Page speed improvements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Not long ago, I had a client who was obsessed with page speed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The site\u2019s page speed was excellent, with 100% of its pages passing Core Web Vitals on desktop and more than 95% passing on mobile.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, they still wanted every URL to be rated \u201cgood\u201d for mobile and every page speed test score to be a perfect 100\/100.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Achieving that would have required painstaking hours digging through code and cleaning up things like unused Java<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Script<\/a> to rework how pages loaded.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1508\" height=\"871\" src=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/03\/Brand-with-a-good-CWV-score-on-desktop.png.webp\" alt=\"Brand with a good CWV score on desktop\" class=\"wp-image-453288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/03\/Brand-with-a-good-CWV-score-on-desktop.png.webp 1508w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/03\/Brand-with-a-good-CWV-score-on-desktop-585x338.png.webp 585w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/03\/Brand-with-a-good-CWV-score-on-desktop-800x462.png.webp 800w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/03\/Brand-with-a-good-CWV-score-on-desktop-196x113.png.webp 196w,https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2025\/03\/Brand-with-a-good-CWV-score-on-desktop-768x444.png.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1508px) 100vw, 1508px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear \u2013 page speed is important!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of data shows that improving page speed can boost conversion rates, especially for ecommerce stores.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if a page loads in under two seconds, is interactive quickly, and doesn\u2019t have disruptive layout shifts, a site can gain only minor performance boosts by shaving off additional milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>Once a site meets Core Web Vitals standards, further page speed optimizations have diminishing returns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unless a business handles a high volume of on-page transactions daily, it\u2019s usually better to focus on other areas for improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if your page takes 10 seconds to load, has poor interactivity, and webpage elements move around while users try to click, then this should be a priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if most of your pages pass Core Web Vitals and the user experience is solid, agonizing over page speed makes no sense.<\/p>\n<p>The client in the example above had much bigger priorities, like cleaning up rampant over-indexing or pruning their stockpile of old, outdated content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although this was explained to them, they ignored it, despite efforts to prevent them from wasting time on a dead end.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-increasing-backlink-authority\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Increasing_backlink_authority\"><\/span>2. Increasing backlink authority<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many businesses fixate on backlink authority, seeing it as a silver bullet for rankings while overlooking issues like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Poor keyword targeting.<\/li>\n<li>Content cannibalization.<\/li>\n<li>Weak internal linking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Link building is <strong>not<\/strong> dead. Plenty of studies and anecdotal evidence prove it.<\/p>\n<p>Building link authority can be the missing piece that pushes rankings onto Page 1, especially for new websites or brand-new pages on an existing site.<\/p>\n<p>But if your website\u2019s authority is well established and content ranks the second it\u2019s published, then building links can have diminishing returns.<\/p>\n<p>It can even start to work against a site that:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chases poor-quality link opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Gets overly spammy with anchor text.<\/li>\n<li>Pursues links from places that aren\u2019t relevant to its content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Does that mean you should stop link building altogether?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No! Always take a quality link if you can get it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But depending on a website\u2019s level of authority, more success may come from focusing efforts elsewhere \u2013 such as content strategy, public relations, or conversion rate optimization (CRO).<\/p>\n<p><!-- START INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<p><!-- END INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-css-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-publishing-net-new-content\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Publishing_net-new_content\"><\/span>3. Publishing net-new content<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another client insisted on producing only new content.<\/p>\n<p>Refreshing old articles or removing underperforming pages was off the table.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, the strategy worked, and the website saw gains in nonbranded performance.<\/p>\n<p>However, there was a tipping point \u2013 continuously adding new content eventually led to performance declines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"272\" 552px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Writing only net-new content for years caused internal cannibalization, as multiple articles covered similar topics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Relevant topics also became scarce, leading to content that was only loosely related \u2013 or even unrelated \u2013 to the company\u2019s services.<\/p>\n<p>HubSpot has been in SEO <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> recently for this exact reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When a marketing automation software company writes on topics around business credit cards, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aleydasolis.com\/en\/search-engine-optimization\/hubspot-blog-rankings-drop-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performance starts to move in the wrong does this all mean?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Writing net-new content can not only have diminishing returns but, if done incorrectly, can actually hurt performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it may be more effective to focus on:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refreshing old content.<\/li>\n<li>Improving internal linking.<\/li>\n<li>Promoting existing content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-refreshing-old-content\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Refreshing_old_content\"><\/span>4. Refreshing old content<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I know \u2013 I just said refreshing old content is often better than focusing only on new content.<\/p>\n<p>But stick with me.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no debate: Refreshing old content is both a successful and necessary SEO tactic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Search engines prioritize fresh content, and some of the easiest and most effective wins come from updating existing content to be more accurate and relevant.<\/p>\n<p>We surveyed about 850 enterprise-level marketers and found that updating existing content provided a greater performance lift than creating new content.<\/p>\n<p>It should come as no surprise that the biggest growth comes from content refreshes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As noted in the previous section, creating new content was cited as the largest source of traffic loss between the two strategies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" 1600px\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, even content refreshes have diminishing returns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80\/20 rule, states that roughly 80% of results come from 20% of the inputs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This applies to on-site content \u2013 about 80% of traffic or conversions typically come from just 20% of a website\u2019s pages.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, returns will be much higher when focusing on top-performing pages and gradually decline as you move further down the list.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean you should only focus on the top 20% of your content and ignore the rest?<\/p>\n<p>Absolutely not!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it does help put things into perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While it may be tempting to squeeze more performance out of every article, refreshing low-volume or low-relevance content eventually will not provide value.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s best to leave an article alone or retire it \u2013 and that\u2019s
