports and Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>But building the project within 12 months was a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>It required modifying the ship&#8217;s structure using an additional nine tonnes of steel, installing over 7.5 kilometers (4 and a half miles) of electric cables and finding space for the AirWing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a very small footprint on the bow of the ship to install the wing, where it wouldn&#8217;t impact on the ship&#8217;s operation,&#8221; said Simon Merritt from Carisbrooke Shipping, which owns a fleet of vessels including the cargo ship, Vectis Progress.<\/p>\n<p>To overcome the lack of visibility, the company had to fit navigational cameras, a radar system on the bow and navigation lights, Merritt explained, squinting his eyes in the winter sun.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2025\/the-airwing-works-like.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2025\/the-airwing-works-like.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"The AirWing works like a vertical aeroplane wing.
