\n\tSaw XI<\/em> app<\/a>ears to be struggling to survive.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has learned \u201czero progress\u201d has been made on the next installment since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe haven\u2019t heard anything since May,\u201d says Saw XI<\/em> screenwriter Melton, who has been involved with the franchise since 2007\u2019s Saw IV<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There\u2019s higher-level things at play.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn late December 2023, Lionsgate announced that franchise mainstay Kevin Greutert was attached to direct Saw XI <\/em>for a September 2024 release, but the studio ultimately delayed it by a year to Sept. 26, 2025. Greutert helmed Saw X<\/em>, which revitalized the franchise when it hit theaters in September 2023 and collected $112 million at the global box office. It is unclear if he is still involved in Saw XI<\/em>, and Lionsgate did not respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

\n\tMelton points out that Saw X<\/em> did well, and that the team has a concept that they\u2019re proud of for the next movie. They intended to tackle a timely topic, although plot details have not yet been shared publicly. The writer likens the new project\u2019s premise to the timeliness of 2009 release Saw VI<\/em>, in which health insurance executives are targeted by John Kramer, aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell). This topic captured renewed attention earlier this year with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSaw XI <\/em>may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that,\u201d says Melton. \u201cIt taps into the same themes of Saw VI<\/em>, where you\u2019re a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can\u2019t do anything, and John Kramer\u2019s going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdds the writer about Saw XI<\/em>, \u201cThe reason it\u2019s held up is just, there\u2019s inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can\u2019t quite get on the same page.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs far as the previous films, Melton recalls that critics reacted favorably to Saw VI,<\/em> but that the feature was hurt at the box office by Paranormal Activity<\/em> hitting theaters a month prior. \u201cSaw VI <\/em>was the one that got cut in half because of Paranormal Activity<\/em>, which was odd because it was the best-reviewed one [at the time],\u201d he says. \u201cIt was the first one that really resonated with a lot of critics because it was about health care. The production was really easy, though, even though the Saw<\/em> movies<\/a> were made every year, which is hard to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMark Burg, a longtime producer on the Saw<\/em> franchise that launched with director James Wan\u2019s 2004 original, points out to THR<\/em> that he oversaw not only Saw VI <\/em>but also 2002\u2019s similarly themed John Q.<\/em> That Denzel Washington thriller focuses on a father who resorts to crime after he can\u2019t pay his son\u2019s health bills. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJigsaw goes after somebody who won\u2019t provide insurance for him,\u201d Burg says of Saw VI<\/em>. \u201cSo I guess I\u2019m two for two.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAs it turns out, Melton actually went to college with slain United Healthcare CEO Thompson at the University of Iowa. \u201cWe were at Iowa at the same time, so we graduated the same year in 1997,\u201d recalls the writer, who notes that they knew each other but weren\u2019t close friends. \u201cI can tell you Brian was pretty normal at school. He drank Bud Light and was a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
