The prosecution cites a toxic relationship between O\u2019Keefe and his girlfriend, leading to an alleged drunk and angry Read hitting her boyfriend with her car and leaving him to die in a snowstorm after a night of heavy drinking at two bars.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read | Official Trailer | ID\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ja6-xWFYx68?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRead\u2019s defense team, however, claims she is innocent and was framed to protect other Boston police officers involved in a confrontation with O\u2019Keefe inside a home at 34 Fairview Road in Canton, Massachusetts, before he was dragged outside to die from hypothermia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHere are five takeaways from the docuseries on a murder case and trial that has earned national attention, with quotes from director Terry Dunn Meurer in conversation with <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. <em>A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read,<\/em>\u00a0produced by Unsolved Productions for Investigation Discovery,\u00a0airs on ID and streams on Max\u00a0over three nights starting Monday at 9 p.m., with a one-hour finale on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Karen_Reads_legal_team_reveals_mysterious_tip_that_blew_the_murder_case_wide_open\"><\/span>\n\t\tKaren Read\u2019s legal team reveals mysterious tip that blew the murder case wide open\t<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA tip from a \u201cMike\u201d that was called into Read\u2019s attorney David\u00a0Yannetti ultimately steered the defense to claiming fellow Boston cops allegedly killed O\u2019Keefe and framed her for the crime. <strong>\u201c<\/strong>He wasn\u2019t a witness. But that tip was invaluable. It sent us in a different direction very early on in this investigation,\u201d Yannetti recalls in the ID docuseries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe tipster wasn\u2019t specific, fellow defense attorney Alan Jackson adds, but was helpful. \u201cYou need to look at the folks inside the Albert House. You need to look at the occupants of the house. Something is more than meets the eye,\u201d Jackson said of the home on Fairview Road in Canton, then-owned by Brian Albert, where O\u2019Keefe was discovered dead and buried under a snowdrift in the front yard on Jan. 29, 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWithout that tip, the focus on O\u2019Keefe\u2019s death may have remained on a car accident in a blinding snow blizzard, hampering claims during the first trial that Read\u2019s boyfriend had been killed inside the Fairview Road property and that his body had been dumped out in the snow.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Trooper_Michael_Proctor_the_Mark_Fuhrman_of_the_Karen_Read_trial\"><\/span>\n\t\tIs Trooper Michael Proctor the Mark Fuhrman of the Karen Read trial?\t<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIf the defense claims are true, Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor will be to the Karen Read retrial what LAPD Detective Mark Furhman was to the infamous O.J. Simpson murder trial. Fuhrman was the detective investigating the slayings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman and who was accused by Simpson\u2019s defense team of having planted the bloody glove he claimed to have found behind Simpson\u2019s house\u00a0in Brentwood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tProctor, the lead detective in investigating the death of O\u2019Keefe, admitted during Read\u2019s first trial that he had sent vulgar texts about his main suspect to his friends and supervisors. And the ID docuseries director Terry Dunn Meurer sees parallels between Proctor and Furman. \u201cIt\u2019s an echo of O.J. Very similar. You know, Michael Proctor in our film is Mark Herman in the O.J. case, with accusations of a cover up and conspiracy and planting evidence,\u201d Meurer tells <em>THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tProsecutors used the damaged\u00a0taillight\u00a0on Read\u2019s SUV to claim she was guilty of hitting O\u2019Keefe and causing her boyfriend\u2019s death. But Read\u2019s defense team are captured in the docuseries alleging Proctor, who confiscated her phone and SUV as part of the investigation, took shards from a broken\u00a0taillight\u00a0cover on her car and planted them at the scene as evidence O\u2019Keefe had been murdered outside the home and not inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAttorney Jackson says in the docuseries: \u201cWe believe it\u2019s not just a sloppy investigation. There\u2019s active planting of evidence. Why? Because inside that house, there\u2019s a Boston police officer, Brian Albert. And Proctor knows this family and has known them for decades. The entire policing culture there is deeply, deeply connected to each other. And we believe that leads to \u2018let\u2019s look the other way, let\u2019s call it a favor, let\u2019s do a solid for a buddy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blogger_Aidan_%E2%80%9CTurtleboy%E2%80%9D_Kearney_Journalist_or_social_media_provocateur\"><\/span>\n\t\tBlogger Aidan \u201cTurtleboy\u201d Kearney: Journalist or social media provocateur?\t<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAmong the most passionate supporters of Read outside the courthouse during her first trial was Aidan Kearney, also known as Turtleboy, who argued an innocent woman had been framed for murder. The rub is the controversial blogger has been charged with witness intimidation and possibly faces new charges as Read\u2019s retrial is set to get underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tKearney has pleaded not guilty to the charges and claims he\u2019s a journalist. Prosecutors claim Kearney and his megaphone rants from the courthouse steps helped the defense present a false narrative about a police cover up, and are making jury selection in the coming retrial an uphill battle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s the collateral damage \u2014 this is a very personal opinion \u2014 but the collateral damage that he\u2019s done in terms of the lives of these witnesses, who are just witnesses, as Jennifer McCabe says on the stand, \u2018I\u2019m just a witness,\u2019 it\u2019s really concerning and disturbing,\u201d Meurer tells <em>THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe\u2019s referencing key prosecution witness Jennifer McCabe, whose Google search on how long it takes to die in the cold\u00a0(which she says was done at the request of Read after O\u2019Keefe\u2019s body had been discovered and not earlier, as the defense team claimed) made for a dramatic moment during the first trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBrendan Kane, a longtime friend of O\u2019Keefe who <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears in the docuseries, recalled an im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te change in sentiment among pink-clad supporters of Read outside the courthouse owing to the intervention of Turtleboy and other online bloggers. \u201cThey were booing Johnny\u2019s family as they walked into the courthouse. At first, I had trouble processing that. Why are they doing it?\u201d he recalled asking himself during an interview in the docuseries. Higgins put into evidence texts like Read telling him, \u201cYou\u2019re hot.\u201d He then responded: \u201cAre you serious or messing with me?\u201d To which Read responded: \u201cNo I\u2019m serious,\u201d which was followed by Higgins texting: \u201cFeeling is mutual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor the prosecution, the exchange of texts only weeks before O\u2019Keefe was allegedly murdered, with Read flirting with Higgins, offered a possible motive for why she may allegedly have wanted to end a failing relationship. But the steamy texts also gave the defense team evidence to claim, on the night of the alleged crime, that Higgins and O\u2019Keefe had an argument inside 34 Fairview Road. Or, as attorney Jackson put it in the docuseries, \u201ccreated a very, very clear motive for Brian Higgins to visit harm on John O\u2019Keefe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBehind the scenes, Read says in the docuseries: \u201cIt felt like the walls were closing in during the Higgins text messages. I could feel my parents shrinking. On the stand, Paul conceded he knew little about kinematics, or the geometry of mechanical motion, held no degrees in mathematics or physics, and had only an degree in the administration of justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been dying to know for two and a half years, what was the point of impact on John\u2019s body?\u201d Read questions in the doc series. It didn\u2019t come definitively from Trooper Paul, who appeared flustered on the witness stand, and had to be told by the presiding court judge to speak more slowly and clearly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd the defense brought two of its own accident reconstruction experts to the stand to testify after being hired by the FBI to look at the Read case.
