\n Two dozen protesters gathered in front of Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s Manhattan office Saturday to demand he allow visits at nursing homes and take responsibility for loved ones who died there during the height of the city\u2019s COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cCuomo killed my mother!\u201d and \u201cLet families in now,\u201d their posters read.<\/p>\n

Many people in New York nursing homes have been confined to their rooms, often alone, for the past half-year, the protesters said.<\/p>\n

Not seeing their family members has been tormenting on both sides.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother lives at The Riverside [Riverside Premier Rehabilitation and Healing] for six years,\u201d said one of the protesters, Arlene Houston, 49, of Manhattan.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has advanced Alzheimer\u2019s, she is hard of hearing and she has poor eyesight. We do weekly FaceTime calls, but I don\u2019t even know if she hears me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not enough for her. She needs touch. The CNA\u2019s [aides] bathe them, they feed them, but she needs hugs. They\u2019re not allowed to go outdoors. It\u2019s her room or the hallway when they\u2019re cleaning her room. It\u2019s like a prison.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the rally\u2019s organizers, Marcella Goheen, said her husband, Robert, is at the Isabella Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. He has a rare neurological degenerative disorder called leukodystrophy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been six months since we have been allowed to visit our loved ones,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been demanding to have essential care visitations since mid-May and they are only starting to listen to us now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fed him, I bathed him, I have a medical letter from Harvard saying they should let me in, but they can\u2019t because of Gov. Cuomo\u2019s executive order.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s stable, the staff is doing the best they can, but the staff needs to be in partnership with the families.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor six months he hasn\u2019t gotten a family visit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a slow fade. His vitals are stable, but it\u2019s a slow fade-out, it\u2019s depression.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want Gov. Cuomo to sign an executive order tomorrow to allow nursing home visitations. We are losing another round of people to isolation and failure to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n
