Just this week, a coalition from across Europe\u2019s tech industry called for \u201cradical action\u201d from lawmakers to reduce the region\u2019s reliance on foreign-owned digital infrastructure, pushing for homegrown alternatives to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s, AI models, chips and the full gamut of cloud services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evroc aims to capitalize on this momentum. The three-year-old company plans to build data centers and an array of cloud services. At its launch in 2023, Evroc outlined plans to establish eight data centers by 2028. Today, it says it has two co-location facilities in Stockholm and another two in Paris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of second quarter of this year, the company expects to have two additional facilities operational in Frankfurt, with work already underway on its first flagship data centers in Sweden <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterdynamics.com\/en\/news\/evroc-plans-96mw-data-center-outside-cannes-france\/\">and France<\/a>, scheduled for completion in 2026 with AI workloads as a primary focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey [\u2026.] are designed for the energy density required for AI, where racks can consume 20 times what a traditional server rack can,\u201d Evroc CEO and founder <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mattias-%C3%A5str%C3%B6m-05a10a\/\">Mattias \u00c5str\u00f6m<\/a> (pictured above) told TechCrunch. \u201cBoth will be equipped with liquid cooling but will also host compute and storage servers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evroc\u2019s formal launch is slated for later this year, with \u00c5str\u00f6m adding that it is already working with early beta customers in industries requiring a \u201chigh need for sovereignty,\u201d including defense, public sector, health care and financial services. He also hinted at additional data centers coming next year, though the company isn\u2019t ready to confirm specifics.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-digital-sovereignty\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Digital_sovereignty\"><\/span>Digital sovereignty<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europe\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/in-depth-research-reports\/report\/digital-sovereignty-in-practice-the-eus-push-to-shape-the-new-global-economy\/\">digital sovereignty agenda is nothing new<\/a>. In fact, most U.S. tech giants\u00a0are already investing\u00a0in\u00a0local infrastructure\u00a0to ensure compliance with EU data residency regulations. AI darling\u00a0OpenAI also recently unveiled\u00a0a new offering that allows customers to process and store data in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with geopolitical tensions on the rise, \u00c5str\u00f6m argues that control over Europe\u2019s infrastructure matters more than just server locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Donald Trump last month <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/06\/trump-sanction-icc\">signed an executive order<\/a> authorizing economic sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands, accusing it of \u201cillegitimate and baseless actions\u201d against the U.S. and Israel. These sanctions affect how tech companies can serve organizations, with a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/law\/2025\/jan\/20\/international-criminal-court-icc-braces-swift-trump-sanctions-over-israeli-arrest-warrants\">Guardian report<\/a> indicating that the ICC relies heavily on Microsoft\u2019s Azure cloud for storing data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsewhere, Elon Musk \u2014 now a central figure in U.S. governmental operations \u2014 has previously admitted to throttling Ukrainian access to Starlink satellites, operated by his company SpaceX. More recently, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/their-entire-front-line-would-collapse-elon-musks-scathing-warning-for-ukraine-over-starlink-access-13870100.html\">he claimed<\/a> that Ukraine\u2019s entire frontline would collapse if he chose to turn it off. Although <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20250309-live-australia-says-would-consider-sending-troops-to-join-peacekeeping-mission-in-ukraine\">Musk later  backtracked<\/a>, the incident served as yet another reminder of the importance of infrastructure independence. And it\u2019s also why the EU is forging ahead with plans for a own sovereign satellite constellation to rival Starlink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI simply want Europe to control its own destiny,\u201d \u00c5str\u00f6m said. \u201cAnd while we\u2019re at it, try to build something that is better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geopolitical turmoil aside, the AI revolution means that organizations previously reliant on on-premises infrastructure must now consider the cloud to fully leverage AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several European startups are already building cloud infrastructure in Europe, including France\u2019s FlexAI, Finland\u2019s DataCrunch, and Nebius in the Netherlands \u2014 an entity that emerged from the ashes of Yandex last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, while many of these players focus on AI computing, Evroc aims to build an extensive, developer-friendly hyperscale cloud that\u2019s more akin to AWS and its ilk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bulk of Evroc\u2019s 60-plus employees are focused on software development, spread across Sweden, France, and the U.K. \u00c5str\u00f6m noted the London hub wasn\u2019t originally planned but became necessary to attract top talent from major tech firms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m actually very excited about our London office \u2014 that wasn\u2019t part of the initial plan, but in order to get extremely smart people that are working for the hyperscalers, it was the right decision,\u201d \u00c5str\u00f6m said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-show-me-the-money\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Show_me_the_money\"><\/span>Show me the money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Evroc launched out of stealth two years ago with \u20ac13 million in funding, \u00c5str\u00f6m told TechCrunch he planned to raise as much as \u20ac3 billion in capital within a couple of years. By August of last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> broke that Evroc had raised <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swedishtechnews.com\/swedish-startup-evroc-raises-eu42-million-series-a-round-for-its-sustainable-hyperscale-cloud\/\">\u20ac42 million<\/a> as part of its Series A, and now the round has closed at \u20ac50.6 million with investments from U.S.-European venture firm <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blisce.com\/\">Blisce<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/eqtventures.com\/\">EQT Ventures<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.norrsken.vc\/\">Norrsken VC<\/a>, and Giant Ventures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no escaping the elephant in the room, though. Building anything close to what the hyperscalers have built requires a near-bottomless pit of cash \u2014 so does Evroc still plan to raise billions?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s still the case, but the key here is [first] getting that software stack,\u201d \u00c5str\u00f6m continued. \u201cEurope has a lot of data centers, but we don\u2019t really have that cloud. This equity round is really helping us build the software stack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company plans to raise significantly more capital later in 2025, following a funding model similar to other cloud infrastructure players such as CoreWeave, which has grown its footprint by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/coreweave-raises-23-billion-debt-collateralized-by-nvidia-chips-2023-08-03\/\">borrowing against collateral<\/a> such as Nvidia chips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBuilding out data centers will require a lot of additional investment, but the good news is that you can finance that with debt,\u201d \u00c5str\u00f6m said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
