\n Culture critic: Gone With \u2018Gone With the Wind\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The Washington Examiner, Philip Klein sees HBO\u2019s decision to yank \u201cGone With the Wind\u201d from its streaming service as \u201cyet another troubling step toward erasing American cultural heritage.\u201d It\u2019s \u201cessential,\u201d he argues, \u201cto preserve the film, not in spite of the fact that it runs counter to our current attitudes, but precisely because it does.\u201d True, by today\u2019s standards, and, \u201cin some cases, even at the time,\u201d the Civil War epic can be jarring \u2014 particularly its portrayal of race and slavery. But erasing the film only \u201cmakes it harder for people to understand how American perceptions of race\u201d have changed. If \u201cother iconic films\u201d were to follow suit, it would be \u201cimpossible to have any enduring American culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Lefty Britain\u2019s Weird Priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cProtesting the racial crimes of American policemen seems an odd thing to do on the streets of London,\u201d quips British scholar Carl Trueman at First Things \u2014 especially \u201cin view of what is happ<\/a>ening\u201d in Hong Kong. Britons, after all, have a special responsibility for the Chinese territory. Given the Beijing regime\u2019s betrayal of its \u201cone country, two systems\u201d promise, \u201cit is fascinating that young British people . . . have chosen the horrific death of George Floyd as the issue on which to take to the streets.\u201d Apparently, \u201cfighting for democracy in the West is simply not as trendy as it was in the days of the Cold War.\u201d And that\u2019s cause for worry: \u201cIf the underlying cultural forces behind protests indicate an impatience with democracy,\u201d then \u201cthe horizon reveals a dark cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: Gray Lady\u2019s \u2018Chilling\u2019 Censorship<\/strong><\/p>\n

Steven A. Holmes loves The New York Times and disagrees with Sen. Tom Cotton\u2019s op-ed in the paper calling for military intervention in the recent riots \u2014 but, he sighs at CNN, the decision to disown the Arkansas lawmaker\u2019s piece is \u201cchilling\u201d nonetheless. The Times\u2019 defense of its publication before backpedaling, for starters, suggests it \u201ccapitulated\u201d to pressure. Times editors furthered that impression by offering \u201cfacile\u201d reasons for their decision, including the claim that \u201cCotton\u2019s essay was unduly harsh\u201d \u2014 even though \u201cgenerating strong feeling is the point of op-ed columns, not their defect.\u201d Holmes says he writes his criticisms \u201cmore in sadness than in anger.\u201d The Times may be \u201cthe best news<\/a>paper\u201d in the world. \u201cBut my love [for it] does not prevent me from calling it out when I think it is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Colin Powell\u2019s Backward Claim<\/strong><\/p>\n

As \u201ca distinguished soldier-statesman,\u201d Colin Powell deserves our \u201ccontinual, unbroken respect,\u201d but not, chides The Washington Post\u2019s Hugh Hewitt, \u201chis own definition of the Constitution.\u201d On Sunday, Powell claimed that President Trump has \u201c\u200a\u2018drifted away from\u2019 the Constitution,\u201d though he \u201calmost certainly\u201d had no grounds for the charge. The retired general<\/a> really should have criticized Democrats, who have \u201cembraced a number of anti-constitutional positions,\u201d and \u201cBeltway elites,\u201d who \u201claunched a blatantly \u00adunconstitutional attack on the 2016 presidential election.\u201d Trump, meanwhile, has \u201cpatiently \u00addefended\u201d governors\u2019 powers to respond to crises, \u201cas the Framers envisioned,\u201d and appointed \u201cConstitution-honoring\u201d judges. Powell\u2019s charge is \u201cincendiary\u201d \u2014 and obviously \u201cerroneous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media<\/a> watch: Hiding the Real Threat to Blacks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chicago saw 18 people killed on May 31 alone, yet none of the deaths \u00adinvolved police, observes Jason Riley in The Wall Street Journal, so don\u2019t expect \u201cmassive protests\u201d over them. Yet such \u201ccarnage\u201d in inner cities is all too typical: \u201cLaw enforcement has next to nothing to do with black homicides.\u201d The problem: \u201cJournalists break down police behavior by race,\u201d but not criminal behavior, distorting the picture. The New York Times reported that Minneapolis cops used force against African-Americans at least seven times as often as against whites during the past five years \u2014 but left out the rate at which whites and blacks there commit violent crimes. Such omissions to \u201cpush a predetermined narrative are not only misleading but harmful, especially to blacks.\u201d<\/p>\n
